Lt. Hanley and the squad escape capture during an artillery barrage, but Sgt. Saunders is unknowingly left behind in the fiery chaos. Alone and in agony from burns, Saunders wanders in a helpless delirium behind enemy lines.''
This episode is all about Sgt. Saunders. One of Mr. Morrow's best performances. Great range, given the restrictions of this series in context of the times.
I still remember watching this episode the first time, back in Mar. of '63. Vic Morrow gives a powerful performance for which he deserved to win the Emmy not just be nominated. The series and its period in history conspire to render most characters very two dimensionally. Morrow digs deeply to bring us a sweeping range of human emotion and the pathos, agony, loneliness and desperation of the human condition during war. It must have been difficult for the writers and producers to evenly split the audiences' attention between Rick Jason and Vic Morrow. Morrow just fills the screen with personality and small, nuanced gestures that inform the character even when he's standing quietly alone. This episode is captivating television that stands the test of time wonderfully.moreless
