En route to Yara's stronghold, Conan and Otli are ambushed by the female bandit Karella and her archers. Karella takes Conan in and tries to seduce him. Conan tells her he is only his way to Yara's stronghold to rescue Tamara and kill the wizard Yara. Karella mentions Yara has a jewel called the Heart of the Elephant which she desires, so she thinks they should go to Yara's stronghold together, though she also thinks only a fool would steal from a wizard. Conan and Otli end up going alone, though Karella and her archers follow closely behind.
Meanwhile, Vulkar and Zzeben find Dor and the refugees who survived the earlier attack on Tamara's village. They decide to travel together. Elsewhere, Conan enters Yara's stronghold and makes a deal with him. Tamara will be freed once Conan brings him the Heart of the Elephant. Conan promises Yara death should he go back on his word, though he plans to kill him anyway.
Along with Otli and Karella, Conan enters the tower in which the jewel resides. Before they can climb to the top, they must battle the soldier guardians. Karella's best archer is killed in the attack, making this battle personal. Otli and Karella stay outside while Conan enters and battles a giant spider that guards the entrance to the Heart of the Elephant room. Once Conan defeats the arachnid, splicing off it's leg, he enters the Elephant chamber and discovers in the chamber there is wizard named Yah-Cosha that is entrapped as an elephant. That work was done by Yara so long ago, as was the spider, who was Yah-Cosha's mate. Yah-Cosha asks that Conan kill him, as he did his mate earlier, and then to pour his blood on the jewel and give it to Yara as a gift from Yah-Cosha.
In the city, Yara tells Hissah Zul's General, Goroth, where Tamara is, and when Tamara refuses to give Goroth the location of her beloved, Goroth stabs her through the chest. When Conan escapes the chamber, he goes back to Yara, giving him the gem, which is supposed to make him all powerful, but instead destroys him. But by the time Conan finds Tamara, she dies in his arms.
Joined by Otli, Vulkar, and Zzeben, then soon by Karella and her bandits and Dor and the refugees, Conan goes into battle against Hissah Zul's General and many soldiers. Conan's forces win, and Conan himself wins by drowning Goroth, forcing him to die a slow suffocating death like Tamara did. Hissah Zul is informed by The Skull That Talks about Goroth's death, and moves his castle of Argas to a different, undisclosed location. Joined by Otli, Vulkar, and Zzeben, Conan will now journey to seek out Hissah Zul and kill him, thus achieving his true destiny which is to be king.moreless
