The term 'black widow' is a reference to the black widow spider. The female of the species kills the male mate after he is of no use to her. Calling a widow a 'black widow' is basically blaming them for the death of their spouse in order to gain their wealth.

Siegfried and Roy
Another poker slang term in this episode, Siegfried and Roy a.k.a. "Two Queens", refers to the famous flamboyant Vegas animal act duo and their supposed homosexuality.

When Grant's case file is being archived in the beginning of the episode, a detective is reading a newspaper story headlined "Olympic Agony". The 1984 Summer Olympics were held in Los Angeles. The games were boycotted by a host of communist countries, including the Soviet Union, other Eastern Bloc countries and Cuba, as a retaliation of the U.S.-led boycott of the previous Olympics in Moscow in 1980.

In Texas Hold'em poker, which the characters are playing in this episode, the river is the last card dealt on the board face up. The entire episode is filled with poker jargon and "the river" used as a metaphor for a last chance of your luck -- and life -- turning.

Cy Tisdale: Ace king. Looks good, but never wins.
This is an unflattering reference to Russian-born tennis player Anna Kournikova. Her "blonde bombshell" looks have earned her plenty of endorsements, but she's never won a major tournament.

Will Jeffries folds a yellow origami crane at his desk. Origami (Japanese for "folding paper") is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding. Cranes like the one Jeffries made are associated with luck and good health.
