Heart Is a Handout
AIRED:

Jed and Dr. Hyatt go undercover as members of a hobo community to protect a man known as Doc, acknowledged leader of the community. Years ago Doc was disinherited by his wealthy father for behaving irresponsibly with money, but now his dying father wants him back, and others in his family want him dead so they won't have to pay him an allowance. When Doc winds up inheriting the entire estate, he goes to town with it, making Checkmate's job more difficult.

  • Surreal stew

A truly surreal stew. McClure comes off looking pretty impressive here; it turns out that once he stops grinning and starts acting he's actually a rather redoubtable presence. The butler was another amusing subsidiary character (which seemed to be a forte of this series during the second season). And of course the good Dr Hyatt as a hobo was worth a solid chuckle or two. The whole thing turned so weird though as it went farther along that it was hard to know what to do besides gawk aghast at the sheer loony spectacle of it. Oh yes, and even though the Doc did go on a rampage toward the end (which was bad), he did break that folksinger's guitar (which was very very good indeed). Seriously, I had been wanting to bash the thing over that guy's head for a long time. Found it amusing that in the finale the Doc was not allowed to return to the hobo camp, where he had been comfortable for 15 years; apparently such a notion was a little too non-conformist for the mindset of the times.moreless
