  • A story of forbidden love set in the prohibition era.

    9.0
    "Superb"
I think this is one of my favorite episodes of cold case. The story is that of forbidden love between two women, one white one black that takes place during the prohibition. This Cold Case so it doesn't end well. Lilly and Co find a car long sunk into the river. They find a body inside and soon are immersed in a mystery of forbidden love when they track the car back to a a young man who sold booze to the local black clubs. They later discover that his sister might have been the one in the car when they find out she disappeared on him after a fight but soon after find out things aren't that simple. It wasn't her the car. The truth is far more complicated, and far more tragic.

The episode is at its tragic best and has one of the most classic lines I have ever heard on it. Rose: "I wonder if it was wrong, the feelings I had for her."

Lilly "No it was just the wrong time."

This is my favorite episode of all, when I saw it...

A find amazing the capacity of expressing her feelings like she did, the poems are from the heart.

They wanted to be together, they were in love in a time that wasn't ready for it.

    The beginning:

Sent that girl away a night ago,

and don't she know it's been ashes

    Sent her away and

    don't she know it ache

Heart of mine, throat of smoke,

I sent a girl away and

    it's been hell opened up,

    working on my skin

    till it be bone.

    The loving:

Those three words I have never heard together,

before you made them in your mouth,

chewed them soft like sugar cane,

    polished them with your tongue,

gave them to me sweet, and I swore I'd never get them lost.

Is it how I can't find sleep, or get fed, this thing you said?

Is it how my heart grows at the sight of you?

    Then, baby, yes,

    I love you, too.

    The fighting:

    "My body broken"

    Tired, nickel-colored night

You can take my blood and keep it,

I ain't need it no more,

use my broken teeth to pave your street,

my splintered bones stomped for sand,

if this lead-footed man should once again leave me dead,

    my body broken,

my soul would find a way,

oh, night, to dance with his girl again.

And the lost of a loved one:

I came up from the dark without you

and every day has been in shadow.

I have begged the tide to wash away my sin

and take me to you in the dark

but every day I surface again.

but in the spring, I am betrayed by the new earth

with you in my heart, I am born again a green bud,

    I am born again blooming.

I saw this episode the first night it aired and it has stayed with me ever since. The story was fantastic and kept you guessing. I loved the flashbacks going back to the 30's. The story is something that we can still relate to in this day and age, but it also really makes you think about how hard life was for certain people back then. Being gay african american, or part of an interracial couple. The poetry really helped set the mood and along with the music, took you back to another time. Amazing episode. I give it a 10 out of 10.

Loved the episode! From the interesting and well-written story line, to the amazing poetry, and talented actresses, this movie left me feeling both happy and unbelievably sad. Tessa Thompson did a wonderful job; it really showed her versatility and authenticity as an actress. It was a romantic story that wasn't mushy or unrealistic; it was well-paced and, although the situation was a little far-fetched, it had a definitive authenticity to it. Also, maybe I'm being a little dense, but did Rose and Billy plan to commit suicide, or did Billy die accidentally? The ending seemed a little disappointing if they committed suicide, but I guess it did add to the emotion of the episode.
  • After finding a 1932 car in the Delaware River, the team opens it's case to investigate who's body is in the car and how it got that way.

After a drag of the last two episodes, this one really hit me hard. It was just a terrific episode in all aspects. The characters were great (both past and present) and it takes you quite deep into these people's lifes enough to care in the end.

It's always the loved lost stories that seem to be the saddest ad this one was no different. It's about a love that begin in exactly the wrong time and wrong place.

I thought the story was written quite well to explain everything that led up to the body in the car in the river. Much like most of this series, it started out with the very beginning of what was to be the end of this young girl's life.

It was also nice to see how much things have changed from 1932 to now. Both with the characters and society at large. The writing was fantastic in the sense that it made me feel like these two women really loved each other and it was quite sad to see one of them go and one of them stay.

This is an episode that definitely should not be passed up!

I'm not a crier. NOt by any means but this episode really touched me. It was so sad to see their love be so beautiful but so restricted by the times. It was prohibited because they were lesbians and because they were interracial. I cried through the poems and at the end because they felt so trapped and like there was no way out. The really sad part is that if they would've gone to New York, it might've not been that much better but they would have at least been away from Rose's brother. On a personal note: I can see why Rose loved Billie because I truly fell in love with her last night too. :)

For some reason I was really moved by this episode. Having seen this episode now for a couple more times I decided I had to write what I thought. I think the music and the well written script in flash backs probaly had a lot to do with it. In this episode I can see so many of the old attitudes that have torn people apart for years. I would love to say that we have surpassed these ways but alas we have not. One thing it does show is that love takes on many forms and does not come to everyone the same way. Each person has to find what is love for themselves and when you find it there may indeed be sacrifices that have to be made to protect it. The poems in the story weren't perfect but they were profound. I felt a tear or two as I watched the end of this episode for the first time. Although I may not have agreed with the solution (driving off the end of the road). I know we often make split second decisons we regret. I can't imagine how it would feel to live after making that decisions or how I might have felt if I were Billy and I ever realized what happened; that I was left alone. How sad it is to have to wait forever for any hope of ever seeing that loved one again. I love this show for the episodes that really make you think; like this one.

Such a touching episode of cold case. The storyline was so wondefully written out and the actors played it with real emotion. You could feel the love that existed between the two women. You felt for them and you cry for them. Simply amazing. Cold case is not afraid to break barriers and go against the grain. This episode, in my opinion, is one of the best of the series. My favorite part in the episode was when Rosie asks Lily if the love they had was wrong and Lily replies \"No... it was just.. the wrong time.\"

We have to remember that love.. is love.
  • Tragic and Telling

This episode of Cold Case stuck with me. It seems sad these days to see this tale of race, sexuality and prejudice but back when this episode is set, 1932 mixed-race couples and homosexuality were looked down upon. This episode shows how much more tolerance there is today.

As well as being an excellant story it was handled by the actors with great sensitvity, the attraction of Billie and Rose was played out tastefully and with clarity showing that shock isn\'t always needed to make a point, and to make the viewers care about the characters involved.

I hope there are more Episodes of this quality.

This is one of my favourites, a lovely well-written story of Rose and Billie, wonderful characters and a great feeling of the 30's era, the poetry in it was simple and sad, a lovely touch at the end when Billie came and walked away with Rose who was now in her 80's. Just a great story and yes I cried too.
  • Very interesting story about sexual minorities from some decades ago.

The team investigates the case of a body found in a car in the bottom of a river. The story behind that particular body and how it got to be in the river is very interesting. The body belonged to a young woman who liked to dress like a boy - or like a fox as she said herself. What makes her story a bit unconventional is the fact that she had a girlfriend - she was a lesbian. Back in her days that was a big deal and something that was generally considered to be a sin. Surprisingly she wasn't actually killed by some homophobic citizen. Instead the episode has a lot more interesting story line for her. Very interesting and romantic.
  • This is the team's oldest case yet, a death during the Prohibition era. First found in the depths of a river, the body pulls them into the fantastic world of speak-easies and bootlegging, poetry and the forbidden love between a white girl and a black girl

My favorite Cold Case episode ever, this one broke my heart. The tentative yet beautifully loving relationship between Billie and Rose during the harsh and crazy Prohibition era captured my attention like no other episode. It was further captured by Billie's poetry, and Rose's last attempt to hold onto the girl she loved through her own writing.
  • Beautiful. Passionate. Fantastic.
