  • Why is Colonel March so interested in a man who keeps on winning at a French casino?

The explanation of the title is modestly interesting, but this is a very so-so mystery story, reminiscent of British B-features of the period. Other stories in the series are more representative of the ingenuity of original author John Dickson Carr. What makes this watchable nowadays is simply the professionalism of the cast - that, and the sheer nostalgia value. It's a pleasure to see Boris Karloff being so sprightly, whilst Arthur Hill, very little-known at the time, seems positively youthful. The presences of Anton Diffring and Eric Pohlmann conjure up a time long past, an era when British films always seemed to cast the same actors when sinister or enigmatic foreigners were required.moreless
