  • Cold Case marks its 100th episode with the investigation of the murder of a suburban housewife on October 30, 1938. Coincidentally, the night of the infamous War of the Worlds radio broadcast starring Orson Welles.

Being a fan of Orson Welles' excellent War of the Worlds radio broadcast, I did like this episode to a certain degree because it was neat listening to exceprts from the radio show. However, the loopholes in the plot are a major problem. They have been pretty much pointed out by other reviewers of this episode. The age of the characters from 1938 in the present day is one such flaw. John Finn's character vividly recalling the events of that day is a problem as well. That would make him close to 80. This episode misses the mark completely.

  • Very poor indeed.

Where to start. First there was no mass panic about the broadcast of the War of the Worlds, it's an urban myth, largely spread by Orson Wells himself. [A little research by the writers would have uncovered this.] As stated by other contributers the ages of the actors was laughable - they should have been nearly 100.

So this women leaves her SON and husband (when she thinks the worlds's going to end), to be with a man who lied about his wife being dead. Little tramp, I think if I had been the husband I would have been mightly P.O. as well.

This show is normally excellent but this was laugh out loud appalling.
  • This was interesting but there is something, one line that really bothers me.

I always enjoy this show and the way it revisits the past and makes people review all the mistakes that they made long ago. Its use of music is astonishing and adds to the magic of the hour. They focus us on times long ago and the moments that make us all human. The depression was a time when pride went out the window and good people fell into the greatest despair imaginable. In ordinary times they would have known it was just a radio play but in those dark hours with news of Hitler invading Poland flashing into their minds all they could do was panic. However, one question needs to be asked How old is Lt. John Stillman? He says that he and his wife raced home to be with the kids... come on that would make him well over 80. Even as naive as I am I can not buy that.
  • An interesting story line, but with a serious flaw.

As the story developed, I started doing the math. I was born in 1939, which makes me 68 years old. This story begins in 1938, with the college graduate, middle class father of an 8 year old son. According to my (old, decrepit, and befuddled) calculations, the adult 1938 characters would probably range in age from 22 (young taxi dancer) to 32 (Dauber's father.) Fast forward to 2007, and you have people who's ages are 91 to 101. None of the characters appeared, even close to those ages. Even Dauber would have been 77. While it is possible that one or two of them could have aged "gracefully," it is very unlikely that all would.
  • I really enjoy the Cold Case episodes that go father back in time including this episode.

While I love almost all Cold Case episodes I really love the ones that take place several decades ago rather than ones from the last 20 years or so. When the show puts together music, costumes, sets, etc that really show a time period over 50 years so realistically I think that is when the show really shines. Now while I do agree that the chances of most of the people fetured in this episode still being alive is slim I still really enjoyed it. Also, 1938 was not 80 years ago it was 69 years ago unlike stated in other reviews but still the son looked much younger than 77.
  • Martians are invading!!

Seen the titles of others review, I don't think that this one was that bad, I enjoyed seeing it.

I don't see just the case alone, I look at the characters reactions, those looks that tell more that every word.

For example, the look on Niki's face when he saw Toni at the hospital, their reaction. Those things tell a lot about someone. And after Will Paige finished his story, the first thing that came to Niki's mind was Toni, she is the person with who he choose to be. The declaration, the way he left and her look...

All those things have life too, it's not only the case, the victim, the killer. It's all this together that make me love this show.

That last dance, there are those moments that count the most, the moments after the case. After a job well done.
  • love show but, hate to see them walk an old man(very sick at that)out of his home for him to spend the rest of his life in prision. Mentally he had already been sentenced to death. Get away from "the sweet old man or woman" being carted off to jail.

Again, I say love they show but hate to see it always being the sweet old lady or man carted off to jail. It is just not a vision that I, as an adult with crippled grandparents, can bear to continue to watch. They tricked the killer by the blonde acting as his wife because the old man had alhemizers. I think this was a low, low move for the show. I understand we all have "visions" of killers. This man was not a threat to society. His mental state had already given him his death sentence. Not a good show.
  • Can you remember what you got for Christmas 5 years ago? No. So how do all these guys remember everything from 70 years ago?

I do not mind Cold Case. Generally what bugs me is the tired old formula it uses, where one suspect reveals something that happened which leads the investigation to a different suspect, and it keeps going round and round like a big wheel, until it ends up on the killer at about the 55 minute mark of the episode. What bugged me about this episode is how cast iron these people's memories were from 69 years ago. If I was 8 in 1938 I would not remember a thing. And as a previous reviewer stated, everyone who was older than 20 must have been older than 89. That family's son was eight years old, which makes the parents at the very least around 28 in 1938. That is 97 years of age in 2007.

Going past all these inaccuracies, Cold Case is still good value but a little more believability would not go astray.
  • Did anyone do the math here? It was eighty years ago! I love this show but this time they pushed the envelope too far.

It would be amazing enough to have all these people still alive (and living in the same city) but the death happened almost eighty years ago. The only one who might be alive would be the son. He did not look 88. Everyone else would be over 100. The whole concept was very good and if they had just changed the date of the broadcast that might have been bad history but it would make more sense than all those 100+ year old live people. I think they should keep the deaths under 50 years. They seem better when they are ten to twenty years in the past. The most fun part of this show is seeing how much the older and newer people look like each other. It's usually quite amazing.
  • 100th Episode of Cold Case!

    9.1
    "Superb"
Really good episode as they celebrated the 100th episode of Cold Case in which shows are usually available for syndication. As the show took back in the thirties as a thought of long forgotten case where a young woman went missing in the night of Olsen Wells "War of the Worlds" broadcast two years before WWII started. As it shows you that you shouldn't forget long forgotten, well, almost forgotten cases. When I hate it that the now older man that commited her murder would now die in prison. If you ask me, I think he should had died since he was very sick, at his home. Here's to 100 more episodes of Cold Case! As we hope that we do see!
  • A fine episode

This episode was about someone who was coincidently strangled on the night of the "War of the Worlds" broadcast in October of 1938. This was a pretty good episode (hard to find a bad one!). Since it was raking place it 1938, it was kinda hard for me to relate to it, which made it not as good to me. I mean, I know some about the War of the World broadcast, but taxi dancing and all the other stuff? Anyways, I thought it was okay.... like it wasn't bad or anything, sooooo.... It just not my favorite one. Always next week.
  • not that good...

The team investigates the death of a woman that died fifty years ago. Everyone thought that she just diappeared and left, but no, she died. There was a hoax on the radio about a mars invasion and everyone believed it. I didn't really like the story. I never really like the NCIS stories when they go way back. I just don't like how they catch really old killers. It just doesn't seem right. They killed someone some-odd years ago and they changed and they're old and then they get caught and go to jail. It just doesn't work for me. Besides, the oldsie stuff doesn't interest me. Oh well, overall, not a good episode.
