Episode Summary

Stand By Your Man
Tammy Wynette released "Stand by Your Man" in November 1968. The song's message of a woman's loyalty to her man despite his infidelity and neglect struck a nerve with feminists who were fighting for women's equality in the late '60s and early '70s. The song went to No. 1 on the country singles chart and was a pop crossover hit. "Stand by Your Man" became Wynette's signature tune and was featured in several movies, including Five Easy Pieces and Sleepless in Seattle. The song sparked controversy once again during the 1992 presidential campaign when soon-to-be first lady Hillary Clinton mentioned it during an interview with 60 Minutes. The song also has been covered by an eclectic group of artists, including Tina Turner, Lyle Lovett and Elton John.moreless
