  • Little Box of Horrors

Little Box of Horrors was a great episode of Charmed. I really enjoyed watching because the story was good and I liked the Charmed take on the Pandora's Box mythology. I do feel the story could have been a little better in some ways but over all the episode was a success. It was interesting to see Piper dealing with Wyatt using magic, Paige coming into her destiny, and for Hope the new Guardian of the Box to discover her new role. The shape shifter demon was an interesting character. Every thing worked out in the end. I certainly look forward to watching what will happen next!!!!!moreless

Little Box of Horrors-The sisters scramble to recover Pandora's Box when it falls into the hands of a shapeshifting demon who intends to open it and fill the world with all of its sorrows. Probablyone of the most underrated episode throughout Charmed's 8 year run, "Little Box of Horrors" is an episode that's is pretty basic in terms of plot: The sisters are introduced to an innocent they have to protect from a powerful demon. Yet, thanks to Cameron Litvack, this episode is written rather tremendously with someunforeseentwists and some strong writing. I have to say, I loved the idea of the Guardians (Not to be confused with the Guardians from earlier this season). While it's a bit too reminiscent of Buffy (one girl chosen from each generation), it was written well enough that it doesn't bother me too much! Pandora's Box is yet another piece of mythology given the Charmed treatment and for once, it's done well. All the guest stars were in top form, Katya just had the right amount ofmenaceand charm, I really loved the fake-out of her being Nina, thepreviousGuardian. I loved how the opening fight between Katya and Nina ended soambiguously, which set up Katya's reveal so well. Speaking of Katya, she just had the right amount of menace and charm to her thanks to Michelle Hard. Unlike most demons on Charmed during this years, Katya really knew how set-up the sisters and well as the innocent she was after. Her manipulation of Hope when trying to get her to open the box was great, playing on her fears of the new world she has been introduced to and just wanting to go back to being normal. Brooke Nevin was also convincing as Hope, who is the next chosen in the line of Guardians. I loved how Hope's situation is contrasted with the first time the sisters' became witches. It's nice to be reminded of how the girls started out and them using that to help an innocent. Also, not to be forgotten in a minor but well acted role is Shani Pride as Darcy, Hope's best friend. I really loved the moment where she tells Hope about the final part of the legend of the box. Sure, it's unrealistic that Darcy suddenly is comfortable enough to contribute to what's happening given she was just kidnapped by demons, but the delivery was good on the actress' part.

Another thing I love about the episode is that it shows the sisters' acting smart for once, secretly coming up with their own plan when Katya tries to take Hope once again when she takes the form of Darcy. It'sespeciallysurprising when it's Phoebe who's the one who sees through Katya's guise and gets Paige to glamour into Hope to vanquish Katya. It was another awesome twist and Rose McGowan really kicked a$$ as Paige for once! Rose really was great not only with the Pandora's Box story but Paige's sub-plot with finding a future whitelighter. While the trapped elevator setting was cliche, it was a nice way to get some strong development for Paige since these days the character seems so dense! Paige really got to shine and I loved the moment where she gets everyone on the elevator to help when all hell breaks loose. Rose McGowan, like I said, can really give a great performance when the script calls for it and she puts in some genuine effort. The whole Paige becoming an whitelighter plot has been explored in the past, like in 'Sam I Am" from Season 5 but it's nice to see it being official here. Paige really hasn't had a decentstory-linesince she was a social worker and her becoming a whitelighter does in fact give the character a chance to evolve into her own and share her wisdom as a Charmed One to other witches and future whitelighters. All and All, "Little Box of Horrors" may seem like the standard Charmed plot at first but it's great episode with a solidamountof twists, character development and guest stars.moreless

It's a bad, bad, bad, bad box

An imaginative storyline with some neat twists. This is a definite throwback to the early seasons, with the Charmed Ones called upon to protect an innocent in trouble.

After last week's dreadful performance, the post production team is back to its best with some nifty effects, especially in the opening scene. There's also some decent acting, with a very good actress playing Nina. Shame she gets killed off so soon. The demon makes a refreshing change from the usual 'extras in black' - liked the outfit and the actress. I found the innocent rather annoying. She reminded me of Kyle from "That Old Black Magic" which is something I'd rather forget.

Paige has her own plot this week, in which she starts hearing jingles from the elders. In order to stop the headache, which is nicely acted by Rose, she must save a future whitelighter. This sounds promising but frustratingly turns into a very boring scene where she gets trapped in a lift with a bloke who thinks he's superman, a quarrelling couple and a whiny little girl. Bit of a wasted opportunity.

After a bright start, the main plot also fades a little towards the end. It would have been nice to see the impact of all those sorrows on the world but instead they get put back in the box with no effort and no consequences. There's a good twist at the vanquish when Paige disguises herself as Hope but, other than that, it's a pretty routine ending.

Another miniplot sees Wyatt orbing himself and his toys all over the house, much to his parents' annoyance. This is actually quite funny. I just wish Wyatt would say something. How can any child be that quiet?

And I got all the way through without once using the word 'Pandora'. Well, almost.

    Score: 9.1moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (18)

    • In the episode, Katya says that Pandora gives the box to Prometheus who opens it but this isn't true because the myth says that Prometheus was already chained to the rocks and Pandora was sent by Zeus to give the Box to Epimetheus, Prometheus's brother.

    • TRIVIA: This is the second time Paige orbs someone away without she herself orbing with them.

    • TRIVIA: Wyatt is now going through a magical "Terrible Twos" where he begins orbing himself & his toys all around the manor.

    • TRIVIA: This is the fourth time Paige morphs into someone - this time it's Hope, the new guardian of Pandora's Box.

    • Why does there even need to be a guardian for Pandora's Box if the only one who can open the box is the guardian? The demons that could ever steal the box wouldn't be able to do anything with it anyways.

    • In the episode "Sin Francisco", Leo said that the sin box was probably how the Pandora's Box myth got started, but in this episode he seems to know and have always known that Pandora's Box is, in fact, real.

    • At the end, Leo is holding Chris who has nothing in his hands. In the next shot, Chris is holding a toy block. In the far shot, Chris isn't holding it anymore.

    • In Hope's dorm, we see Hope carrying her jacket on her right arm. After Phoebe orbs in, Piper peers around an overturned desk near the window. Hope pops up next to Piper from behind the overturned couch. Now she's wearing the jacket.

    • In the attic, Nina (Katya) has a long cut going down her left cheek on her face. In the next shot, it's gone. When Piper is scrying, there's a big dirt spot. When Nina (Katya) and Piper are in Hope's dorm, there's a little dirt spot.

    • When Wyatt orbs down at bath time Paige seems to notice him and be surprised twice.

    • When explaining to the guy in the elevator how to perform CPR, Paige says "I need you to put your hands together on the xyphoid process". One should never place their hands on the process during CPR, because that might cause it to break off and seriously damage the liver, spleen or other vital organs.

    • Why would Phoebe think that Darcy is Katya? After all, Phoebe obviously knew Paige went with a potion to vanquish her. Also why would she think Paige would send Katya to them, she would think that as Darcy arrived in orbs.

    • Piper and Phoebe find a copy of The Complete Encyclopedia Of Demons at Magic School, and it proves incredibly useful. So why haven't they got a copy or used it for any of the last seven years?

    • Piper and Phoebe both leave the manor with Hope and they don't even think about the fact that Wyatt & baby Chris are alone in the house. We already knew Leo and Paige were at Magic School - who was watching the children? Speculation is perhaps a magical nanny or Leo came home already, but we see nor hear proof of this.

    • In Greek mythology, Pandora's Box was not given to Prometheus, as Piper asserts and everyone accepts. The Box was actually given to Epimetheus, Prometheus' brother.

    • The computers and monitors in Hope's dorm room are not connected to anything. The one behind her as she is on the phone is not even a computer, just an untouched unused ATX case with all the original EM-shielding in place instead of any cards or connectors.

    • Towards the end we see a close-up of Kayta's foot in the underworld, walking on a stone floor, and the "stone" sinks in, obviously giving away that not real stone was used.

    • In the first ten minutes, Paige is sitting on the couch with on hand on her head. Phoebe gives her a coffee mug and she starts to drink it, still with one hand on her head, but then the shot changes and both hands are on the cup.

  • QUOTES (12)

    • Elder Sandra: You're a natural, Paige. Everything you've been and done in your life has been preparing you to be a Whitelighter. Everything you needed to help those people has been inside you all along.

    • Hope (looking at Phoebe and Piper, and what's left of her dorm room): You blew up my dorm...with your hands!
Piper: Yes, and I am very sorry about that.
Hope: And now you're both calm — like this stuff happens every day!
      Piper: Well, it kinda does.

    • Hope: Oh, I am not going anywhere with you people. You burst in here talking about Pandora's box and guardians and witches and God knows what else. And now you expect me to leave with you?

    • Leo: I think you better orb upstairs before Mommy turns you into a toad.

    • Phoebe: Magical boys will be magical boys.
Leo: Yeah, well, try telling that to his magical mama.

    • Leo: Actually, it was all right. It calmed down a bit once Wyatt tried to orb a toy to himself and hit himself in the head.
      Piper: Oh, no.

    • Phoebe: You know, maybe it's psychosomatic.
      Paige: Phoebe, come here
      Phoebe: What?
(Phoebe edges her face towards Paige, who slaps it)
Phoebe: Owwwww! What was that for?
Paige: Does that seem psychomatic to you?

    • Paige: So who was the future whitelighter I was supposed to help?
      Elder: You.

    • Nina: You'll never get it, I won't let you.
Katya: I didn't ask your permission.
(after the big fight scene and Katya telling her that sooner or later she'll get the box)
      Nina: Over my dead body.
Katya: That's the thing about you Guardians. You're always dying for that damn box.

    • Hope (to Leo): Are you a witch too?
      Piper: No, he's a...he's a long story...
Leo: One that turned out well.

    • Darcy: Will somebody please tell me what the hell is going on here?
      Hope: That's her.

    • Paige (rubbing her temples): Do you mind?
      Phoebe: What?
Paige: Being so psychotically perky, while I am so miserable.

    • This episode aired April 23, 2005 in Canada.

    • Nina: We're chosen in which every generation a girl is born...

An obvious nod to and parody of the famous line from the TV series Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, where she is the chosen one - into every generation a slayer is born...

    • Piper: Well, we'll see how Mr. Mom deals with it...

This is a reference to the 1983 film Mr. Mom starring Michael Keaton and Teri Garr. In the film, Jack (Keaton) stays home and takes care of the kids, while his wife Caroline (Garr) goes to work.

    • Title: Little Box of Horrors
Reference to the musical, later developed into a movie "Little Shop of Horrors".

    • re: Pandora's Box

In Greek mythology, Pandora was the first woman, created by Zeus as part of his punishment upon mankind for Prometheus giving them the gift of fire. Pandora was made as a poisoned gift for mankind by the Gods and given a box filled with all the woes of the world, then placed before Epimetheus', Prometheus' brother. Epimetheus ignored his brother's warning and took Pandora as his wife, and later she opened the box, unleashing the woes upon then-perfect mankind.
