1.Woody - the fact he was congressman  the possibilities are endless

    2. Norm- we always heard from Norm how bad Vera was, it would have been interesting if the show had revealed her

3.Cliff - being a postal worker it would have been interesting to see Cliff at work

these characters were the funniest characters on Cheers I think anyone of these characters would have been good spinoffs

I agree with the Norm choice

I reckon Sam would've done quite well too

none, and I tell you why, because they all were so extreme in behaviour that it would be unberable to sustain a half hour of Woody naiveté, or Cliff's "little known facts" or Carla's rudeness, rebecca's crying matches, or even Diane's snobisms. truth be told Frasier was one of the less extreme characters that needed little or none to be toned down for the spin off, because he was almost always the straight man in the comedy of cheers, and thus the more "real" one. even so, Kelsey Grammer said that they made the character a little more grounded for the spin off, because when someone is the center of a show, he has to be a little less cartoony, leaving that to the supporting players.
some attempts at spin offs change the character completely. the Benson on soap is much more sarcastic than the Benson on "Benson". in the spin off he's much more politically correct and "do gooder", than the lovely sarcastic creation Susan Harris penned on soap.

Are we forgetting Frasier? That turned out very successful. Then again, the Tortellis did not. I do agree with the Woody congressman idea. That could have been a good show. I don't think Norm or Cliff or Carla could carry it though.

i think the woody idea could possibly turn out to be like a Joey. where it would be alright for the first couple of episodes then would just suck. what about rebecca? that would be pretty funny. remember, she was backseat becky

but she needs people like Sam around to make her watchable....there's not really much to her besides working in Cheers

I think Frasier would've been more successful and more likable (at least for me) if Lillith had somewhat of a bigger role

More successful? "Frasier" won five consecutive Best Comedy Series Emmys!

Personally I think if Lillith had a bigger role it would have distorted the whole show. By the way I think the Woody spin off would be the best idea and that would get old after at most 4 seasons.

A Woody spinoff? That almost sounds like an Indiana version of "Joey."

But Coach died, so they couldn't spin off of a dead character and didn't he die in real life too?

Frasier did get toned down quite a bit for the spinoff. He tried to strangle Diane on more than one occasion, if I recall right. That's hilarious in a supporting character, but completely unacceptable for the lead of a show!

I don't know how well Cliff would work as a lead...but I would like to know more about what his work life was like. Was he the only nutty one, or was everyone else at the post office just like him?

Nicholas Colasanto died in 1985, and though his character died as well, the writers' explanation for Coach's passing was stilted at best. Nick deserved much more respect than that.

True, but Nicholas Colasanto was dying in real life, and all the people associated with Cheers knew that. He would get dizzy and forget his lines, improvising about topics not in the script. I know his character was like that anyway, but they wrote stuff especially for him because of his encumbrances. I think the storyline was respectful to him, and the way they brought Woody in made for some discussion about Coach's life, not his death.

Storyline? There wasn't any! They said "Coach passed on" and that was that!
