There were so many great actors who guest starred on Columbo as killers, but there were also a lot of great TV and film actors in the 60s and 70s who would have been perfect on the show. I was thinking about some of the actors and actresses of the era who would have made good Columbo villains, going toe to toe with Peter Falk. Here are some of my picks:

    Darren McGavin

    James Garner

    Bill Cosby

    David Jannsen

    Angela Lansbury

Anyone else have anybody they'd like to have seen on Columbo?

Darren McGavin - GOD that would have rocked. Only problem "might" have been McGavin might have come across as more strong than even Columbo, but then again that was never really a problem with this show, as Falk could always 'step it up' when he needed to - just witness "A Stitch In Crime".

Forgot one...Telly Savalas. I think he would have been a great smooth, calculating villain, like Patrick McGoohan or Robert Culp.

I would have liked to have seen Peter Graves play a murderer.I think with Graves being in such a popular show like Mission Impossible, he and Columbo would have been a great pairing.

How about Robert Stack, Jack Lord, or Jack Webb?  Wouldn't it have been fun to see Eliot Ness, Steve McGarrett, or Joe Friday playing a villain?

Great ideas Mad_Buck. Along those same lines, how about James Garner? Along different lines, Anthony Hopkins would probably have been great as a Columbo-type killer, back toward the beginning of the series.

I think a woman for sure, Angie Dickinson. She would have been perfect for seducing and then killing.

Another good female murderer would have been great. Someone else I recently thought of is Jack Klugman. I think he and Falk would have played off of each other really well.

Great ideas. But there are a lot more good actors and actresses for the "killer" part. What's about Jane Wyman, Bette Davis, Lana Turner, Elizabeth Taylor or Barbara Bain. On the male side James Stewart, Cliff Robertson, Ryan O'Neal, Frank Sinatra (a good friend of Peter Falk) or Lorne Greene. And then we have possible guest stars for the kind of "more sympathetic murderers" like Dean Martin (also a good friend of Peter Falk), Gene Kelly or Olivia-Newton John.

Christopher Walken. Come on now he can play a brilliant bad guy and I think him and Peter Faulk would have had great chemistry. Its still not too late!
