  • Gareth is asked to a French, invitation-only competition. He decides to show-off English food and wine, to many folks' disbelief.

I love how this show, based on a classically-trained Frnech cuisine chef, shows it's -and Gareth's- love and pride in his homeland!

The scenes with Alphonse, the French sommalier, are the most humane and respectful Gareth seemed to him the entire series. Yes, Gareth wanted something from Alphonse, but both parties understood, so no loss of face.

Debra and Everton's devotion and stamina were certainly tested, as was Janice's nigh-legendary patience. Her understanding, beyond the Chateau, of what the competition meant to Gareth was subtly and not-so-subtly throughout the episode. Caroline Lee Johnson keeps proving that she was as integral to the show's formula as Gareth or Everton.

Lenny Henry's abilities as an actor, comic or dramatic not mattering a whit, were proven again with the by turns typical then atypical master chef with the sharp wit and acid tongue. We felt Gareth wasn't faking his enthusiasm, fear, relief, surprise, or intensity throughout. The ending also paid off with Mr. Henry's skills as a gifted actor.

It's a fun, sweet valentine to Old Blighty and her much-maligned cuisine. I highly recommend this episode!moreless
