      • While Howard is describing his nightly routine, he says that he and Shirley still always stay up for "Johnny." Hayden informs him that it's "Jay Leno." They are referring to NBC's The Tonight Show. Johnny Carson was the show's host from 1962 until 1992 when he retired and was replaced by Jay Leno. When this episode aired, Leno had been host for about a year and a half.

      • Shirley named her new dessert "Sandra Day O'Cobbler." This alludes to the U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. In 1981, O'Connor was the first woman ever appointed to the Court. She served until 2005.
