The case this episode focuses on a boy who has to decide who he is and who he wants to be. The struggle for identity is a common theme for young adults. It's just to bad the kid was murdered before he got to live his life. He was lucky that he found out he wasn't a criminal. He wanted more for himself.
It's even sadder that his jealous half brother killed him, when he was coming back for him. The flying bird at the end, while cliché, was very moving.
