Episode Summary

Fun Run
In order to prepare for the local Fun Run, Lacey and Wanda start a running club; Lacey tries to get others to join, and manages to convince Brent. Unfortunately, his idea of running isn't quite what Lacey had in mind. Oscar cons a doctor into giving him handicap plates for his car, which embarrasses Emma, until a shopping trip shows her just how handy those handicap plates can be. Hank decides to contribute to society by becoming the crossing guard, but his commitment to the job is put to the test, and Hank is torn between duty and fun.moreless

  • Oscar gets a special license and Jann beats everyone.

Jann Arden makes her Corner Gas debut. Who knew she could run? I think they faked it, but that was a good gag. Here is this really nice lady that is over weight running faster than everyone else, even though they are in better shape.

For obvious reasons, most of the episode is centred on the upcoming fun run. The biggest gag being that Lacey is so bad a runner, even Oscar can beat her. Of course, Oscar is out of shape, but finds he needs to run to prove he is not feeble. That is the second gag since he gets a handicapped license plate so he can park close to the stores.

This second gag is actually the better one of the two. Emma comments that there is no need for such a license since in Dog River every spot is close to the door. She then does the predictable and uses it at the mega mall in "the city". She gets hooked on the ease of shopping with such a close spot, and starts doing tons of shopping.

    That is gag three.

Overall, this episode felt a little less humourous than what we have come to expect. I have tagged it as slightly funning than Key To The Future, which says a lot. I am hoping that they did not tape the whole season at once. That way they can read the reviews and change the second half of the season as appropriate.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • The school that Hank is crossing kids in front of has a sign advertising the Fun Run. It also says, above that, "Home of The Rebels".

  • QUOTES (12)

    • Lacey: Brent, you should run with us, you'd sleep better.
Brent: Maybe you guys can talk about running some more, I'll drift right off.

    • Brent: Is this something you have to do right now?
Prime Minister Paul Martin: Is now a bad time?
Brent: Sort of... for me, anyway. I kind of had the next 30 minutes planned out.
Prime Minister Paul Martin: Couldn't you do your thing later?
Brent: This is really the only half hour in the week they let me do anything; the rest is pretty much Canadian Idol.

    • Hank: Well, I've been thinking... I don't contribute to society.
Brent: Sure you do! You're a morale booster. By contributing nothing, you make everyone else feel good about themselves.

    • Emma: People who use these plates usually have something wrong with them... more wrong with them.
Oscar: Who cares? Now we can park close to things!
Emma: Where are we, Manhattan? We always park close to things.
      Oscar: Gotta think ahead.
      Emma: Try thinking, period.

    • Lacey: Hey, maybe we should run together, start a group.
Wanda: What's in it for me?
Lacey: Motivation. Companionship. Maybe even a little friendly competition.
Wanda: Yeah, I'll do it anyway.

    • Wanda: Yeah, my aunt has a bad back; it's terrible.
Oscar: Sometimes, the pain's too much.
Wanda: No, I meant listening to her go on about it.

    • Lacey: We're training for the Fun Run.
Brent: Jeez, there's two words that don't belong together!

    • Hank: Oh, hey, Oscar, I heard you're mentally handicapped.
      Oscar: I'm not mentally handicapped!
Hank: Oh, right, sorry. I meant 'mentally challenged'.

    • Hank: Karen! I got something I want to share with you. You know, one officer to another.
      Lacey (sarcastically): Officer!
Karen: Uh, Hank, no offence... okay, offence, but you're a crossing guard.
Hank: I know. That doesn't mean what you do is any less important.

    • Hank (to Karen): Now, you may not respect me, but I respect me and I respect you. In fact, I have enough respect to make up for the lack of respect that you don't have for me, respectfully.

    • Lacey: I can't run listening to Jann Arden.
(cut to: Lacey running with Jann Arden
Jann Arden: So the tour bus pulls into Winnipeg, it breaks down, ...absolutely terrible... and then I got a sinus infection and the only doctor who was even around was a dentist, which I thought...)

Lacey: That's not what I meant.
Wanda: Plus, you wouldn't be able to keep up with her.

    • Davis: This is great. And being part of a group means I'll keep at it.
      Brent: I dig that, Daddy-O.
Davis: What are you, a hep-cat now?
Brent: It's something I'm trying out.

  • NOTES (1)

    • The first scene that shows Lacey and Wanda running together features each one separately, shown in a stop-frame, mid-stride, with a "Latin" name underneath. The name under Wanda is "Fastus Cashierus" and the name under Lacey is "Slowus Coffeeshopownerus".

This is a reference to the Road Runner cartoons that were featured in The Bugs Bunny Show. Wile E. Coyote would chase the Road Runner and each one would be shown in a stop-frame with a fake Latin name (such as "Fastus Birdicus") underneath.
