Childline originated as a BBC program on child abuse called Childwatch
in 1986. The brainchild of Esther Rantzen, the show gave abused children
the chance to speak to a counselor about their troubles. The result was
the creation of Childline, a 24-hour hotline that allowed abused
children to seek solace from their surroundings. The hotline has several
branches in a number of European and Asian countries. On television,
there are several Childline related concerts and telethons every year,
with the proceeds from those events going to help at-risk children.
