This show had everything going for it except lousy promotion. It was a top-notch Steven Bochco production, well-written, well-cast, and well-played. The sexual tension between leading characters played by Mariel Hemingway and Peter Onorati was balanced by the easy chemistry between Alan Rosenberg's "Eli" and Debi Mazur's "Denise," his secretary. These two supporting characters were so special together that they were exported to "LA Law" when "Civil Wars" met its early, disappointing end. "Eli" and "Denise" enlivened the final episodes of the slowly dying "LA Law" just as they electrified "Civil Wars." Bochco has had some mis-fires in his career ("Cop Rock," anyone?), but this series does not deserve to be among them.
