Season 1 Episode 9

The Mom Who Came to Dinner

Aired Tuesday 9:00 PM Nov 29, 2005 on ABC

  • Trivia

    • Polly Bergen, who begins her recurring role as the mother of the first woman President of the United States, has herself played the first female President in the 1964 movie comedy Kisses for My President.

  • Quotes

    • Rod: (about his mother in-law) She's like Jackie Kennedy without the pillbox.

    • Sara: Jayne was an excellent Chief of Staff. You won't find any better. And you know you miss her.
Nathan: Well... I can't hire her back.
      Sara: Why not?
Nathan: Because I'd have to beg.

    • Warren: Does no one here care that closing the bases might be what's best for the country?
Jim: (sarcastically) No, Mr. Vice President, you're the only one who cares about the country. The rest of us are just here for the book deals.

    • Member of the Press: Are you sending a signal that running in the next election isn't a factor for you?
Mackenzie: Right now, I'm concentrating on being President, not running for President.

    • Mackenzie: You really want to make this where we draw our battle lines? You willing to die on this hill?
Templeton: Are you telling me that you're going to take the tape out of the safe and make it public?
Mackenzie: I have no intention of using that tape. I could fight fair and win.

    • Jane: Rumor is the President's decided to run.
      Jim: That's your hello?
Jane: Come on, you guys brought in Dickie McDonald.
Jim: Like a half-hour ago. Did somebody send up a smoke signal from the R.M.C.?
Jane: Uh, we use instant messaging now.

    • Jim: Must be nice to get a visit from someone who's just here for the turkey.
Mac: You don't know my mother.

  • Notes

    • Building its lead-in and gaining audience throughout its broadcast, ABC's "Commander In Chief" was up despite facing NBC's high-rated season finale of "The Biggest Loser 2." Although the freshman ABC drama was pre-empted the prior Tuesday for the "2005 American Music Awards," "Commander in Chief" returned with 1 million more viewers than its most recent telecast (13.6 million vs. 12.6 million). In addition, the show delivered its best numbers across the men demographics in 5 weeks (M18-34 - 2.0/6, M18-49 - 3.2/8 and M25-54 - 4.2/9) -- best since 10/25/05. The ABC political family drama marked the series' third-highest-ever rating among Teens 12-17 (1.4/4).

    • This is the first appearance of Mark-Paul Gosselaar as Richard "Dickie" McDonald.

  • Allusions
