Sam: You never know. You could die, I could die, the world could end. One of us could bump our heads and wander the streets the rest of our lives with amnesia. Or maybe, one of us will decide we want something else. Diane: None of those things will happen. I'll be back here. I will. I'll see you in six months, OK? (Diane exits Cheers) Sam: Have a good life....
Sam: Hey, have a good life. Diane: Have a good life? Sam: What? Diane: Well, that's something you say when somethings over. Sam, I'm going away for six months. That's all. So no more of this 'Have a good life' stuff.
Sam: I tell you what. You're bad at ballet. You're terrible at acting. You can't draw worth a lick. You're bad at poetry, photography, cinema, and omelets. I mean they're going to have to start inventing things for you to be bad at. Diane: Make your point, Sam. Sam: You're good at writing. I think we finally found something you don't stink at.
Carla: (about Sam and Diane's wedding going off an on) This is inhuman.
Sam: What's up, Norm? Norm: Me about 30 times a night.
Diane: (to Sam) I've waited several years for this marriage and I don't want to wait any longer. I'm starting to get scared. Something always seems to screw us up. Usually it's you. Sometimes it's me.
Sumner: Sam's bludgeoned all the spirit out of you and dragged you back down to his level. Diane: No one was dragged Sumner. Sam and I walked arm and arm to his level.
Sumner: Excuse me, young man. I'm Dr. Sumner Sloane. I'm looking for Diane Chambers. Woody: gee I hope she's not sick. Sumner: No, I'm not a medical doctor. I'm in the literature department at Boston University where I occupy a chair. Woody: Hey don't worry about it. That's all I did in school too.
Diane: I'll be back here, I will. I'll see you in 6 months. Okay? Sam: Okay. Diane: Okay. That's better. (Diane leaves Cheers.) Sam: Have a good life.
Sumner is responsible for leaving Diane at Cheers, and is responsible for taking her away from it, too.
This was the only episode of the 5th season which featured a scene in the poolroom.
This episode is the last regular appearance for Shelley Long as Diane Chambers.(She did appear in "One for the Road")
A fake ending was originally taped before a live studio audience in which Sam and Diane are wed. This was done to hide from the public the fact that Shelley Long was leaving Cheers. However, NBC promoted "I Do, Adieu" heavily as her swan song and made no secret of the fact their leading lady was leaving.
