Episode Summary

EDIT
Phillip's religious beliefs and Jeffrey's grief over the death of his son put them on opposite sides of whether to convince a young mother to remove her infant from life support so that her daughter's organs can be donated to save the life of another baby. Karen deflects a flirtation from Jeffrey, but romantic sparks fly between her and Aaron.moreless

This is an extraordinary episode examining the beliefs, priorities, and humanity of several different people about life and death. It avoids the usual cliches and doesn't assign black and white "hats"; it invites reflection through everyone's eyes. Regardless of your viewpoint about artifically extending life, this episode will force you to re-examine your perspective.

The writing is first rate, thoughtful, and complex which expertly weaves the storyline through the characters demons and backgrounds. Jeffery Geiger, who is driven to save the life of his patient at all costs, can't understand why anyone would obstruct him. He is informed by his personal knowledge of the devastion of losing a baby. Phillip Watters, a Catholic, empathizes with the strident mother who will not acknowledge her baby's fate. He's determined to protect her right to keep her baby on life support, regardless of its consequences. It's the irresistable force and the immovable object.

There is also some midnight-black humor and bureaucratic bungling that adds realism and pathos, that is almost painful. This is the type of episode that launched Chicago Hope several notches higher than even excellent TV drama. It is very compelling.moreless

    • Jeffrey: Camille said . . . she said everything I do is really about Joey. My son. She's right, isn't she?
      Aaron: I don't know.
Jeffrey: The McKinnon baby had a purpose. I've asked myself so many times what was Joey's purpose, if a baby's going to only live less than a year. Maybe some babies don't live long enough to serve their purpose. I think I finally understand Joey's.
      Aaron: What was it?
Jeffrey: To allow me to love him. And I did, Aaron. I loved him so much. Too much for God to take him away from me.
      Aaron: I know that.
Jeffrey: I haven't let him go yet. I still can't let him go.
      Aaron: I know that, too.
