Episode Summary

EDIT
Yumi's dad loans Hideki his DVD player, and tells him of a DVD sale coming up. Hoping to get some mature videos, Hideki embarrassingly meets Minoru and Yuzuki instead, who offer him a fantasy multiplayer Internet game (Brave Quest Online) that persocoms can play too. Hideki thinks this would be fun to play with Chi. But Hideki knows nothing about hooking up to the Internet! Fortunately Shinbo helps him out. Now everyone's logged on, except for Chi; she's missing (in the game)! Oh no, what's Hideki going to do now? Blindly run through the game looking for her of course!moreless

Computer game movies are a common theme from as early as Tron to Spy Kids 3D and .hack. In those movies the main character physically travels to the alternate reality and deals with the puzzles therein. But instead of rehashing that idea, Hideki sticks to the newbie gamer's perspective with hilarious results.

The episode starts with Hideki's boss lending him the DVD player so he can watch some adult movies or something - typical guy anime stuff, but after he meets with Minoru at the store, he gets the online gaming bug.

This episode captures his newbie interactions perfectly, starting with the installation. Call up your friends, eventually getting them to come over and do it for you. Hideki's also shocked by his friends' choices of characters: Minoru picks a super-sized Sumomo, while Shimbo picks none other than Ms. Shimizu. Hideki really gets into the role-playing, while Minoru and Shimbo oblige in their usual friendly composure. And of course Chi's just happy to play along too.

Then once online, Hideki finds out he isn't even on the same network as Chi, and does what he does best: panic and run around in circles like his foot's stapled to the floor (an old joke). These gags, along with rolling on the floor, are the ones I remember best from the series. The game simulated world itself with its graphics are not impressive, nor was it meant to be. It's kind of typical RPG'ish with the health bar and on par with online graphical RPG's at that time.

And sleeping-in during class the next days; who can't relate to that? I'm surprised Shimbo and Hideki didn't fail right then and there, but that's cram school for you. Fortunately the whole game and DVD thing was just a rental phase; I wish I could say the same for us ongoing computer addicts.moreless
