Nitpick: Lt. John Stillman says that they'll know the exact year of the 1930's truck after they match up the plates and the VIN number. VIN numbers weren't introduced until the 1953 Corvette.

It's of course true that the police weren't as skilled and didn't have the same forensics techniques in 1932 as they do nowadays. Nevertheless, somebody should have noticed that a huge chunk of a guard rail was missing from the side of a bridge in the spot where the girls drove the truck into the river.
