City Lights

Show Summary

City Lights is a Scottish television sitcom made by BBC Scotland and set in Glasgow. It starred Gerard Kelly as Willie Melvin, a bank-teller at the fictional Strathclyde Savings Bank (whose logo was very similar to the TSB), with dreams of becoming a novelist. Most of the plots revolved around his attempts to get his book, the autobiographical My Life Up A Close, published causing him no end of problems. His acquaintances also suffer, with friend and co worker Brian, boss Mr McLelland, and Chancer, a dodgy sort who spends some time in jail (between series one and two). Willie also has a couple of romances during the series, most notably with Janice, whom he almost marries. By the end of the run, however, he is courting Fiona. Writer Bob Black had served his apprenticeship on BBC Scotland sketch shows A Kick Up The Eighties and Naked Video before creating this successful and durable Scottish sitcom; Willie's home in the series was Black's own flat.moreless
