Episode Recap

Jon and Ponch help a gas station owner break up an angry crowd of people needing to fill up; his tanks are dry. Out on the freeway, Getraer and Grossie are patrolling and decide to check out a fuel tanker with a loose mud guard. The gas thieves inside are afraid of getting caught, so they try and dump the gas onto the freeway. The spill causes Getraer to crash.

Getraer is taken to the hospital with minor injuries and a concussion. Meanwhile, the gas thieves remove the fake "NET-OIL" company label on their tanker. At the hospital, Grossie, Ponch and Jon are visiting when Sgt. Chapman from the West L.A. department drops in. He'll be filling in for Getraer while he's in the hospital. Ponch and Chapman begin to argue over Ponch's refereeing an upcoming street hockey game between the kids of Central and West L.A., until the nurse throws them out.

At a gas station across town, the gas thieves, Gary and Slim, are delivering stolen gas. Carl Beasley, the station's owner, gives them grief about being late. Elsewhere, Ponch and Jon arrive at another gas station, where Ponch flirts with an attendant, who is his date later that evening. A man runs up to Jon and tells him that a man siphoned gas out of his car and took off. Jon and Ponch pursue him through town, until he drives his car up a carrier trailer. Jon is surprised by the carrier being parked there, and crashes his motor. Back at Central, Ponch tries to lure Sgt. Chapman into a roller hockey match with West L.A., cops versus cops, but Chapman tells him and Jon to go back to work.

That night at another gas station, Gary and Slim, now with a "Kerico" company logo on their tanker, are delivering stolen gas. Back at Ponch's apartment, he's having his date with the gas station attendant, Beth. He sweet talks his way into being first in line to fill up; Beth tells him to be there at 5:30am. Grossie interrupts to drop off a rule book for roller hockey so Ponch can brush up. At the station seen at the beginning of the episode, Gary and Slim are stealing gas until the station's owner arrives and catches them. Gary attacks the man, and they escape in the tanker.

With the man's description of the tanker, Ponch and Jon patrol the freeways in search of it. After pulling over for a break, a man drives past them, out of control. Open gas cans in the back of his station wagon are releasing fumes that are impairing his driving. He finally drives up a hill off the side of the freeway and stops. Jon and Ponch get him out right before the car explodes.

At briefing the next day, Getraer is present, and after going over key points in finding the gas thieves, Sgt. Chapman taunts Central in regards to the match between the kids. At the kids' game, things seem to be going well until a player on Central's team gets called for high sticking. They lose as a result, and Ponch catches backlash.

The next morning at the gas station, Jon and Ponch are waiting for Beth. Ponch is upset that they came at 5:30am when she doesn't open until 7am. It turns out that Beth told everyone she knows to be at the station at 5:30; she's impartial and gives no one special treatment. Later while on duty, they arrive across from Beasley's gas station and notice that his hours suddenly changed, probably due to not receiving a delivery of stolen gas from the thieves. They decide to keep an eye on it.

Back at Central, Chapman accepts Ponch's challenge to the cops versus cops roller hockey match. Since Ponch can't referee, he's tasked with choosing one. Out on the street, the gas thieves are delivering to Beasley's station, while Cindy watches from across the way, undercover. Beasley pays a price lower than what was agreed upon, since they arrived a day late with the gas. Feeling ripped off, Gary has Slim shut down the line on the tanker and they leave. Cindy arrests Beasley while Jon and Ponch chase the tanker. They wind through city streets until the tanker crashes into a newly painted house. As Jon and Ponch rescue them from the crash, debris from the house injures Ponch's shoulder.

The injury was minor and Ponch is able to play in the roller hockey game. The episode ends as everyone marvels over Ponch's decision for a referee…..his impartial date, Beth.
