I read on some site that Columbo's first name is Frank. It was strange to me because, as any Columbo fan knows, he never told his first name in the show. Do you know anything about this? Is it just a myth, or the producers really wanted at some time to name him?

it's showed on his badge on "Dead weight" season 1. it's there all right, but I don't know if the producers stuck with it, or if it was just a prop name for the badge

Wikipedia has a very good quality picture of the badge.  It does indeed say Frank.

I thought Colombo's first name was Philip. It is mentioned in only two episodes, I believe.

Ya his name is Frank, for sure, without a doubt! Although the producers won't admit it!

Why would the producers conceal something like that?

It's a running gag. Just like his wife's name is Mrs. Columbo. Faye Dunaway's character in "It's all in the game" asked him what is his first name. He replied 'Lieutenant'.

What do you imagine his name is or what did you always think Columbo's first name should be? I try to put a name to him and nothing seems to fit. Joseph (Joe) Columbo, Anthony (Tony)? I guess Frank works but I wonder if there's a perfect name for him that would really work.

Maybe his name is Lou... Lou Tenant Columbo :-)

I just saw that episode "Dead Weight"! You're right, it's there! Frank Columbo. I think his name should just be Columbo, kind of like Madonna or Cher.

I thought Colombo's first name was Philip. It is mentioned in only two episodes, I believe.

The myth that his name was Phillip came from a lawsuit brought against the creators of Trivial Pursuit by a guy who had written several books called Super Trivia which the makers of Trivial Pursuit plagerised tons of their questions from. In the court case it was revealed that the guy who wrote the Super Trivia books purposely fabricated Columbo's first name so he could spot the people who were copying his books. Since no one knew Columbo's name they finally had to admit that they stole the info from his book because since he was the one who made it up his book was the only possible source for that information..

It's like the situation in Gilligan's Island. Gilligan's first name was never mentioned in the series, though it has since become generally understood that it was Willie (or Willy).

I don't know what Columbo's first name was, but I think Joe Colombo would sound right. Giuseppe Columbo?

I just went to Wikipedia to see the picture. I can't believe it. Right there in black and white, plain as the nose on my face, it says "Frank Columbo". Could this be a photo shop trick? I am quite sure that Columbo's first name was never spoken in any episode. Just goes to show you. Sharpo
