  • Soul Survivor

    10
Soul Survivor was a perfect and very entertaining episode of Charmed and I really enjoyed watching because the story was awesome, there was incredible character development and Leo and Chris go back in time! It was great to see Paige faced with another issue forcing her to follow her instincts while ignoring her sister's advice. I wish we could have seen more of Leo and Chris back in the past, and it was great seeing the soul auction with lots of demons. Piper was trying to date but Wyatt scared all the guys away. I certainly look forward to watching the next episode!!!!!!!!!moreless
  • One word: dinosaur.

    4.0
It's another Paige-centric episode this time around, and although nowhere near as nauseating as the last episode, there's just no spark to the script. It's lifeless. Soulless, even. Kudos should be given for hitting the ground on a somber note, especially after the overdose of random as of late, but...oh, wait, what was I saying? Dinosaur! Come again? Oh, yeah, Dinosaur. Tralalolz. This is the most genius afterthought, pretty much ever. It were as if the execs realised just how incredibly boring Paige's main storyline was, and so the only logical solution to remedy this situation was to throw a dinosaur at it. When in doubt, add a pinch of prehistoric. Classic Charmed.

Poor Paige. Like, honestly, who really wanted to watch whatever was happening with the youngest Charmed One when you have Jurassic Park 4 as a subplot? Phoebe, meanwhile, is clashing with Spencer Ricks, written with all of the subtlety of a shotgun blast to the face. Men are total dicks. Gobblegobbgle. So, naturally, Phoebe turns him back into a turkey, kind of as a cheeky throw back to season 5. But we hate season five. And there's a T-rex chasing Leo and Chris. So, really, America, who cares? And there's Piper, auditioning for Worst Mother of the Year award. She's having trouble finding a man whose comfortable enough to date a woman with a child (cos, we're all total dicks. Gobblegobble), but once she does, she has no problem leaving her child with a TOTAL stranger while she pops off to find her jacket. He could have been background demon#4 for frak sake, Piper! Get your shit together!

Anyways. So there's a T-rex. And, ya know, it doesn't look half bad!

If there's any kind of ongoing arc this season, it's overcrowding! This is an episode filled with mind-numbing subplots, and a dino excursion that pretty much eclipses... well, everything! If you throw ninjas and/or dinosaurs into an episode, that's pretty much all I'll care about. But the thing is, even if we didn't have dinosaurs to deal with, there's still too much time allowed for subplots we really, really do not give a flying frick about: Piper's having dating trouble? Uh, just stfu and get back with Leo already. Phoebe and Spencer Ricks? No one cares. And Paige? GET A REAL JOB. Not even a solid guest-start can save this one, which, in retrospect, could have been a pretty solid episode if enough attention had been paid to the whole 'trading souls' plot.

Stand-alone doesn't look good on season 6. I'd like some sort of an arc soon, please. Kthxbai.moreless
  • Not As Soulless As I Thought!

    6.5
Soul Survivor-In an attempt to save her boss' soul, Paige goes behind her sisters backs and makes a deal with a demon. Meanwhile, Piper learns that Wyatt has been sabotaging her dates; Phoebe gets a new writing partner; and Chris and Leo accidentally travel back in time.

Well, well well, do I see a decent episode of Charmed? Sure, "Soul Survivor" is nothing to ride home about but at least the writers manage to write in some decent character development for once.Paige was actually shown to be pretty noble and selfless her, wanting to sacrifice herself to save an innocent, it's actually a lot like how Prue was back in the day. Doing whatever shedid to save an innocent, which was nice to see. Sure Paige was being a bit stubborn and naive not understanding the consequences of her actions, butit actually brought some decent sister scenes between our 3 leads for once, bringing up issues about how one sister going soloaffects their whole Charmed destiny as a trio, whichis good to remind the audience, considering we haven't had a lot of sisters moments as of late. Paige's plan in the endworks, leading to a cool confrontation where Piper and Phoebe unleash their powers at the demonauction. The one-liners were great too. I love this bit:

Grimlock: "I'll bid 100, 000 for all of them."

Piper: "Sold! To the dead grimlock."

    *Blows him up*

The sisters managed to save not only Larry but multiple souls that were captured. We even got to know the inoccent like the old days as we meet Larry's wife and find outexactly what led up to his death.Even the demon of the week, Zahn, was a formidable villain. I especially loved the moment where Paige through the potion and he freezes it in mid-air and throws an energy ball at it almost simaltaneously. But of course, in Chrmed fashion of late, his vanquish is lousy. Seriously, what happened to sisters using Power of 3 spells to vanquish demons? It just doesn't feel like the "real" Charmed anymore when all the sisters do now is either have Piper blow up the demon orjust throw a potion and problem solved. Sadly, "Soul Survivor" falls short of above avergae given 1) The stupid sub-plot with Leo and Chris stuck in a time portal! Seriosuly, enough with the horrible CGI! That dinosaur effect has not aged well...AT ALL. 2) Richard's back and I almost fall asleep everytime he's on screen! Seriously, Paige, what is so great about this guy! 3) Piper's whol dating plot is already getting ridiculous witch Wyatt scaring them off with his glowing eyes. I mean reallly, just let Piper date and do her thing already. I'm glad they are showing that Piper and Leo's situation is affecting Wyatt, but watching grown men run away like 5 year old girls isn't the way to so it. Anyway, "Soul Survivor" is about as good as Charmed has gotten this season so far.moreless
  • Not enough role!

    10
I only watch Chris on Charmed, not girls! I am huge fan of Chris! Chris had very very small role in this episode! I am really upset about it. But in the ending of this episode, Leo and Chris kind make bit friend and starting to trust Chris very slow, which makes me very happy! This episode is very boring. It is stupid soul stuff. Charmed sisters are not my favorite character or real life either. I am so focused on Chris! This episode is really awful episode for me to watch. Believe me, I dont want to watch this episode, I hope so!moreless
  • Paige takes self-righteousness and independence to a new level, otherwise known as insanity.

    7.5
As seems the norm for Season 6 up until Chris-Crossed, this episode has some great moments and dialogue, but the plot is full of holes that would make a sci fi movie proud and Paige has a boyfriend, which means she is babbling nonsense and just being all around annoying.

Paige is determined to save a guy who isn't exactly an innocent, having made a deal with a demon trading earthly success for his soul, but you would think this guy was the founder of the Peace Core by the way Paige talks about him. Anyway, the sisters wisely see the danger and the fairness of the deal and are against it, but as usual, that doesn't matter. All that matters to Paige is what she wants. So, she goes so far as to trade her own soul to save the innocent, figuring her sisters would save her.

Only one thing wrong with her plan. She signed the fiery line before ever seeing where the contracts were kept. It was only sheer dumb luck (or actually the script) that the demon showed her where the contracts were so that her sisters could burn them and set her free.

Anyway, the best part of the episode was Wyatt freaking out Piper's potential boyfriends. Great stuff. Of course, she should have suspected that right away considering Wyatt's powers, never a good idea to leave him with a stranger at any time.

Phoebe's side plot was just an excuse to have a misogynist turned into a turkey and a pig. I'm sure the women found this entertaining.

Anyway, at times annoying but still watchable episode, pretty standard for the first half of Season 6. Fortunately, Chris-Crossed and then the introduction of Gideon isn't far away.moreless

  • TRIVIA (17)

    • When Paige and Richard are having their "destiny" talk a man in a blue shirt is walking behind them. As the camera switches between Paige and Richard the man changes distance behind them from close, to farther back, gone, then close again, and finally walking out of the frame.

    • When Paige arrives to the manor and passes the kitchen you can see that her eyes are clearly red because of the crying. Anyway seconds later when she is in the other room her eyes are suddenly normal and not red.

    • When Leo pushes Chris' head through the time portal and then back out he has a helmet on but it seems unlikely that someone from that time would have seen Chris' head hovering between realities and put a helmet on it. But how else would the helmet get there?

    • TRIVIA: This is the second episode that focuses on a Faustian deal made between a human and a demon. The first was Wrestling with Demons, from season 3.

    • When Piper goes to the sunroom and Paige follows her, she says "He sold his soul, it was his choice". How Piper could know that he has sold his soul? Paige didn't know till Larry told her just before Piper got home and Paige didn't say anything to Piper about it.

    • TRIVIA: In this episode, Googy Gress reprises his role as Spencer Ricks, Phoebe's advice columnist rival, from last season's episode "House Call".

    • TRIVIA: This is the first and only time a dinosaur is shown on the series.

    • TRIVIA: Wyatt displays a new trick in this episode - he "orbs" his eyes at all of Piper's dates, including Richard.

    • In "The Courtship of Wyatt's Father" Paige offers Leo a drink after the party and he refuses saying that Elders can't drink, but at the end of this episode Leo buys himself and Chris a beer.

    • Even the demon who hurled the energy ball at Phoebe couldn't have changed its direction after she fired it, so it's not possible that Phoebe could have.

    • In the beginning, the clock said 11:58, it's amazing how it became 12:00 just seconds after Paige walked to the elevator. That was enough time for Paige to be out of the building, yet she was just outside of the office.

    • When Paige is flipping through the Book of Shadows, she stops on the Monkey Totem page. The camera then goes to the other sisters who are talking with her. But when the camera goes back to Paige a few seconds later, the book is opened to the entry for Kurzon.

    • Wasn't the whole point of Paige's plan to destroy the contracts before killing Zahn? Well, they weren't destroyed. We keep seeing them burning even after Zahn's death.

    • How exactly is Phoebe able to push an energy ball back? If she is using her empathy power to force the demon to fire, firing her own energy ball or maybe even becoming immune to the power, but redirecting it in mid-air doesn't fit.

    • Isn't Phoebe completely abusing the "no personal gain" issue by turning Spencer Ricks into a pig and keeping him like that all day? Not to mention, nobody noticed the big pink pig just standing in that office?

    • If Zahn has so much power, shouldn't he be able to protect his contracts with something that would prevent Piper from blowing it up so easily? After all that is his most prized possession.

    • The Charmed world usually makes "free choice" a major issue, but if all those souls have made their own choice to make the deal, how can the sisters interfere? The free choice rule has been something that neither the Elders, the Source nor even the Angel of Destiny can interfere with. So how come the Charmed Ones do it without anyone caring?

  • QUOTES (22)

    • Zahn (to Larry, after reshackling his wrists and ankles): Consider yourself repossessed!

    • Leo: What is that? Is that a time portal...is that what that is? What are you using it for?
Chris: I don't have to answer that.
Leo: I thought you said you had nothing to hide.
Chris: I don't have to answer that either.

    • Phoebe: A date? Really? Does he know about Wyatt?
Piper: No, and he's not gonna anytime soon. At least not till after the honeymoon.

    • Phoebe (about Spencer Ricks): Ick! Look at that pig. Eh, and I don't mean literally. At least not anymore.

    • Phoebe: I've surrendered to being the middle sister.

    • Phoebe: Piper, how did you have time to book Steadman in your club? Between raising my nephew and trying to date and vanquishing...
      Piper (sarcastically): A sister?

    • Piper: What the hell is going on?
      Paige: Bitch later, vanquish now.
Piper and Phoebe turn around and throw potions at Zahn, vanquishing him. They then turn back to Paige.
Phoebe: I love watching lawyers explode.
      Paige smiles.
Piper (angrily): Now can I bitch?

    • A female demon throws an energy ball at Phoebe, but she channels her powers and reverses the energy ball, vanquishing the demon.
      Piper: Way to channel.

    • A swirl of lights bring Phoebe and Paige to the underground auction house.
      Female Demon: More Charmed Ones.
Grimlock: One hundred for all three.
Piper: Sold, to the dead Grimlock. (she blows him up.)

    • Wyatt "orbs" his eyes at Richard.
Richard: Does he do that a lot?
Phoebe and Piper look at Wyatt.
      Phoebe: Uhh!
      Wyatt's eyes stop orbing.
      Piper: Wyatt?
Phoebe: What is he doing? Why is he doing that?
Piper (realizing): Apparently, he's trying to scare away all of my dates. You little runt. Did your father teach you that?
Phoebe: Okay, so not the time.
Piper: Right. (to Wyatt) You're grounded.
Piper hands Wyatt over to Phoebe.
      Phoebe: Okay, back to Paige.

    • Phoebe (about Paige): You don't think Zahn, uh...
Piper: I don't know, but if he didn't, I will.

    • Leo (Gratefully): Thanks for not listening to me.
      Chris: Anytime.

    • Leo: If one of us gets caught, the other one needs to keep going, for Wyatt's sake.
Chris: Oh, you believe me about him now?
Leo: No. I just want to let you know what's gonna happen if you get caught.

    • Phoebe throws a potion at Spencer Ricks, turning him into a pig.
Phoebe (Unsympathetically): Must have been the wrong potion.

    • Chris (about the dinosaur): I think he's gone. He looks gone. Do you think he's gone?
      Leo: No.
      Chris: Neither do I.

    • Chris (to Leo): Man, you are old.

    • Piper (Suspiciously): What's going on?
Paige: Oh, you know, just, uh... summoning a ghost.

    • Phoebe is talking to Spencer Ricks, with an amber coloured potion hidden in her hand. She looks at it longingly.
Spencer: Let me ask you a question. Do you ever get letters from anybody other than a bunch of whiny chicks?
Phoebe throws the potion at Spencer Ricks, turning him into a turkey. Phoebe looks at the turkey, thinking for a moment. She rolls her eyes and tosses another potion at the turkey, turning it back into Spencer Ricks.
Phoebe (annoyed): As you were saying?

    • Phoebe: Okay, first of all, get your feet off my desk, and, secondly, get out of my chair.
Spencer Ricks: Aww, and here I thought we were gonna be friends.

    • Phoebe (To Piper): You know, not getting any is making you bitter.
Piper (Gesturing to Wyatt): Hel-lo. Hi. Excuse me. Do you mind?
Phoebe: Oh, he doesn't know what we're talking about. He's ten months old. He thinks we're talking about milk, for God sakes.
Piper: Phoebe, he conjured a dragon. I wouldn't put anything past him.
      Phoebe: That's a good point.

    • Phoebe (Talking about doing a column with Spencer Ricks): I have half a mind to call Jason and complain about it, but I don't want to use our relationship for leverage.
Piper: What's the use of sleeping with your boss then?
Phoebe: Because I actually enjoy sleeping with my boss.
      Piper: Yeah, don't brag.

    • Piper: You need a hand?
Phoebe: Uh, sure, if you wanna go get my car washed, go to the dry cleaners for me, and go to work for me, too. That would be great.
Piper: Only if you can run the club, go to the dentist and raise Wyatt for me.

  • NOTES (2)

  • ALLUSIONS (4)

    • Chris: You're the one who sent us back to Jurassic Park.

Jurassic Park is a novel by Michael Crichton which was later made into a movie. It is about an amusement park of cloned dinosaurs which escape and terrorize the people on the island.

    • Paige: What, did you make some sort of Faustian deal?

This is a reference to a German legend in which Faust, a medieval scholar makes a pact with the devil. The term "faustian" has come to denote acts or constellations involving human hubris which eventually lead to doom.

    • Piper asks why Phoebe is playing Solomon.

This is a reference to Solomon of the Bible. He sat in judgement and one famous decision was that of two women, who both claimed to be the mother of a baby, he determined which was the real mother.

    • Title: Soul Survivor

This is a reference to the term "sole survivor".
