• Season 1 Episode 1: Pilot

  • Jeff said he's on a 4-year probationary period because he lied about having a bachelor's degree. The Colorado Bar Association automatically disbars anyone who does that for a minimum of 8 years. And even then, a reinstatement to the bar after that period would be highly unlikely.

  • Season 1 Episode 2: Spanish 101

  • Señor Chang said his name in Spanish is "El Tigre Chino", which means "The Chinese Tiger". However, Ken Jeong is Korean.

  • English Lyrics to Troy and Abed's Spanish Rap:
Where is the library? My name is T-Bone the disco spider. Disco, doll, the library is in big mustache, dog, lard. Lard, mustache, huge, little head is ice cream, beer is good. Good day, I like cold potatoes, the goat's mustache is Cameron Diaz.

  • Season 1 Episode 3: Introduction to Film

  • The caption reading the line "I think the wrong person just left" in Arabic mistakenly translates 'left' as in the direction not the verb which makes no sense when read in Arabic.

  • Season 1 Episode 4: Social Psychology

  • Abed waited 26 hours 13 minutes and 31 seconds for the "psych experiment" before he is finally let home by Annie.

  • Season 1 Episode 5: Advanced Criminal Law

  • During the pencil mouth game between Abed and Troy, Abed tells Troy he managed to stick 36 pencils into his mouth. There were more than 36 pencils (between 38 to 41) in Troy's mouth before he took them out.

  • Music: As Pierce tries to come up with a school song, he uses the melodies of the children's songs, "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain". He finally settles with using the music of Bruce Hornsby's "The Way It Is" from the 1986 album of the same name.

  • Britta's full name is Britta Perry. Professor Duncan's first name is Ian while Dean Pelton's first name is Craig. Señor Chang's first name is Ben.

  • Season 1 Episode 6: Football, Feminism and You

  • During this episode, Troy asks Jeff how he knows that his nickname in high school was "T-Bone"; also, at the end of the episode, when Troy and Abed take over the PA system, Troy refers to himself as "The Disco Spider". These two nicknames are both mentioned in a rap he and Abed did at the end of Episode 2, which starts with (translated from Spanish) "Where is the library, my name is T-Bone, the disco spider."

  • Troy's last name is Barnes.

  • Season 1 Episode 7: Introduction to Statistics

  • When Pierce's mother is on the phone, she says "I saw your father's ghost again. He's still angry." Yet, we meet Pierce's very much alive father in the season three episode "Advanced Gay." Ironically, Pierce's father does die in that episode.

  • During the episode the characters dressed up in the following: Jeff as a cowboy, Britta as a squirrel, Abed as Batman, Shirley as Harry Potter, Annie in a skeleton catsuit, Troy as Eddie Murphy from Raw, Pierce as the Beastmaster and Señor Chang as a bull fighter.

  • Season 1 Episode 8: Home Economics

  • Pierce's Rap Lyrics: East side, West side, North side, South / Vaughn's breath is so bad, his butt's mad at his mouth / This rap is by Pierce, Vaughn is dumb / He wears diapers to bed and sucks his mother's thumb / And when he wakes up, stupid wishing he was me / He has a big poop breakfast with a glass of pee / Then he goes to school where he's stupid again / And everybody hates him even all his friends / When you come after Pierce then the battle is on / So this rap goes out to stupid Vaughn.

  • Goof: When Troy tells Annie that Randi is the name of the girl he would like to date, he says "Thanks for your help", gives her a strange look, and drops his finger. However, as the camera angle changes, it shows Troy with his finger still in the air and moving his lips as if speaking.

  • Lyrics to Vaughn and Pierce's Britta Song: Saying bye to Britta was the hardest thing to do. But when someone's a b!tch and a liar, there ain't nothing left to woo. I'm getting rid of Britta, I'm getting rid of the B. (She's a no good B...) I'm getting rid of Britta, I'm getting rid of the B. (She's a GDB...)

  • Movie posters in Abed's dorm room include those of Batteries Not Included, Stand By Me, It Came from Beneath the Sea, Back to the Future, Vibes, and Short Circuit 2.

  • Season 1 Episode 9: Debate 109

  • The Spanish rap ("La Biblioteca") bit being filmed at the end of this episode is originally done by Abed and Troy in the episode "Spanish 101".

  • Season 1 Episode 12: Comparative Religion

  • It's revealed that Jeff is 33 years old.

  • Goof: Troy is mistaken -- Jehovah's Witnesses may, in fact, consume alcoholic beverages, provided that they do so in moderation (i.e. drunkenness, the misuse of alcohol, is considered the sin -- 1 Corinthians 6:10). Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons), however, abstain from drinking of alcoholic and/or hot beverages. Also, Jehovah's Witnesses do not believe in celebrating religious holidays (which Troy does in this episode, as well as Dia De Los Muertos a few episodes earlier). Another tenet is to limit friendship and contact with those who are not fellow members of the church (something Troy certainly does not do on this show).

All of these things put together suggest that Troy has either been "disfellowshipped" (their version of an excommunication), or simply doesn't know enough about his family's religion to know what beliefs to adhere to.

  • Abed is Muslim, Troy is a follower of Jehovah's Witness, Shirley is Christian, Annie is Jewish, Jeff is agnostic, Britta is an atheist, and Pierce claims to be Buddhist but isn't.
