  • Funeral Location

    9.5
It was sad to see Prue (Shannon Doherty) leave, but I swear that her funeral was held in the same mausoleum that Inspecter Davidson was killed in at the end of Death Takes A Halliwell (3:16). Am I wrong?

Anyway, I started watching this show because of Shannon but I actually think it got even better with Rose McGowan. Still, this was a fitting, yet heartbreaking, farewell to a beloved character. I think they handled it well.moreless
  • Charmed Again (1)

    10
Charmed Again (1) was a perfect season four premiere episode of Charmed and I really enjoyed watching though I was sad to learn what happened to Prue. It was touching to watch Piper and Phoebe deal with this loss while more demons wanted to attack an innocent girl who was at the funeral. I liked the surprises and meeting the hidden Halliwell sister. It was funny to watch Piper summon Grams. I look forward to watching the next episode!!!!!!!!!moreless
  • How do you respond to the exit of a top cast member? With the best season opener in the series... Paige is found and the series grows darker.

    9.0
Some Charmed fans would never recover from the loss of Prue. I am not one of those. Charmed Again represents easily the best season opener Charmed ever had.

From the very first scene where a disheveled and despondent Piper tries to use magic to reach her lost sister in a candle lit attic, we are immediately introduced to a darker and grittier Charmed. Piper is an understandable mess throughout the episode, and as usual, Holly shines whenever tears are to be shed. She has had a lot of practice, and unfortunately, she will get more. Her attack of Leo for healing her instead of Prue is very true to her character and heartfelt. Her fit of anger over the demonic attack at Prue's funeral is also very fitting for the character; we are quickly reminded- same old Piper. As usual, the end of the Charmed Ones is nearly taken with relief by Piper, who now wants to concentrate on the lives that are left, and as such, the discovery of a new sister is met with a good dose of doubt and then frustration from her. This can actually be interpreted as apathy towards Paige, but it isn't. It is apathy towards being a Charmed One again.

Like in the beginning of the series, Phoebe is again the wiccan heart of the manor, and her and Cole actually take over the demon hunting duties, temporarily. The scene where Cole and Phoebe spy Shax's attack of Paige on the rooftop is a classic. Fantastic writing. And how cool is it to see a witch being able to orb? I love this rinse and revamp of the Phoebe/Cole story. The melodrama at the end of Season 3 needed to be seriously dumped and forgotten, and that is exactly what has been done here with very little explanation how, which is fine with me. The bottom line is that Cole is back in Phoebe's good graces and it is GREAT to have him back. Great scene when he goes toe-to-toe with Shax. Kind of surprising he couldn't vanquish Shax considering the damage he does to the source in Brain Drain.

Paige showing up at the manor and the Charmed Ones being reconstituted is another classic scene. The vanquish of Shax was somewhat quickly handled, but it was still great to see revenge exacted. Rose McGowan as Paige isn't given too much to do this first episode, but she is more than adequate in the role. She is actually more believable as a sister of Piper and Phoebe than the black haired, blue-eyed Prue was. The exposure subplot in this episode is about as ridiculous as any we ever see on this show, and it is highly annoying that the writers would beat that drum again so soon after All Hell Breaks Loose. Fortunately, it is a small part of the show, and I do like Cole threatening the guy and the Timbuktu spell. Personally, I had no problem with the show spending no time trying to explain the gap between last season and this. Everyone can come up with their own explanations, quite easily.moreless
  • Long Lost Sister

    10
Charmed ones's parents should be shamed because Patty gave up Paige and abandoned her all of her years. How she do it, she should be awful mother. However, Patty have no experience raise her daughters, she died. Penny took over and raised three girls. There is no explained that Patty died and Charmed girls have lousy explained for Prue's death. I dont understand Prue's death, how she died. However, I never like Prue very much, I dislike her. Piper suddenly became oldest sister of Charmed ones. Phoebe moved to be middle sister and left is Paige.moreless
  • So sad Prue left...

    9.6
This episode features a few days after Prue's death, Piper and Phoebe hunt for Shax, the demon who is responsible for Prue's death. While in the funeral, Phoebe saw Paige, and she got a premoniton that Paige will be attacked by Shax. Later on, Phoebe and Cole learn that she can orb, which means that she is possibly a whitelighter. But Leo get nothing from the Elders. Luckily for the sisters, they have Cole, a good demon, and learn that Paige is the new charmed ones.

Paige Matthews take over Prue and become the new charmed ones. She orbs things. I like Prue more than Paige.

This episode is NOT really good, although it has a novel. The writer(s) should have done better than this.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (22)

    • At 3:24, when Paige is reading Prue's obituary, you can see at the very bottom of the newspaper that her name is misspelled as "Pru".

    • In the scene where Paige and Shane are in P3 talking, we see her drawing a circle on the napkin. When the waitress brings their drinks, she makes 2 more small marks with the pen. In the rest of the scene, she is talking to Shane explaining how she feels connected to the sisters, clearly not drawing on the napkin anymore. At the end of the scene when Paige and Shane get up to leave, the camera zooms in on the napkin and shows that she has drawn the Triquetra (the power of three symbol).

    • TRIVIA: It's stated in this episode that Paige does not drink due to it having been problematic in the past. This is one of a few facts that will remain consistent throughout the show and will be mentioned again several times from this episode up until almost the final episode.

    • If Shax is suppose to be the Source's personal assassin, then why didn't the Source send him after Cole when he killed the Triad? Why would the Source send some random bounty hunter after Belthezor, a demon who was supposedly one of the most powerful in the underworld? Yet send Shax, a demon who was of equal strength (if not stronger) after a mortal doctor (in the episode All Hell Breaks Loose) and Paige, a witch who had not yet gained her powers? Wouldn't it have made more sense the other way?

    • When Piper summons Grams to ask her why the Source thinks the Charmed Ones can be reconstituted, and Patty comes in to tell them she was the one who swore Grams to secrecy, Patty and Grams give off shadows. Not only on each other but on themselves when they put their arms up and their sleeves put shadows on themselves. Since they are ghosts and see-through how can they give off shadows?

    • TRIVIA: The "lost witch" spell, cast by Piper in the opening scene, was also used in the season 2 episode How to Make a Quilt Out of Americans. That time, however, it was used to strip the Charmed Ones of their powers rather than to find a lost witch.

    • TRIVIA: The song played after the opening credits is I Miss You by Stevie Nicks.

    • After the funeral Phoebe, Leo & Cole talking to Paige near the stairs and Piper appears. Piper goes upstairs and Phoebe says "She needs to be alone". Suddenly after that they are in the hall but they had not actually moved. They have changed one room for another without moving themselves. Phoebe is next to the sofa, and then suddenly she is next to the lamp and the wall in the hall instead.

    • TRIVIA: This episode marks the reunion of The Power of Three. Piper and Phoebe are once again Charmed, and Paige has became a Charmed One for the very first time.

    • TRIVIA: This is the first episode of the series that doesn't feature the normal opening credits.

    • When Piper and Phoebe are sitting in front of the fire, talking. Piper's head keeps changing directions. When the cameras is facing Piper she is looking towards Phoebe. But when the camera is facing Phoebe her head is turned to the right, and her hair is all hanging over her left shoulder.

    • TRIVIA: In this episode, it is stated that Paige is the sisters' younger half-sister, but in reality, Rose McGowan (Paige), is younger than Alyssa Milano, but older then Holly Marie Combs. Making Holly the youngest of the three women, despite her role as eldest.

    • Patty and Grams told Piper and Phoebe that they needed to wait if they wanted to summon Prue. However, they never tried to summon her again, at least on-screen.

    • TRIVIA: As of this episode, Piper turns out to be the strongest witch of the lineage, considering that she has become the oldest sister, after Prue's death.

    • TRIVIA: This is one of nine episodes with the series title, "Charmed", in it.

    • TRIVIA: This episode marks the first appearance of Rose McGowan as Paige Matthews.

    • TRIVIA: With this episode Holly Marie (Piper) is the only actor left from the original cast. Lori Rom (the original Phoebe) has been replaced with Alyssa Milano and Shannon (Prue) has been relaced with Rose (Paige).

    • Paige mentions that their mother died a long time ago, so she couldn't be her daughter, but even assuming Paige doesn't know her "real" birth day, she must know the day she was abandoned and see that day was before Patty died, so it would still be possible.

    • In the season 3 episode "All Hell Breaks Loose", the Source is shown for the first time with large dark red wings - however, when shown again in this episode, he no longer has those wings.

    • Shane was surprised that Paige doesn't drink alcohol, but after a month of dating, wouldn't he have noticed?

    • TRIVIA: Prue's birthdate is revealed to be October 28, 1970.

    • When Piper and Phoebe call Grams after finding that there maybe a sister they don't light the candles before they call her.

  • QUOTES (25)

    • Piper: (regarding Prue) How is she? Is she okay?
Grams: I'm not allowed to tell you.
      Piper: What? Why?
Grams: For the same reason you're not allowed to see her. At least not for a while anyway. Seeing Prue now, speaking to her. Keeps her alive for you. It keeps you from moving on with your life.

    • Piper: We've cheated death before, I don't see how this time could be any different!

    • Leo: Are you sure she orbed? Are you sure that it wasn't something else?
Phoebe: Leo, she disappeared. Bright white, shiny thingies came, and then she reappeared. What else could it be?
Leo: It just doesn't make any sense.
      Cole: Why not?
Leo: Because why would Shax want to kill a Whitelighter?
Cole: Maybe he doesn't know she's a Whitelighter.
Leo: Right, the Source sends out his personal assassin, but doesn't know who he's after?
Phoebe: Is it possible that she didn't know that she was a Whitelighter?
      Leo: No. Why?
Cole: Because she acted as if she didn't. She acted just as surprised as we were when she orbed out.
Leo: Well, that doesn't make any sense either.
Phoebe: Okay, why don't you go up and ask the Elders what does make sense, so we don't go risking our lives again?

    • Phoebe (after blowing up Shax): It's not enough, Shax was just the messenger. We need to get The Source.
      Paige: The Source of what?
      (Phoebe groans)
      Piper: Of all evil.
Paige: What have you guys turned me into? (Paige walks out of the attic)

    • Piper: In this night and in this hour, I call upon the ancient power. Bring back my sister. Bring back the Power of Three!

    • (After Darryl hits Cortez over the head with his gun)
Darryl: I think you've been through enough today, huh?
      Piper: Thank you, Darryl.
Phoebe: Darryl, go, get outta here. We don't want you to take the fall for this.
      Darryl: No, it's okay.
Phoebe: No, it's not. This is our problem, he wants to expose us, not you. Let us take care of this. Please?
Darryl: If you need me, you know where to find me, huh?

    • Piper: Wait. Are you accusing us?
Cortez: I've just begun to accuse you, lady!
Grams: All right, fine. You caught us. Congratulations. So what are you gonna do about it? Shoot us?
Phoebe: Easy, Grams. Not all of us are dead, remember?

    • Piper (referring to Prue): She's been there my whole life. I've always had a big sister. And I don't know how to live without one...

    • Cole: I got a better idea. How about you and me go someplace? You know? Drop off the face of the earth together, disappear?
      Phoebe: Hmm. Don't tempt me.

    • Grams: Hello, my darling. How are you?
Piper: How am I? Are you kidding? Do you guys not get the news up there?

    • Phoebe: What's going on?
Piper: I'm going to ask Grams what's going on, actually.
      Phoebe: Grams?
Piper: Mm-hmm. Your destiny still awaits, she says. There's a reason for everything, she says. So, it's time to summon her transparent butt back here and find out exactly what that reason is.
      Phoebe: Okay, but what should...
Piper: Here these words. Hear my cry spirit from the other side. Come to me, I summon thee. Cross now the Great Divide!
(She lets out a semi-satisfied sigh and Grams appears in a bright light)
Grams: Piper? Why are you calling? P-Phoebe, wha-what's going on?
Piper: Grams, why does the Source think that the Charmed Ones can be reconstituted?
      Grams: I do - I don't know what you're talking about.
Piper: You know what, Grams? You were a lousy liar when you were alive, and now as a ghost, you're worse.

    • Piper: No. You were trying to get yourself killed, which is what this family does best is get killed. (She throws the towel onto a counter in frustration and anger) Isn't it obvious by now that our only destiny is to die? And you are making it way too easy for them, Phoebe. You are just walking right into it!

    • Phoebe: Hey, you okay?
Piper: Yeah. Sure, why not? We could have another funeral tomorrow. I mean, all the dishes are out and we pretty much know who to invite.

    • Piper: Okay, well this is way too much for me to handle. Way too much.
Patty: Nobody can blame you for being angry, sweetie.
Piper: Angry? Yeah, I'm angry. Um, I'm confused and you know what? This...this is just crazy. You cannot float in here after all these years and go, "Oh gosh, I forgot, by the way, you've got a sister." Especially not today of all days.

    • Phoebe: Oh. Uh. We call the spirits to help undo and send him off to...Timbuktu. (Cortez vanishes from the floor) Whoa. It worked.

    • Phoebe: Yep. Come on in. Welcome. I'm Phoebe. And this is...
(Phoebe hooks her arm into Paige's and walks over to Piper and Leo)
Paige: Piper. I know. I've been to your club. Pretty great.
Piper: Thank you. And you are?
Paige: Paige. My name is Paige.
Phoebe: Hmm. Another P. Imagine that.

    • Phoebe: Why did you come to Prue's funeral?
Paige: Part of me feels like I lost her too. I felt drawn to her.

    • Piper (about Prue): I don't want to do this anymore, okay? It's over! You can tell them we buried their precious Charmed Ones when we buried our sister.

    • Patty: It happened when Sam and I were together.
      Cole: Sam?
      Leo: Their Mom's whitelighter.
Cole: The apple doesn't fall far from the forbidden tree, I see.
      Piper: Pscht!

    • Piper (to Leo about Prue): You saved me because I'm your damn wife, but you should have saved her, because she was the best she was she...(Piper cries)

    • Phoebe: Alright, hold it! Wait just one minute. Are you telling me that that girl, our innocent, is really … our sister?
      Patty: Your baby sister.
      Grams: Their baby half-sister …
Patty: But by my half, which makes her a sister witch. Well, actually, not yet anyway. Not until all three of you are here together by the book, just like before.
      Grams: Charmed. Again.
Cole: And I thought my family was screwed up.

    • Piper: Stop it! Stop it! Stop it! Damn it! This is Prue's funeral for God's sakes! Can't we at least bury her in peace, is that too much to ask?!

    • Piper: Timbuktu? You sent him off to Timbuktu?!
Phoebe: It was the only thing I could think of that rhymed with 'undo'.

    • Piper: Just tell me one thing. Are you insane or are you just plain stupid. We buried Prue this morning and you go off tonight and almost joined her. What the hell is the matter with you!?

    • Cole: Honey, what are you doing?
      Phoebe: Uh, cleaning.
Cole: But you don't clean. You hate cleaning.
Phoebe: I know. But it's better than falling apart, right?

  • NOTES (5)

    • International Episode Titles:
Czech Republic: Znovu čerodějky (Sorceresses Again)
France: Les liens du sang (Blood links)

    • This episode scored 6.0 million viewers.

    • Actor Bennett Guillory appears for the first time as The Source. He is the second actor to appear as the original Source (in demonic form). Not only did he appear in the most episodes (three, actor Michael Bailey Smith appeared in one and Peter Woodward in two) but the only actor to not return in another role(Smith played Belthezor, Shax and a Grimlock and Woodward played Aku in the seventh season).

    • Yancey Arias (Det. Cortez) has previously appeared in an uncredited cameo in the season 1 episode The Wendigo, as a bidder during an auction at Bucklands.

    • In this episode, a weird camera effect is shown that doesn't happen in any other episodes. In some scenes (like the scene in the hall after the funeral, the scene where Darryl is shown for the first time in the episode, the scene in the kitchen, etc.) the image is kinda turned to one side. The camera is not right, and it's filmed spun to the side. The whole effect is there to transmit that things are not right as they should but they are "turned" as if things were going to fall anytime.
