  • Demon's First Baby

    6.0
Charmed manages to wrangle up a very watchable episode, one that even has a moral quandary for the sisters to battle over at its core. Its Manti-core. (I'm too good sometimes.) While the sisters don't neccessarily take the issue of killing a new-born, demonic child as seriously as you'd expect, what with the majority of it playing out as though they're arguing over who has to get up off of the couch to change the channel, it's still a mildly entertaining piece of fluff, and actually establishes Paige's growing need for independence much more effectively here than any episode so far this season. It's a tried and tested maneuver to pit Paige against her sisters, and it still manages to effectively generate the slice of drama we do get here.

Props should also be given for having actual demons show up and kick a little arse. There's always a tiny, geeky part of me that enjoys whenever a badass demon shimmers in and hands the sisters their bruised behinds on a plate. The Manticores were pretty nifty lookin', I just wish more was made of them. But not to fret, because we're also treated to a demonic Beauty & The Beast metaphor, and a little hunchback to boot. The switcharoo mishap was actually really well done, with Paige and Phoebe thinking that they were rescuing Piper from her captive, when in fact they were delivering the baby right into the hands of the bad guys.

At the end of the day, Jason is still on this show, so this was never going to be a perfect episode. And what day is it this week? Cos Leo and Chris are best pals again. Whitelighters, eh?moreless

Little Monsters was a perfect and very entertaining episode of Charmed and I really enjoyed watching because there was a lot of character and plot development. magic, and intrigue. It was awesome to see the sisters be torn over helping a demon baby, and I liked the way it all played out. There was a lot of action, drama and intrigue over the child. It was awesome for Piper to connect with the father and to learn that he only wanted the best for his baby. I liked how it all played out and i certainly look forward to watching the next episode!!!!!!!!!moreless
  • Demon Baby One More Time!

    8.0
Little Monsters-After vanquishing a Manticore demon, Piper, Phoebe and Paige become foster parents to its orphaned half-breed infant but upon Chris' plea to vanquish the child, they believe that by raising the child with love they can change its destiny. Meanwhile, Phoebe surprises her boyfriend Jason when she responds to feelings he hasn't expressed yet, and Paige gives Darryl a superpower.

Wow. Where did this come from!? Seems like there's some life in a so far lifelless Season 6 as "Little Monsters" delivers a surprisingly dark and complex episode. Sure, we've had episodes with abandoned babies and demon babies before, but the writers to manage some great questions: Should the sisters really vanquish the Manicore baby just becuase it was born a demon or should they save it giving it a chance to grow up and become good? The whole "nature vs. nurture" argument is nothing new but it's used rather well on Charmed with the sisters arguing over what the baby's fate should be. I also liked that they tied the baby with Wyatt making the baby's true nature more of mystery, since Wyatt doesn't defend himself against the baby, doesn't that mean the baby's good or could this possibly be the demon that Chris has gone back in time to protect Wyatt from? The there was Phoebe's empathy which she didn't sense anything from the baby. This is the kind of moral ambiguity that's missing from Charmed of late and made Season 3 and 4 the thought-provoking seasons they were. It's good to see the writers bringing up a threat that really blurs the line between good and evil.

I have to say, it's about time we got some demonic looking creatures again on Charmed. It's seems all the budget hasn't been wasted on bad CGI after all. The Manicores looked creepy and the fact they ate and harvested demons made them even more menancing. The Beast was pretty awesome looking and the fact he turned out to be not only an innocent but the father of the baby was a nice twist. The scenes between the Beast and Piper were touching and broought some depth to the story. It's been a while since we've had some well developed innocent with sympathic backstories. Sure we had Larry in "Soul Survivor" but compared to the early years, innocents just come and go now, instead we just have the sisters being put under silly spells or defeating stupid villains not worth talking about. You actually feel sorry for the Beast (who we later learn is a human and name is Derek) Derek really seemed like a genuine man and possible ally for the sisters (maybe even a love interest for Piper for the rest of the season?) But he never returns and it's a shame considering he's such a well developed character. There are two sub-plots in the episode and their actually not that bad. Paiges gives Darryl invinciblity to stop a criminal, which is pretty hilarious. It's kinda cool seeing Darryl with powers, not to mention enjoying it. The sight of his destoryed office trying to control his strength was priceless! Then there's Phoebe telling Jason "I love you too" and despite Phoebe having an Urkel moment at the start of the episode, both Alyssa Milano and Eric Dane finally show some sweet chemisty in their scenes for once and that last moment where he tells Phoebe "I love you too" was a nice line ender. All and All, 'Little Monsters" is a solid episode with a strong, layered (for Charmed anyway!) plot with dark moments andgreat character development.moreless
  • Interesting Episode!

    10
I can't believe Charmed ones killed the baby's mother. But, why mother attack them for ??? Mother shouldnt do it! Charmed one had no choice to kill her to protect themself! Derek/Beast tried to find his son and finally got him back in the ending of this episode. Derek became human once again!! Derek looks so cute and hot. I love his hair, curly!! I kind HALF agree with Chris because baby is dangerous "evil". The baby might have genetic of evil. We never know. I love when Chris wants to protect Wyatt from Demon come close to Wyatt to turn him to evil! Great Episode!moreless
  • Nature or nurture?

    9.1
A much better offering than of late, "Little Monsters" centres on a demonic but very human looking baby which the Charmed Ones take into their care. If this sounds like a remake of the Season Two episode, "Reckless Abandon", don't worry. It isn't. It's a lot better.

Two sets of baddies seem to be after the baby: a pack of cannibalistic demons and a mysterious hunchback 'beast'. When Piper is kidnapped by the beast she and her sisters end up making some very different choices. It's a clever storyline which keeps you guessing all the way. The only weak point is the explanation of how Derek became the beast. He claims he made a few potions and these changed him but how could he make potions if he wasn't magical to begin with? Hmmm.

For once, the demons actually look like demons. I can't tell you how refreshing it is to see this. They even have demonic feet. Top marks to wardrobe and make-up! The vanquishes are also good, particularly when the beast rips out the heart of one of the manticores.

Chris and Leo seem to be joined at the hip this week, orbing together and agreeing on every point. While this is all very cute, I much preferred it when they were fighting. Wyatt and his new friend were good value. Loved that thing with the dummy. For the first time on the series, Darryl has a wholly separate subplot, in which Paige makes him invincible. It's fun to watch but a wee bit pointless.

Very occasionally, Charmed raises some genuine moral issues and this turns out to be one of the best. When the baby shows up, Chris's first thought is to vanquish it but Paige reasons that it isn't yet evil. I'd like to think Paige is trying to make amends for the way she judged Cole so harshly but I'm probably giving the writers too much credit. Still, it's a good talking point, particularly with what's around the corner....moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (21)

    • In the beginning of the episode, Piper pulls the blanket off and reveals the baby demon. While she is the only one to wear clothes with sleeves, the shot where her hand removes the blanket shows an arm with neither sleeves, nor Holly Marie Combs' easily recognizable tattoos.

    • Where does Darryl's superstrength come from? Paige's invincibility spell explains why he is immune to bullets but it doesn't explain how he can suddenly rip doors off cars.

    • TRIVIA: When Leo says "I am a father first", Chris is shown smiling. This is a foreshadowing reference to the future of season six when Chris is revealed to be Piper and Leo's son.

    • TRIVIA: This is the first time that the top of the Golden Gate Bridge appears in the show.

    • TRIVIA: In this episode, Jason speaks italian.

    • TRIVIA: Paige uses the phrase "raison d'être," which means "reason for being." This becomes a theme for Paige, and she uses the phrase again later in the season.

    • At the solarium scene Wyatt is shown orbing next to the little child/demon, and the child changes his position. At the beginning of the scene his head is on the right side next to Piper and seconds later when Wyatt orbs in, his head is on the left side.

    • After Phoebe bumps into the waiter at the beginning, the camera cuts to Jason. And without enough time to leave, much less clean up and leave, him, his tray, and everything that was on it is gone.

    • When Darryl is shot we are given a show of the hostage place with Darryl standing in front. We can see the bullets and there are SWAT members standing at a much clearer view, who had their snipers pointing towards the gun man/Darryl, so isn't it possible for them to have also seen him being shot AND the flat slugs dropping to the floor?

    • Piper tells the beast that she made the vanquishing potion, when it was actually Paige and Phoebe who made it after Piper was kidnapped by the beast.

    • TRIVIA: This is Dorian Gregory's 50th episode on the show.

    • TRIVIA: Wyatt uses his protective forcefield again.

    • In the last episode, Leo told Piper that the elders took Chris off their "account", but now he's back without an explaination. Did they reconsider? Is he rebelling? Is he neglecting other charges?

    • For some reason there's the number 42995 on the front of the bank. If it's a zip code it means they're in Kentucky - it doesn't seem like it's a street address since that'd put them 420 blocks from downtown San Francisco which doesn't appear to be the case.

    • If someone is thrown that hard through a car, then hits the closed door on the other side, and sends it flying off it's hinges, that person is not going to be in any condition to make conversation, assuming they're even still alive.

    • The glass door to the building where the hostages were was obviously closed, but the kid shoots at Darryl, who is outside, and nothing happens to the glass.

    • Couldn't Leo just orb up to the elders to convene? Also, since his investigation of Chris is over, why is he still hanging around - shouldn't he be up with the other elders now?

    • Not only could Paige have called for the potion, she could have also called for the baby.

    • After the Manticore demon came, when Phoebe and Paige bottled the potion, Paige was thrown across the room. She then tells Phoebe to get the bottle - couldn't she have just called for it?

    • Why did Phoebe and Paige need the Manticore demon's help if they knew where Piper was? Paige orbs to the house with Phoebe before the other Manticore demons got there. Couldn't they just have gone there by themselves?

    • Wouldn't the officers around find it a little odd that Darryl wasn't injured by the bullets?

  • QUOTES (18)

    • (Darryl, under a spell, takes a teenage boy into custody.)
Teenager: How'd you do it, man? How did those bullets bounce right off your chest like that?
Darryl: Because I'm a bad ass, that's what. (Opening the door to the police car, Darryl pulls it off its hinges.)
Teenager: What the hell was that?
Darryl: Shut up. (Darryl shoves the kid into the back seat, propelling him across the seat and out the other door.)
Teenager: What the hell are you, man?

    • Chris: There's a demon in the playpen!

    • Phoebe (gazing at the baby demon): Look at how cute he is, so adorable. Oh, except when he does that weird little thing with his tongue.

    • Phoebe: You tell a guy that you love them and they bolt, you know, it's just what they do!

    • (After Phoebe interrupts a meeting)
Jason (to the Italian guests): Vogliate scusarmi. Torno subito.
Phoebe: I didn't know you spoke Italian.
      Jason: Outside!
Phoebe: How come I didn't know you speak Italian?

    • Paige walks in with a guilty face.
      Piper: What...what did you do?
Paige: I kinda forgot to reverse the spell I put on Darryl.

    • Piper (about the demon baby): Chris, I'm a mother. I can't go around vanquishing babies, no matter how
      evil they are.
Chris: It's not how evil he is, it's how evil he's going to be. You've got to stop looking at him like he's a little baby and start looking at him like he's an unstoppable killing machine, because that's what he is.

    • Piper (making fun of Phoebe): Love you too.
      Phoebe: Don't.
      Piper: Sorry.

    • Chris (about Paige): What you're just gonna let her go?
Piper: You are welcome to try and stop her.

    • (Paige goes to answer the phone.)
Phoebe: Hey, if it's Jason, tell him I'm in the shower.
      Piper: Are you avoiding him?
Phoebe: Uh, kind of. I sort of told him that I loved him last night.
Piper: Oh, and this is bad?
Phoebe: No, except I said 'I love you too' as if he said 'I love you' first, which he didn't.
Piper: So you told him he loved you before he told you he loved you?
      Phoebe: Mmm hmm.
      Piper: Yeah, that's not good.

    • Paige: I think he likes you.
Chris: I don't care. Vanquish it.
      Phoebe: Chris.
      Chris: I mean it. Now.
Paige: No, we are not vanquishing a baby. What's wrong with you?
Chris: I'm just concerned that this could be the future evil that gets to Wyatt.
      Paige: Don't be ridiculous.
Chris: What? I'm being ridiculous? There is a demon in the playpen.

    • Piper(covers her eyes trying to get Wyatt to play peek-a-boo): Where's Wyatt? There he is. Where's Wyatt? There he is.
Wyatt pays no attention, and remains looking at the other half demon child.
Piper: It's no use. (to the other child) Bad demon, very bad demon.

    • Phoebe: You stay away from my nephew, and don't you shimmer after him either or I'll bind your powers!
Human/manticore baby cries, then makes loud screeching noises.
Piper: Phoebe! Hurry! Put him down!
      Phoebe: Ok, why?
      The beast appears.
      Piper: That's why.
The beast hits Phoebe into Piper throwing both of them into a table.

    • Chris: Just out of curiosity, what's the elders' policy on vanquishing demon babies?
      Leo: Why?
Chris: Because there's one playing with Wyatt in his playpen as we speak.

    • (At the top of the Golden Gate Bridge)
Chris: What are you doing up here?
      Leo: Communing with the others.
      Chris: Can anyone see us?
Leo: Not me, but you look like a lunatic standing up here talking to yourself.

    • Piper (to Derek/The Beast): Aren't you glad you didn't kill me now?
Leo: Not funny. I don't think that's funny.
      Chris: Agreed.
Phoebe: Oh What--are you two on like the same team now?

    • Phoebe: This is all Jason's fault.
      Leo: How is that?
Phoebe: Uh--you're a guy. You wouldn't get it.

    • Phoebe: While we're on that subject. How do you feel about me?
      Jason: I love you too.

  • NOTES (4)

  • ALLUSIONS (3)

    • The scene where Piper is healing to the Beast is a clear allusion to The Beauty and the Beast. In that story there is a scene where Belle (the beauty) is healing the Beast just like this episode.

    • Title: Little Monsters

This is a reference to the old TV series Little Rascals, which was also made into a film. Plus there's a film called "Little Monsters" starring Howie Mandel and Fred Savage, about monsters under the bed.

    • Re: Manticore demons

The manticores in this episode are partially based on legendary creatures of the same name. However, their appearance and mating habits are dramatically different according to most legends.
