Sam returns to Cheers six months after he sold it to a large corporation to pursue a life of leisure on board a new boat. Now the boat has sunk and he's looking for a job.
  • The perfect new beginning after Diane's departure.

Losing Diane as a major character would appear to be an obstacle even Cheers couldn't overcome. But in hindsight she was a character that had gone about as far as she could have been taken. Season 6 kicked off perfectly. Sam returns after 6 months at sea on his boat only to find Cheers has undergone a major overhaul. The bar is completely redecorated, the customers are stuffy and unfamiliar, and there's a new manager that doesn't fall for Sam's charm. It takes a lot of planning but the gang successfully scheme's to get Sam his job back behind the bar.

This is one of the best season opener episode's you'll get. The writers overcame the loss of a major star and made the transition appear seamless.moreless
  • This is the one in which we meet Rebecca Howe. Sam had sold the bar and taken a his boat for a trip around the world, but sank it, and returned six months later, looking for work.moreless

This is my favorite individual episode. The writers did a brilliant job. In the beginning, it feels like Cheers, yet most of the regulars are strangely missing from the bar. One by one they are brought into the storyline. My favorite bit is when Norm comes in for 'Operation Wayne down the dwain', and says 'not now, you idiot' after hearing Woody yell 'Norm'.
From this point forward, we would see many more recurring characters in the series.moreless
  • A new beginning

At the end of season 5, we said goodbye to Diane. In this episode, we say hello to Rebecca. And thus begins a new era at Cheers.

Whenever you have a character leave, especially an original, you wonder if the show will be just as good, better or worse than before. The writers and casting of Cheers did a good job in creating and casting Rebecca Howe. A business school graduate with dreams of climbing to the top of the corporate ladder. And/or climbing to the top of Evan Drake!

They made a wise decision, and did not clone Diane when creating their new character. She wasn't as book smart as Diane, but wasn't as annoying either. As we get to know Rebecca, she is much more likeable than Diane. And she also had an easier time fitting in with the gang. When she starts off, she is a no nonsense, cold character. But we will see her thaw out and loosen up over the years.

    Welcome to Cheers, Becky!moreless
  • The bar hasn't been the same since Sam left....but he's baaaaack

Ok, so at the end of 'I do, adieu', Diane left for Maine to write her book, but we are informed by Woody that the book thing didn't work out and she headed for Hollywood to write for tv.

We also know that Sam sold the beloved bar to a corporation to sail around the world but he ank so he's back, looking for a job, but he didn't count on Wayne, the boring barkeep and new manager Rebecca, with a major crush on her boss Evan Drake and a sudden dislike for Sam and his come-ons.

Anyway, by the end of the episode, Sam hs his job back after a great plan from Carla and things start to get back to normal.

I thought, with Shelley Long's departure, that i would hate this episode but actually I really enjoyed it and Rebecca came across as fiesty and ice cool as ever. The whole 'Wayne down the dwain' thing was perfect and the writers proved that even without their wonderful former leading lady, they could still be brilliantly funny

And remember, when making a Screaming Viking, ask for your cucumber slightly bruised!moreless

    • Wayne: That drink does not exist. Norm: There's been many a morning I wish to God it hadn't.

    • Sam: This place doesn't even look like my office anymore. Rebecca: Thank you. It wasn't easy.

    • Rebecca: Miss Tortelli, you have a couple of customers in the corner that look like they're on the verge of a good time. You better hurry over there and put your usual stop to it.

    • Carla: Yeah but don't go by me. I've hated every boss I've ever had. Sam: How can you say that? I was your boss. Carla: Yeah right.

    • Frasier: So Carla, what did Eddie say about his impending fatherhood? Carla: He wants to think about it.

    • Eddie: You know I passed Norm Peterson on the stairs and he didn't give me the time of day. Woody: It's 3:15.

    • (About Diane) Sam: I was afraid I was going to walk in here today and see her face everywhere I looked. Instead what I saw was all these silly changes you made. Rebecca: I happen to think it's... Sam: No no, it's good. It helped me. What I'm trying to say is this place is the closest thing I have close to a real home. I want to come back. Please. Rebecca: I'm very sorry, Mr. Malone. I wish I could help.

    • Carla: Time for Operation "Wayne Down The Dwain."

    • (On being a full-time bartender.) Sam: (to Rebecca) Does that include all the perks - dental, medical... horizontal?

    • Rebecca: It's funny. We've only known each other for seconds, and I'm already tired of you.

    • (On his boat sinking.) Sam: I discovered a reef nobody had ever heard of. I even named it after me, too. No Brains Atoll.

    • (Sam on seeing Rebecca for the first time.) Sam: (wide-eyed) Boo-ah!

    • Sam: I don't have enough money to buy an ice cube.

    • Wayne: (leaving in a huff) Miss Howe, I'm sorry. I gave it a shot, but obviously I'm not liked by the customers or the employees! "Screaming Viking!" Al: I haven't been called that since my honeymoon!

    • Rebecca: Alright, I'll give you another chance. But I want to make something very clear - you've just got one chance left, and as far as I'm concerned, again, in baseball-ese: bottom of the 9th, you've got 2 outs, 2 strikes... (meaningfully) ...and no balls.

    • Rebecca blames the hijinks that caused Wayne to quit on "Sam and his Katzenjammer Kids." Katzenjammer Kids is the world's second oldest comic strip and is about brothers who rebel against authority with their hijinks.
