Mr. Howard is raking leaves, when Clifford and Emily Elizabeth come. Clifford jumps in one of the piles of leaves, messing it up. Fortunately, Mr. Howard's a nice guy, so he doesn't mind too much. Emily Elizabeth's excited, as her class is putting on a play. It's "Jane and the Beanstalk" and she's going to try out for the role of Jane. She's been working hard, learning all of the lines. She enlists Charley and the dogs Clifford, Cleo and T-Bone to help her out. Charley's the man who gives her the beans. Cleo is the goose who laid the golden eggs, T-Bone is her cow and she gives Clifford the role of the big, mean giant. Clifford has trouble with the role, as he's big, but he's certainly not mean. He keeps crying during the sad parts. Still, with everyone's help, Emily Elizabeth is able to practice. The next day, Emily Elizabeth arrives home again. She tells Mr. Howard that she didn't get the role of Jane. That went to Jetta, who Ms. Carrington said "has a natural flair for drama." She did, however, get the role of Jane's mother and she also gets to help with decorating the stage. As we see, however, Jetta maybe isn't such a good choice to the role. She stops by Emily Elizabeth's and Emily Elizabeth asks her if she wants to practice her lines. Jetta, however, seems more interested in getting her hair done and getting dressed up. Later, when everyone's getting ready setting up the stage, Jetta practices her bowing. Ms. Carrington suggests that she should be practicing her lines, but Jetta says that she has plenty of time and she'll do it later. Then, time comes for the play. Jetta panics out. She tries to make excuses as to why the play can't go on and then is finally forced to admit that she doesn't know her lines. Emily Elizabeth, however, does and so she takes over the role of Jane. Clifford's tail serves as a beanstalk, as they forgot to design one for the play. Emily Elizabeth does a good job in the role of Jane, but she thinks that Clifford was the real star.

"An Itchy Patch"
Clifford is having a serious itching problem. He scratches against a tree at the library and then holds up traffic, trying to scratch against a traffic light. He also scratches against a mail truck. When he comes home, Emily Elizabeth and Mr. Howard can't help but notice him scratching. Emily Elizabeth says that if he keeps scratching like that, they may just have to take him to the new vet in town. Clifford doesn't like the sound of that. Clifford meets up with Cleo and T-Bone at the beach. However, he can't really play, as he just keeps scratching. He tells Cleo and T-Bone that he has a bad itch and mentions that Emily Elizabeth said that she might take him to the vet if he keeps scratching. Cleo doesn't like this idea. She heard that the vet is friends with the groomer and she dislikes the groomer, a lot. She has a plan though: as long as Emily Elizabeth doesn't see Clifford scratching, he'll be fine. So he just has to keep it under control. This, however, is easier said than done. When Emily Elizabeth takes Clifford to the library, he breaks down and starts scratching on the grass. However, Cleo and T-Bone cover it up, by making it look like they were playing. Later, Emily Elizabeth and Mr. Howard are having lunch at the docks. Emily Elizabeth comments that she hasn't seen Clifford scratch all day. Outside, Cleo and T-Bone are busy scratching Clifford's back, trying to keep the itching under control. But they get tired and stop for a break. Clifford can't stop himself and makes a dash for the water for a good scratch. Mr. Howard and Emily Elizabeth see him and chase after him. Emily Elizabeth decides that it's time to take him to the vet. So Clifford goes to the vet, while T-Bone and Cleo watch from an overlooking hill. The vet's name is Dr. Dihn and she's quite nice. She diagnoses Clifford as having a rash and prescribes some cream to clear it up. Cleo and T-Bone see that the cream has relieved Clifford's itching and release that the vet isn't so bad after all. At home, Emily Elizabeth tells Clifford that she understands about him being afraid to go to the vet at first. After all, she was afraid the first time she went to the doctor. But she's glad they did go to the vet and Clifford is too.moreless
The problems with the play in "Clifford and the Beanstalk" could have been prevented if the class had held a dress rehearsal, which is standard practice for such plays.
It seems rather unbelievable that Jetta managed to snag the role of Jane in the auditions for the "Jane and the Beanstalk" play, considering that she apparently didn't really know any of the lines.
T-Bone: I think he likes it, Cleo. Cleo: His tail sure seems happy.
Cleo: What's going on down there?! What are they doing to him?! T-Bone: (calmly) Gee, Cleo. Maybe they're just stopping his itch.
Cleo: Poor Clifford. Down at the vet's office. All alone. T-Bone: He's not alone. He's with Emily! And Emily would never let anyone hurt Clifford!
Emily Elizabeth: Clifford! Mr. Howard: Please stop scratching. You're causing a tidal wave.
Cleo: What's with the itching, big guy? Clifford: Sorry, but I have this itchy patch and I just can't stop scratching.
Ms. Lee: He's using that tree to scratch a very big itch. Samuel: What other kind of itch would Clifford have?
Emily Elizabeth: I think the real star of the play was Clifford, the big, red beanstalk.
Ms. Carrington: Okay, is everyone where what they're supposed to be and wearing what they're supposed to be? Students: Huh? Huh? Huh?
Jetta: I'll learn my lines in time for the play. I promise.
Ms. Carrington: Uh, Jetta. What are you doing? Jetta: Well, when you're lead in a play, Ms. Carrington, you have to know how to bow, so I'm practicing my bowing. Ms. Carrington: Shouldn't you be practicing your lines?
Emily Elizabeth: I didn't get the part of Jane. Jetta did. Ms. Carrington said she has a "natural flair for drama."
Clifford: (cries) Charley: It's only pretend, Clifford. And your'e supposed to be mean, remember? Clifford: (growls weakly)
Mr. Howard: No, Clifford! Don't... worry about landing in my pile of leaves.
