Janice: I shall talk in court at great length about your unreasonable sexual demands. Gareth: What's unreasonable about my sexual demands? Janice: You don't make any.
Gareth: "Next to you, Mark Thatcher looks like Prince Henry the navigator."
Mark Thatcher: Son of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Mark famously got lost competing in an auto race in North Africa. After being missing for several days, he was found unharmed about 30 miles off course.
Prince Henry the Navigator: The son of a Portuguese king, Prince Henry (1394 - 1460) organized numerous voyages down the west coast of Africa, founded Portuguese colonies there, and established a college to teach navigation, astronomy, and cartography. His goal, not achieved until after his death, was to find a complete sea route to the Orient that would bypass the land routes controlled by Muslims.
Gareth: "There are names at Lloyd's, sitting alone in a darkened room with a revolver, who owe less than this."
Lloyd's refers to the famous British insurance firm, Lloyd's of London.
Lloyd's of London was the world's first insurance company, and used a different financial mechanism from normal stock ownership. As a result its investors, known as "names", have potentially unlimited liabilities. At about the time of this show, Lloyd's was experiencing enormous losses, which forced a large number of previously very rich names into huge losses and often bankruptcy.
