  • An ensemble piece.

This was one of the first episodes I can remember in which the patrons of the bar are the driving force behind the story, rather than the tension between Sam and Diane, or the story of one particular secondary character. When a man leaves a will bequeathing $100,000 to the people at Cheers, everybody goes mad. What follows reminds you of It's A Mad, Mad World. For once other patrons beside the usual ones get to play a role in the plot.

This is where you realise the show could grow beyond the romantic comedy it was set out to be. As it would become clear in the later seasons, Cheers worked quite well as an ensemble comedy. Good casting, wonderful writing and purposeful direction made that possible. It's a pity that the last act returned to a classic/tired Sam-Diane clash.
