City Hunter

Show Summary

If you're desperate and need a job done, write "XYZ" on the bulletin board at Shinjuku Station. That is a signal that you want to hire City Hunter. Ryo Saeba and Kaori Makumura make up City Hunter. Ryo is calm, cool, and an amazingly accurate shot. He is also the biggest lech since Ataru Moroboshi. Kaori is the "sister" (no blood relation, she was adopted) of Ryo's deceased partner and runs the business side of City Hunter. This story is very funny due to the face that it contains perverted jokes and elements. I don't know how they managed to keep everything at a G level. I highly recommend this series. This series is best watched in the original Japanese with English subtitles, it is very interesting to hear the voice actors stretch their voices to the limit on this one. Another thing to look for is the soundtrack, the music used in this series is worth a listen, even if you don't understand Japanese. Ryo Saeba - No one, even Ryo himself, knows who he really is. Orphaned at the age of three in a plane crash in South America, he was adopted by a group of mercenaries and became a mercenary himself. (As a result, even Ryo does not know when his real birthday is.) In fact, he is one of the best. His abilities include successive one-hole shots from ten metres, ultra sensitive hearing (he can hear a gun cock from far away), and the ability to shoot a person, while missing all the vital organs. Despite this, his main weakness is women. In fact, he is one of the most PERVERTED people in animation. Yet even through all of this, women still manage to fall for him after getting to know him better (no, not that way....). The one woman he truly loves however, is Kaori Makimura, but he refrains from expressing his love for fear that it would jeopardize her life. So he goes on in his merry Mokkori ways.... Hideyuki Makimura - As the series starts, Hideyuki is Ryo's partner in the business. A former police officer, he left the force after certain situations rendered him helpless to assist innocent civilians (like those who would call XYZ for their services). He is soon killed by a drug cartel for refusing to commit to their nefarious plans. Kaori Makimura - According to Kaori, she is Hideyuki's younger sister. According to Hideyuki, Kaori was adopted as an infant, the child of a murderer killed by police. After Hideyuki's death, she takes over his duties as Ryo's partner. Unlike Hideyuki, however, if Ryo tries to get too close to his beautiful female clients, Kaori will protect them by smashing Ryo's head in with a 100 ton mallet. Kaori herself is also attracted by Ryo's charms and character, but because of Ryo's lecherousness, she keeps her feelings to herself. Kaori's main peeve is being seen as a man by not only women, but Ryo himself. It seems that Kaori's true goal with Ryo is to be seen as attractive while invoking jealousy and perhaps even love in him. Hayato Ijuin AKA Umibozu AKA Falcon - Like Ryo, he was a mercenary in South America and also works as a sweeper in Shinjuku. This gigantic man is known for his awesome strength, and his ability to take a licking and keep on ticking. Whereas Ryo tends to solve a problem through cunning and guile, Umibozu tends to solve a problem using a blunt force approach: with a bazooka in one hand, and a machine gun in the other. Umibozu's greatest weakness is cats, including cute kittens, he loses all his strength at the sound of a cat's meow. Strangely enough, cats are very attracted to him, and his life partner Miki owns a shop called the "Cat's Eye". To some of his former enemies and comrades (including Miki), he is known as "Falcon". Saeko Nogami - A detective with the Tokyo Police department, Saeko is Hideyuki's former partner in the force, and is a good acquaintance of Ryo. She is also a great manipulator of men. Whenever she is in a tight spot with a case, she calls Ryo to assist her in completing her mission with the promise that she will sleep with him. Of course, she is always able to duck out of it in the end, so Ryo keeps a record of how many times Saeko "owes" him. Reika Nogami - Saeko's younger sister, Reika, like Ryo, works in the private sector and is also a former police officer. Like her older sister, she is also a great manipulator of men. Therefore, all her clients are typically male. If she needs Ryo to help her in a tight spot, she does not ask him outright, but rather use him as fodder for her protection. Unlike her sister though, Reika is TOTALLY attracted to Ryo and strives to be his partner in life and crime one day, much to the jealousy of Kaori. Miki - Umibozu's Partner. As a young man in his mercenary years, Umibozu found Miki as an 8 year old orphan. He then took her under his wing and taught her all the skills she would need to survive. However, several years later, Miki began showing affection towards Umibozu, so he ran away from her. Miki spent the next few years looking for Umibozu and when she finally did, she would become his life partner. Miki is the only girl in the series who does not display any attraction to Ryo Saeba whatsoever. Kasumi Aso - Also known as Phantom 305, she enlisted Ryo's help in getting a black rose back from a corrupt psychic. Later in the series, she enlists his help in breaking an arranged marriage to someone she detested. But in doing so, the head of the clan discovered that her heart had been "stolen" by Ryo. Kasumi was then forbidden to return home until she "stole" Ryo's heart. Kasumi thus works as a waitress at the Cat's Eye and becomes a recurring member of the cast. In 2005, the long awaited sequel to City Hunter, "Angel Heart" premiered on Japanese Television. "Angel Heart" portrays a darker side of City Hunter, one that includes the loss of one of City Hunter's most revered characters......

  • One of the better anime series.

    10
This show began with a movie-length feature that ranks among the best action-adventure animes ever done. Indeed, it should have appeal even to those who aren't normally interested in animation. There are only people, no robots, and the detective story outranks for excitement anything the James Bond movies have done in years. The follow-up episodes have a certain campy sense of humor which crops up now and then, and which I could do without, but other than that, flaws are few and far between. Mystery, courage, really great suits--"City Hunter" offers much to treat the eye, as well as the brain. Too many anime productions cater to only one or the other. Thank goodness for the rarity that fires on all cylinders.moreless
  • This show made me laugh often.

    7.5
Simply put this show was funny. Ryo the lead male character being this dashing, charming figure that couldn't not miss with his .357 magnum even you were to cut out his eyes. Yet, let nearly any female go by and suddenly, he turns into the most lecherous, prat falling, idiot you have ever seen. It was just out right funny. The series had some good action sequences but they were more of a second thought to the comedy. Also, the parts of the show between the action and the comedy could drag a bit. Plotlines weren't important either, it was the same every show: Bad guy threatens something, pretty girl hires Ryo, Ryo tries to make it with the pretty girl, Kaori (Ryo's female partner) pulls her multi ton hammer from hell --or some other ridiculously large item from thin air-- and clubs Ryo with it, bad guy captures pretty girl and/or Kaori, Ryo saves day but loses pretty girl. One of the strongest points of the show was it's music. The music was spot on most of the time. I have several of the sound tracks. TM Network did a lot of the music. Bottom line, if you a little action mixed with lots of slapstick humor then you can't go wrong with this show. If however, you like less comedy and either more plot or action then move on to something else and leave this one alone.moreless
