if you haven't seen past this episode and if you don't want any inkling of what happens to reena's character over the next eight or so episodes, this review is not for you.
but if the way reena's character develops over those eight episodes leaves a bad taste in your mouth, then do read on.
in this episode, reena's face is plastered all over cape town media as "the new face of terror." reena herself is trying to mug vexcor executives because she's hungry and sick and wasting away in a dirty motel. here we have reena before makeup. reena before the strange and unexplained dream sequences and the underdeveloped emotional responses that plague her storyline. in this episode, reena as a truly dejected character who's coming to grips with the act of terrrorism she's just committed. here we have reena as a character who promises some interesting challenges for the audience. just the idea that terrorism can be carried out by someone we sympathize with -- well, that's an idea that is very challenging for north american audiences.
but the show, in the coming episodes, in my opinion, doesn't make good on these early suggestions, and the reena that develops over the coming episodes is one who's used by the show's creators for sensationalist reasons.
the sexual and physical violence that reena must endure, the strange conditioned responses she starts providing, even the fact that she barely has any contact with charlie, these factors all combine to make me feel that this character wasn't developed properly. charlie and reena should have had more contact earlier in the series in order to keep from the feeling that reena's storyline is half-important to the mystery Charlie's trying to solve.moreless
