Sam tries to beat Gary at his own game in a grudge basketball game by recruiting Boston Celtics' star Kevin McHale as a substitute bartender at Cheers.
  • One of the better later episodes of the series.

    "Great"
The Cheers gang recruits Kevin McHale to help them beat "Gary's Olde Time Tavern" in a basketball game.

A pretty good example of a later-in-the-series episode of "Cheers" -- good ensemble bits and enough funny parts to throw to most of the major players. To me, this story is especially funny for the lines Woody uses when discussing the rivalry between his Hanover, Indiana and Larry Bird's French Lick. In some ways, the competiton angle with the other tavern is one of the better angles "Cheers" takes after all the years and a lot of soap opera among most of the cast during this time. Good examples of double trickery at the conclusion and the gang pulling together. With the exception of some Lilith (and not really counting Carla), this is one of those "all guys" type stories.moreless

    • During the basketball game, while Kevin McHale is helping Cheers dominate Gary's team, Sam is seen on the bench smoking a cigar. Arnold "Red" Auerbach, who won 9 NBA championships as coach of the Boston Celtics, was legendary for lighting up a cigar on the bench when he believed that his team had the game won. At the time of this episode's airing, McHale played for the Boston Celtics and Auerbach was the team's president.

    • In another show,Frasier tells Cliff that his father was a scientist instead of a cop. On Frasier,he misses his mother greatly but on Cheers he has not very many nice things to say about her. Also,John Mahoney plays a piano player in one show and Gilpin (who'll play Roz later) shows up as a reporter who interviews Woody when he runs for council.

    • Gary stops by to show off his two ringers and says he's open to any wagers, which no one at Cheers takes his offer. Yet 5 minutes later, Sam tells Kevin McHale he's got a $5000 bet with Gary.

    • Repsonse: In an episode of Frasier, an explanation was given. It turns out Frasier and Martin had had a big row over the phone, and didn't speak to each other for a while, so that is why Frasier told Sam his father was dead. In this case though, Frasier may also have lied to make Sam feel guilty.

    • In order to get Sam to give him the $5000 meant for the orphans, Frasier tells Sam that both of his parents died when he was in his mid-30s. However, his father is alive for the series Frasier.

  • QUOTES (7)

    ADD QUOTES
    • Gary: Fine, eight years of humiliating you weenies is enough. I'm going to find a tougher gang to humiliate. Woody: You can look all over Boston, you won't find any weenies tougher than us.

    • Carla: Give me some money. It's for a good cause. Man: What cause? Carla: Cause I said.

    • Woody: (looking at a X-ray) God, the skin's all gone.

    • Sam: Then I'll get Larry Bird. Woody: No, no not Bird. If he's in, I'm out. Cliff: Woody you tell me you know Larry Bird? Woody: I don't have to know him. He's from French Lick, Indiana. He's a doofus. Carla: So what? You're from Indiana and you're a doofus. Woody: Yeah but I would rather be a doofus from Hanover than a doofus from French Lick. Everyone from Hanover knows that French Lick is the doofus capital of Indiana. Of course everyone from French Lick thinks it's Hanover. It's the fuel of a raging controversy.

    • Frasier: I've just been feeling a bit edgy these days. Woody: Why's that Dr. Crane? Frasier: Lilith in her own compulsive little way made the mistake of asking me if I thought she looked fat. Norm: And what did you say? Frasier: I told her she looked just fine. Norm: Rookie mistake. So what kind of punishment are you getting? Frasier: I'm not getting any. Norm: Oh you got off easy. Frasier: No, I'm not getting any. Norm: No, you're getting off easy.

    • Sam: How are we going to do this? Woody: Well, short people in front. Sam: You just made me slap you in front of a priest.

    • Sam: But that's our money. Kevin: Shame on you Sam, you know its the orphans' money.

    • Kevin McHale wonders out loud if the "Male Gorilla" x-ray might be "Laimbeer's". He is alluding to then-Detroit Pistons center Bill Laimbeer, who was widely regarded as one of the most hated players in the NBA. In fact, McHale and Laimbeer had been ejected from a game the previous season for fighting with each other.
