Well after almost a year of anticipation New Zealand's answer to Melrose Place debuted in July 1996 and it did not dissapoint! Well for me anyways. The newspapers at the time took note of the massive drop in viewers that occured after the show's first scene in which Damon (played by guest star the late Kevin Smith, who at the time was one of New Zealand's hottest stars) shared a kiss with Ryan. Yikes! Today I bet people wouldn't even blink an eye what with the civil union that occured on Shortland Street last year. Anyways, I digress. This episode was throughly entertaining.

Using a death to kick things off (a tried and true soap opera start that City Life shares with Emmerdale and Another World), the aforementioned Damon is bumped off courtesy of a car driven by Angela. Not only that but it was his wedding day too! This event serves to bring all the main characters together and under the same roof as Damon has willed them each a share in the apartment block that he owns. However lest you think that life will be easy for the gang, they have the problem of Damon's manipulative fiancee Rebekah to deal with played by the excellent Miranda Harcourt (she, having cut her teeth playing another nasty bad girl on another New Zealand sudser Gloss back in the 80s).

Its also entertaining to see Lisa Chappell (who was already quite well known in New Zealand at this time), Claudia Black and Laurie Foell in earlier roles.moreless
