SCHOOL IS ALMOST BACK IN SESSION

... Community held a panel at Comic-Con today, and some details on the show's sixth season—which will air online via Yahoo! Screen—emerged. First, the new season won't be released all at once, in contrast to what Yahoo!'s rival Netflix likes to do with its original programming. Expect new episodes to debut on a weekly basis, and expect creator Dan Harmon to stick with the original feel of the series rather than drastically change things just because the rules are different online than they are on broadcast. It was also revealed during the panel that writing won't begin until the fall, so the new season will likely be unleashed early in 2015. That means no Christmas episode. [Deadline / TVLine]

BUSINESS TIME

... Yar, the Crossbones ship be sinking! NBC is walking its pirate drama off the plank to Saturday nights for the show's final two episodes, after drawing crummy ratings in its first season. The banishment begins next week, after which it will be replaced by Dateline and an NBC News special. Is anyone still watching this show? Raise your hands. Nobody? Okay then. [Deadline]

... ABC is rolling out another Toy Story primetime holiday special, and it now has a release date. Toy Story That Time Forgot (yes, that's the title) will air December 2 at 8pm. It's the follow-up to the successful Halloween special Toy Story of Terror! that aired last year. Toy Story That Time Forgot will see the popular characters getting stuck with a bunch of action figures who turn out to be "dangerously delusional." [ABC via press release]

... Amazon has added a pair of pilots to its next round of offerings, and they go together like peanut butter and mustard. The Man in the High Castle is based on the Philip K. Dick novel, and presents an alternate reality in which Japan and Germany won World War II and occupy the United States. Which probably means Mario Lopez doesn't exist! Just Add Magic follows three 12-year-old girls who discover an old recipe book with instructions on how to make baked goods that contain magical spells... and I'm totally going to watch it. [Deadline]

CASTING NEWS

... HBO's upcoming sports mockumentary is putting together quite the cast. 7 Days in Hell, a made-for-TV movie, will star Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Andy Samberg and Game of Thrones' Kit Harington as rival tennis pros who clash in an epic, seven-day match at Wimbledon in 2004. Also joining the cast are Fred Armisen, Lena Dunham, Will Forte, Karen Gillan, Howie Mandel, Michael Sheen, Mary Steenburgen, June Squibb, and Soledad O'Brien. [THR]

... When Orange Is the New Black returns for Season 3 next summer, it will be down one asshole. Actor Pablo Schreiber, who plays abusive guard George "Pornstache" Mendez on the Netflix series, said he won't return to the prison dramadey. BUMMER. But don't worry! Schreiber has accepted a role on the upcoming HBO dark comedy The Brink alongside Tim Robbins and Jack Black, so he'll be more than fine. As for OITNB, if you watched Season 2 then you know his absence shouldn't be too much of a problem. Plus, the Mendez family will still represented in Season 3 by Mary Steenburgen, who is joining the cast as Pornstache's mother. [NY Post

... Elementary is bringing on Revolution's Zak Orth (Aaron!) and Lost's Sonya Walger (Penny!) for guest roles in Season 3. Walger will play an Assistant U.S. Attorney whose defendant in a high-profile case is murdered. Orth will play a bummed father whose family was torn apart by tragedy. Both characters will appear in the second episode of the upcoming season, which premieres October 30. [TVGuide.com]

... Mayim Bialik has landed a co-hosting spot on TV Land's Candid Camera reboot. She'll laugh at all the people who get duped on the show alongside co-host Peter Funt, son of original Candid Camera host Allen Funt. TV Land's version debuts August 11. [TV Land via press release]

Anyone still watching? I have it recorded but haven't watched yet. But I'd watch it backwards in B&W and Russian without subtitles over Dateline...

The Man in the High Castle and 7 Days in Hell both sound very interesting.

Now I'll never get to the bottom of what the hell accent John Malkovich was trying to do.

so basically we still don't really know anything about how Community will actually be seen by the fans except that it's Yahoo and once a week. pretty much what everybody assumed anyway.

Shame that Pablo Schreiber doesn't return to OITNB. I wonder how they will arrange to have Mendez' mother there, but not Mendez himself.

The Man in the High Castle as a pilot? Oh, I gotta see that! It's not every day we see as classic and acclaimed science fiction novel adapted to TV. The next in my wishlist is Bring the Jubilee, by Ward Moore, in which the South wins the Civil War.

So Harmon is given carte blanche, given a medium that won't restrict him in the least and it is just going to be the same thing? Why? Why not push the boundaries? Show what the show could have been without NBC mucking it up.

pushing the boundaries just because you can doesn't mean you should, it would alienate a lot of the fanbase just to throw in some possible semi/full nudity and harsher language solely because NBC isn't around to censor.

I am not speaking of nudity and language. I am more speaking of trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator NBC viewer and or the execs. It could be season 3 on steroids, it can get really weird and it can get crazy, it doesn't have to add nudity or language because it doesn't need it. But it can break away from trying to please NBC and common viewers. The people that are going to be watching this are community fans and only community fans, so give us what we love and lend some.

I knew seeing Community in the fall was wishful thinking :(
I can't wait for it to come back and i'm glad Dan Harmon is sticking to the same format instead of changing for online purposes
Arrested Development stupidly extended the episodes which changed the flow of the plot
Thank god Community isn't doing that

The Man in the High Tower should be awesome, I've wanted this adapted for ages, the better not screw it up.

Enjoying crossbones a lot more than black sails. Even without the boobs.

I do not think so. I for one liked Black Sails all the way to the end. I stopped watching Crossbones after episode five.

I think it is confirmed Black Sails will have season two but I think Crossbones will likely be cancelled.

I didn't make it passed episode 1 of Crossbones, but I watched the entire first season of Black Sails and still regularly go back just to hear the intro theme to it.

I don't understand how that's even possible. Enjoying Crossbones more, and enjoying it without nudity, too? Just ludicrous!

No boobs on TV?. I should watch real life then.

Does that mean we still won't get to see Annie's Boobs??? [Sorry]

7 Days in Hell sounds pretty bloody good already, I'll have to keep an eye out for that one.

Does anyone else think that the new Toy Story sounds like it's going to be a Small Soldiers rip-off?

I'm supposed to be 4 Episode Testing Crossbones, but the pilot was so crap that I haven't started Episode two yet... maybe I now have a more legitimate reason to abandon that one.

Are you doing a new post for the next batch of shows? You better give POWER a pass:-) I absolutely loved it. My favorite new series.

I'm quite a bit behind, but I'm still planning on releasing a "Summer" batch, which is basically June and July because I was too busy in June do one then.
So far I've only watched the pilot of Power (I'm just about to watch Episode two, which is a nice coincidence), but it's already looking good. ;)

The idea behind Just Add Magic is intriguing, but then there's the three main characters being twelve-year-old girls ("who are best friends!") I fear this is a teenybopper program that won't live up to its premise.

Holy crap, 7 Days in Hell sounds brilliant already.

And every quote I read from the Community panel at SDCC was gold.

I'm not a big fan of Andy Samberg, but the rest of the cast looks fantastic!

Tim, quit saying "nerds" whenever you talk about Halo. Halo is for dude-bros. There's a difference.

When Xenoblade Chronicles gets its own show, then you can say "nerds, look at this."

I still watch Crossbones. It's got flaws, but it entertains me. I'm a fan of Richard Coyle, as well. But if I didn't DVR it, I'd probably never see it. It was already banished to late Friday nights in the summer, but it also never aired consistently; one week on, two weeks off, etc. If you want to kill a show's viewership, that's a pretty good way to do it. Airing what's left on a Saturday night won't be much different.

Sadly, the Saturday night burnoffs are about the most consistent scheduling you get on most networks, just with the knowledge that they're ending shortly.

I still watch Crossbones (sheepishly lowers hand). I don't really know why. Maybe because it is a bit different from cop shows and the oft-repeated other genres plus it looks good. I also watch it matched with The Musketeers and Salem, so as to have a historical past theme. That said, I think they they blew it on calling it Blackbeard and you get Malkovich. It's not really about much and not "piratey" enough either. I'll see it through to the end though, as it's just a couple of episodes, and then Hell on Wheels will fill in nicely.

I guess the British Walger will play an American attorney?

I used to pair up Musketeers and Salem with Turn to keep a historical vibe going too. Did you ever check out Black Sails? Much more pirate-y than Crossbones, especially once you get passed the Nassau politics. Plus it had tons of profanity and nudity!

I saw a free preview of Black Sails' first episode, but I no longer get premium cable. The only time I get to watch anything on those channels now is when the cable company offers its annual free viewing week, aside from getting it through Netflix.

Called it. There was no way they could air in the fall like they originally said.
