Who was the Episode MVP ?

  • Something Wicca This Way Goes

Something Wicca This Way Goes was a superb season 7 finale of Charmed and it also felt as if it could have been a series finale. I really enjoyed watching because the story continues from the last episode now that Zankou has the Book of Shadows and Homeland Security is closing in on the sisters. There was a lot of character and plot development as the story was well written. There were a few interesting surprises and turn of events. The ending was interesting and had a feel good vibe to it. I look forward to watching the 8th and final season!!!!!!!moreless
  • The Charmed Ones' Last Stand

Something Wicca This Way Goes-When the sisters try to divert Zankou's attention from the Nexus, he hatches a plan to absorb all their powers. However, when the girls realize what Zankou is up to, they are faced with a life-altering decision: sacrifice their powers or their lives.

Feeling like a series finale, "Something Wicca This Way Goes" is the best finale since "All Hell Breaks Loose". The stakes are high against the sisters, like they haven't had since the Source and it really feels like they won't make it in the end. One thing I love about the episode are all the references from the past 7 years like Quake, theconfidencespell, Andy, Phoebe turning into a Banshee and so many others. It gives a great sense ofnostalgia, making the episode feel even more like a series finale. Zankou really proves to be one of the finest villains of the series as he always remains two steps ahead of the sisters' in this episode as he uses to the Book to steal their powers and take the Nexus in. The sisters are really put in a tough position and I'm glad that they end up being alone in the end to stop Zankou, even realizing that sacrificing themselves is the only way to save the day. It was great to see Victor again and it makes sense that Piper and Phoebe would trust their father totake care ofWyatt and Chris. The goodbye scene between the sisters and the boys was really heartbreaking especially Piper breaking apart while holding little Chris. The final confrontation between Zankou and the Charmed Ones is action-packed, I especially loved the brief moment where the sisters surround the book, hold hands and chant "The Power of 3, Will Set Us Free". It's probably one of my favorite moments from Charmed and seeing that spell used again is a reminder of what the series wasinitially: 3 strong, independent women/sisters who happen to be witches. It was nice to be reminded of that during the final moments (or what seemed like at the time) of the series. Zankou's vanquish (as well as the Nexus) was awesome and the way the sisters' death is left as a mystery for a few moments is handled well.

I also surprisingly love how Sheridan's plot with Homeland Security. Sheridan's death by Zankou was actually intense ( not to mention, long overdo!) Watching SWAT teams, the police, etc. surrounding the manor was definitely reminiscent of "All Hell Breaks Loose", especially when they all storm the house after the sisters' vanquish Zankou. The sisters' eventual reveal was indeed surprising and I found their plan to fake their deaths actually a decent way to end the story. They get normal lives, don't have to worry about anyone trying to expose them again and demons coming after them anymore. I also liked the moment of Darryl realizing that the sisters were alive but it's kind of bittersweet since this is Darryl's finalappearanceon Charmed. It's a shame because Darryl deserved to be apart of the "real" series finale and the reason for Darryl notappearingnext season is just insulting! Anyway, despite a good finale, there are some glaring flaws that stop it from being great. 1) Those stupid magical creatures return yet again and seeing Zankou turning into a pig with his head still normal....O_0 Just No! 2) The writers once against forget their previously establishedmythology! Vampires are immune to the powers of witches yet Piper, Paige and Phoebe easily kill a couple of bats with their powers! 3) The page to call for a witch's power was ripped out of the book, yet it looks perfectly fine! Yeah, I know it was another reference to the past but it's like the writers can't seem to remember the little things and that's kind of annoying when fans can! All and All, 'Something Wicca This Way Goes" is a good send-off to Charmed, if it was in fact the final episode. It definitely wraps up the series better than the real final episode did. Next stop, Season 8....*shivers*moreless
  • Zankou and the Nexus... and mutual destruction.

Thank God for Season 8. Yes, it may have had its rough spots, but it ended the right way. I couldn't imagine Charmed if the series ended with this episode instead of the superior in every way Forever Charmed. The best thing about this episode, besides the name, is the best thing about this season- Zankou. I am a big Oded Fehr fan, and his Zankou will remain the best demon, besides Cole, from Charmed. It is actually a shame that we never see him again, but at least he goes out in a blaze of glory and at least he takes Sheridan out before he goes. As usual, I find the entire exposure plot involving homeland security lame and preposterous. But it does end with Sheridan's demise, so it has that going for it. And excuse me, but isn't this a role reversal for Darryl's wife? Wasn't she always the one that said he had to protect the sisters and the greater good? Why the complete change?

I agree that the Darryl plot ended well, anyway. It was great to see an important character like him get a happy send off.

Frankly, the whole plot of this episode makes a lot more sense if it HAD been the final episode, as much as that would suck. What was the sense of faking their deaths if Wyatt and Chris are still alive to get threatened by demons? And again, what happened to the greater good? Screw that, I guess.

Great scene when Piper says good bye to her children. I was very moved. Good bye to a great bad guy in Zankou. Apparently the Nexus wasn't too important since the sisters go all Season 8 without it.moreless

    The ending that never was

Another cracker from Brad Kern. Love him or hate him, you have to admit he does write some storming instalments. There's stacks of action in this one and, with it being the season finale, you really do feel anything could happen.

With Zankou controlling both the Manor and the Book, and with most of the world's police lined up outside, the whole hour has a dark inevitability which hasn't been seen since Charmed and Dangerous. Seeing the girls say goodbye to their father really brings this home. And what an ending! Writing an episode which may or may not have been the last ever was always going to be tough but Brad's solution leaves the door ajar just enough for the sisters to be able to come back. That last scene, with Darryl watching as the Charmed Ones walk away from their old lives, is a classic.

As this might have been the last episode, there were always bound to be plenty of retro moments. Phoebe's mention of Quake has to be the best, and the astral projection is a nice nod to Prue. On the downside, the effects are kind of average and we are forced to endure yet more ridiculous magical creatures, although seeing so many of them die is rather satisfying. As for Zankou turning into a pig, I'm just going to pretend that never happened.

The Homeland Security plot works well, and creates some useful threads for Season Eight. After a year and a half of tormenting the Charmed Ones, Inspector Sheridan finally gets her comeuppance when she is zapped by Zankou. Showing her demise through her own hidden camera is very cool and just a little freakish.

I'm so glad Darryl gets to go out on a high. Dorian Gregory has been one of the unsung heroes of this show and it's great to see him so involved in his final week. He even gets the last line. Charmed will never be the same again. Final body count for the season stands at an impressive 119, comprising 98 demons, 13 vampires, 6 pirates, 1 half-demon and 1 mortal. Of these, 58 are vanquished by the Charmed Ones, 21 by Leo, 9 by Zankou and 31 by various others.

    Seven down, one to go!

    Score: 9.5moreless
  • When the sisters try to divert Zankou's attention from the Nexus, he hatches a plan to absorb all their powers.

This episode was so amazing. It was an amazing seventh season finale. I enjoyed watching this episode so much. It seemed so much like a series finale. It was very well written. I loved this episode so much. The ending was just perfect. The sisters were under their new identities, and everyone thought they were dead, but they really weren't. But now demons don't know who they are, nor do people. It was perfect. I loved it. This episode alone could have gotten the show another seven seasons, but didn't. It still had a good run, though. This episode is one of the many great installments to this amazing series.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (37)

    • TRIVIA: The first demon to die in this episode is the 500th evil being to be vanquished on the show.

    • TRIVIA: During Season 7, a total of 119 evil beings are vanquished, comprising 98 demons, 13 vampires, 6 pirates, 1 half-demon and 1 mortal. Of these, 58 are vanquished by the Charmed Ones, 21 by Leo and 9 by Zankou.

    • TRIVIA: This is the final episode to feature the exterior of the Manor with the Halliwell women. As of Season 8 only stock shots are used.

    • Zankou has used Phoebe's power to anticipate that they were going to the Bat Queen demon for help. Since he's so sure that the power will mean he can be ahead of them in their game, how come they manage to trick him so many times when they astrally project? Surely the power would have made him aware of what he was dealing with, thereby giving him the perfect opportunity to kill them whilst they're lying on the sofa unconscious!

    • After there is a huge explosion in the basement, the police go straight into the house and seem only to be checking that the air is okay. They would have no way of knowing if the building itself were safe or not, given that the whole foundations could have been compromised. The last thing they would have done is to send hordes of police into a possibly unsafe structure. For that matter, how come an explosion that large takes out some of the support beams of the room, but leaves the stairs intact?

    • In the episode How To Make A Quilt Out Of Americans, Aunt Gail tore the power stripping spell out of the Book of Shadows. However in this episode, the page is back in the book and looks as if it was never torn out.

    • TRIVIA: This episode is the last one that shows the basement.

    • TRIVIA: This is the third season finale to feature the girls being exposed. The first was in season 3 when the girls are exposed on TV and the second time was in season 4 when the girls are exposed by a inspector (who is also a witch hunter).

    • In the season 4 episode Bite Me it's said that the vampires are immune to witches' powers. So how come Piper was able to blow them up and Phoebe was able to hit them with potions and vanquish them when it couldn't work back then?

    • TRIVIA: This is the last time the Nexus is ever mentioned or referred to.

    • TRIVIA: In this episode Phoebe and Piper are discussing ideas to vanquish Zankou, in their conversation they mention events from the past. These include the confidence spell Piper casted on one of the guys working at Quake, the switching body spell Phoebe had cast on herself, the love spell casted by Phoebe and Piper to make men fall for them, and the spell that turned everyone at P3 into an animal in the episode. Piper also mentions that they could turn Phoebe into a Banshee so she can kill Zankou.

    • TRIVIA: The song played in this episode after the intro is Billy Idol's "Evil Eye".

    • TRIVIA: Various things from previous episodes were discussed in this episode, such as the deaths of Inspectors Trudeau, Rodregieuz, and Davidson, Prue being able to astral project, the time Phoebe changed everyone into animals, the time Pheobe became a banshee, Piper working at Quake, and more.

    • TRIVIA: Season 7 is the only season in the series that didn't have an additional "guest" cast aside from the series regulars (Prue, Piper, Phoebe, Paige, Leo, Darryl). Season 1 has Ted King, Season 2 Greg Vaughan and Karis Paige Bryant, Season 3-5 Julian McMahon, Season 6 Drew Fuller, and Season 8 Kaley Cuoco.

    • When Zankou throws the Charmed Ones across the basement one of Phoebe's high heel wedge sandals falls off, in the next shot not only is she wearing both of her shoes but they have suddenly turned into tennis shoes.

    • In the season 4 episode "Charmed and Dangerous" Phoebe's power was the last one the Source targeted, saying it was hardly worth taking. In this episode, Zankou, a more cunning demon, stole Phoebe's power first, recognizing it would give him the ability to anticipate the Charmed Ones' actions.

    • TRIVIA: When Brad Kern was unsure as to whether the show was coming back for an eighth season he had two endings for the final episode. One ending was the episode where the girls faked their deaths & the other was the episode "Forever Charmed" which did eventually become the series finale.

    • They came back from astral projecting at Magic School and then went upstairs. Then Zankou came and they orbed to the basement. Zankou followed them almost immediately. When did they find time to astral project again? And where did they put their bodies?

    • How is it that when all three sisters' astral projections disappear at different times, all three wake up simultaneously in the Manor?

    • Why didn't Paige orb the Book of Shadows to her just after Zankou had stolen it? Why didn't the sisters say that the Shadow/Nexus had also been in Phoebe?

    • TRIVIA: The season 7 villain Zankou is named after a small chain of middle eastern takeout restaurants near the Warner Bros. studios in Burbank, California called Zankou Chicken. Hence Piper's Spaceballs-inspired quip "What's the matter, Zankou... Chicken?".

    • TRIVIA: An alternate ending was written for the season 7 finale, that included Rose McGowan saying "I don't think we're going to get out of this one... alive". The girls are killed at the end and Leo never shows back up. After reading this ending though the writers couldn't agree so they decided to keep the aired ending.

    • When the door is magically closed at the end a jingle sound is heard. In previous episodes when Prue used her telekenetic power a similar noise was heard. Could this be a sign she was watching over her sisters?

    • TRIVIA: This episode marks the final appearance of series regular, Dorian Gregory (Darryl Morris). During his seven years on the series he appeared in 66 episodes, which incidentally is the same amount of episodes that Shannen Doherty appeared in. His character's absence would be explained a few episodes into season 8.

    • TRIVIA: Inspector Sheridon was killed by Zankou with an energy ball in the manor, exposing magic to the FBI, Homeland Security, SWAT, etc.

    • TRIVIA: At the end of this episode, the Halliwell sisters have destroyed the Nexus, vanquished Zankou and glamoured themseslves & Leo into new bodies in order to take on normal life.

    • TRIVIA: Continuing the season finale tradition, at the end of this episode the Manor door was magically closed.

    • TRIVIA: This episode marks the third time somebody who was investigating the Halliwells has been killed. The first two killed were Inspectors Rodriguez and Davidson - and now Inspector Sheridan is killed.

    • When the Charmed Ones are in the attic they're searching for a spell, but they get distracted for a minute to look outside. When they start searching again for the spell, Zankou appears, and attacks, the Charmed Ones teleport down to the basement, and Zankou follows immediately afterward. How do they know the spell to recite in the basement, when they hadn't found the right page in the book yet when Zankou attacked?

    • TRIVIA: It was unknown at the time of writing if "Charmed" would be renewed for an eighth season so Brad Kern wrote a finale which offers closure to the sisters but also leaves things open for another season.

    • When Zankou blasted Sheriden with an energy ball that was seen by all the FBI, why didn't the Cleaners come and take care of it? The Cleaners are supposed to be neutral, so there for, wouldn't they take care of it, or do they only cover up good magic exposer.

    • Zankou can steal a witch's powers with the power-stripping spell, but Paige, being also a half-whitelighter, would be partially immune. She could have orbed herself out at the last second.

    • Zankou realizes that the Charmed ones are only astrals of themselves then he waits so they will wake up downstaris, walk two floors up to the attic, get the book, flip through it, check outside of the window and see the feds suround them and only THEN does he teleport in - Why did he wait so long?

    • When the book was stolen from the sisters in the season 2 episode "Witch Trial" they used the first spell in order to call it back. Even if they couldn't do it again from afar because Zankou protected the book, it seems logical that this is the spell they need to get it back.

    • When the potion to strip a witch's power was used in the season 2 episode How To Make A Quilt Out Of Americans it required that the victim swallow it, throwing it wasn't enough. The potion itself wasn't enough since they needed to read a spell. In fact, the spell appears in this episode at the bottom of the page were the spell was written.

    • How can the feds (or anyone) really believe the sisters are dead? There were no bodies in the basement or anywhere else in the house. It's unlikely their bodies were completely disintegrated since the basement seems relatively intact.

    • Zankou said he was the first demon to see Magic School but in the season 7 episode Styx Feet Under a demon entered the school, and in the season 7 episode The Bare Witch Project, a demon came in with Lady Godiva. While the other demons have entered Magic School, they have all died, with little time to inform the demon community. Therefore he may not be the first, but he also wouldn't have been likely to hear about the others who did get in and other demons would probably believe so as well.

  • QUOTES (12)

    • (After seeing the sisters and Leo in their new identities walking away from the house)
Darryl (laughing): Well all right, all right.

    • Zankou (of the Nexus): It's just sheer, unadulterated power. The kind the Charmed Ones have been harboring for far too long. Now it's my turn to play.
Kahn: What'll be your first move—once you possess it, I mean?
Zankou: Oh, I don't know. I'll have full access to the Book of Shadows, of course, which means I'll have ultimate power. (Laughs.) I hope I don't get bored.

    • Zankou (about the Charmed Ones): You can't take them head on. It doesn't work. That's how demons die. Not this demon, not this time.

    • Sheridan (to Keyes, about the Charmed Ones): Look, you can do whatever you want with them afterwards. You can expose them, hide them, dissect them, I don't care. I just want to be the one to bust them.

    • Zankou (after he absorbed the Nexus): You can't stop me now.
      Paige: Oh yeah.
      Piper: Watch us.

    • Paige: I don't think we're getting out of this one, girls.

    • Piper (after Leo has been glamoured into another man): Cute, I can live with that.

    • Leo: I'm sorry, do we know each other?
Piper (glamoured into a different woman): I think so. After all, we're married.

    • Piper (after using Prue's astral projecting spell): Thank you, Prue.

    • Phoebe: How about a love spell? We could make him fall for one of us.
      Piper: Sorry, I'm taken.

    • Piper (to Phoebe about finding a man): Yeah, but you're not that desperate, are you?
Phoebe: Yeah well those demons do have a way to keep you warm at night.
Piper: Yeah, but that's only because they have fireballs.

    • Paige(right before Piper transforms Leo into a different body): Don't worry, we'll make you good-looking.

  • NOTES (4)

    • Zankou: Patience is a virtue.

This line was said in the film The Mummy by Rachel Weisz. This movie also starred Oded Fehr who plays Zankou in this episode.

    • Title: Something Wicca This Way Goes

This is a reference to the pilot episode "Something Wicca This Way Comes". That was when they started their lives as witches and this was meant as the end, since it was originally written as the series finale, if the network hadn't picked up the series for another season. Also, like the original episode it also made a reference to a Shakespearian quote "Something wicked this way comes".
