Show Summary

Civil Wars centered around the divorce attorneys Sidney Guilford and Charlie Howell and the cases they took on... This show was a fine effort from Steven Bochco. Everything about the show was first rate: music, photography, sets, writing, guest-stars, and the series leads. The single best thing about the show was the character of Eli Levinson (played by Alan Rosenberg). The character was beautifully written and played. The other leads, Peter Onorati and Mariel Hemingway, were also superb. Wednesday night used to be my favorite TV night because of "Seinfeld", "Mad About You", and this show. All three shows had ratings problems. The other two shows survived on different nights.moreless

  • A terrific series done in by a poor timeslot and even worse promotion.

    "Superb"
This show had everything going for it except lousy promotion. It was a top-notch Steven Bochco production, well-written, well-cast, and well-played. The sexual tension between leading characters played by Mariel Hemingway and Peter Onorati was balanced by the easy chemistry between Alan Rosenberg's "Eli" and Debi Mazur's "Denise," his secretary. These two supporting characters were so special together that they were exported to "LA Law" when "Civil Wars" met its early, disappointing end. "Eli" and "Denise" enlivened the final episodes of the slowly dying "LA Law" just as they electrified "Civil Wars." Bochco has had some mis-fires in his career ("Cop Rock," anyone?), but this series does not deserve to be among them.moreless
