  • Another week and another excellent adventure.

This week was a montage of stories as a fast paced story was played out. The nice thing is that although it was fast pace, it was not rushed. They even took their time to add three 'C' stories rather than just the usual one. This was mostly done to pad a thin main story line.

Speaking of thin, the main story once again revolves around Brent. This time, it is his thinning hair and receding hairline. This story on its own was not big enough of a whole episode arc. Thankfully the writers saw this too and added two other small stories to fill the gap instead of stretching the hair jokes too thin.

The highlight of the hairline story was when Lacey gives his hair a little lift with a mango shampoo. Of course, it looks exactly like it did, at least to Lacey. To Brent's chagrin everyone notices though. This includes a farmer that just needs to keep sniffing Brent's hair. Brent eventually comes to terms with his hair, which is just in time for Lacey to mention his ears just before the credits.

The secondary stories were about an auction for some lady who died. Wanda ends up buying an ugly old elephant lamp, while Davis gets an ugly mounted fish. Wanda and Emma then end up in a battle of wills as Emma wants her lamp back (she had loaned it to the old lady over 10 years earlier), and Wanda wants to keep it since it is worth about fifteen hundred dollars.

In the meantime, Davis really does not like the fish and Karen will not let him put it up on the wall at the office. Davis attempts to get rid of it several times. Hank even offers to take it off Davis' hands for twenty bucks. Davis accepts until he realizes that Hank was charging Davis 20 bucks to dispose of the fish at the dump. In the end, Oscar buys it.

The tertiary stories were about Hank try to fix small appliances and Lacey learning magic for Oscar. Hank wants to help Brent by fixing the compressor in the milk fridge. Brent agrees to allow Hank to fix some things that are broken around the station to prove his worth. Hank ends up repairing the gas bell with a door bell; fixes the fan, although it sucks instead of blows; and Hank fixes the elephant lamp. "Now the lamp can take a 150 watt halogen", and makes the lamp worthless as a turn of the century antique.

It turns out that Oscar has no concept of perspective. When Lacey gives him his usual sandwich on a bigger plate, he complains that the portion is smaller. To demonstrate that the plate changed and not the sandwich, she puts a coffee cup beside the plate, but then he asks why she shrunk the coffee cups.

Lacey comes to realize that when she does magic tricks (like making pop disappear by pouring a full small glass of pop into a larger glass, which is no longer full) Oscar does not complain. However, she ends up blowing it by "going all Hollywood" with a fancy coin trick.

Overall, this is one of the better episodes for the season to date. It had me laughing out loud for the first time in weeks, and kept the pace moving all the way through the show.moreless

  • TRIVIA (3)

    ADD TRIVIA
    • (Brent has found a hair in his soup) Brent: It's probably the cook's hair. Lacey: Oh... but Josh wears a hairnet back there. Although the Ruby Cook and Busboy has appeared in many episodes, both credited and uncredited (beginning with Cell Phone, in season 1), and has had the occasional line, he has never been called by name before.

    • The magic book that Lacey reads in the episode is called Magic Made Easy and is by Mark Mallet. This is the same name that was used in the second season episode American In Saskatchewan; Mark Mallet was Dog River's original Goodwill Ambassador.

    • The Latin phrase that Wanda uses when she gives the lamp back to Emma is "Nemo dat quod non habet." (No one gives what he does not possess.)

  • QUOTES (11)

    ADD QUOTES
    • Brent: Like I don't have enough face east to west, now it's pushing northward. Lacey: Maybe you could grow a beard, kind of bolster the south.

    • (Brent is emptying the milk cooler) Brent: The cooling unit in here's fried. Hank: Oh, I'll fix it for you. Brent: What's that going to cost me? Hank: Do it for free. Brent: I mean the inevitable fire... what's that going to cost me?

    • Brent: I'm going bald, Hank. These things are like lemmings. Hank: Lemmings go bald? Lacey: Lemmings follow each other off cliffs and jump to their deaths. Hank: Just 'cause they're going bald? That's a bit drastic.

    • Karen: How did Florence die anyway? Wanda: Oh, ah... she died of a rare condition called "almost 100." Davis: Good ol' natural causes!

    • (Wanda comes in carrying a paper bag with the lamp in it) Wanda: Check this out, I got it at the Bickleigh auction. Hank: Old lady Bickleigh had quite the collection of paper bags.

    • (referring to her original Featherstone lamp) Wanda: The value of this stuff went through the roof when he went blind in 1903. Hank: I think he made this one in 1904.

    • Emma: My elephant lamp! Where'd you get that? Wanda: Florence Bickleigh gave it to me... sold it to me. Emma: How could she sell you my lamp? Brent: In Wanda's defence, Florence was dead at the time.

    • Davis: Hey Wanda, you were right when you said that lamp was uuug-ly! Karen: She didn't say it was ugly, you said it was ugly. Wanda: Thank you, Karen. Karen: She said it was tacky and/or icky.

    • Davis: As far as I know, possession is nine-tenths of the law. Karen: That's not the law, that's just some old adage. Davis: You got any newer adages? Karen: Is that part of the finders-keepers, losers-weepers law? Emma: So the lamp is mine! Wanda: You're the weeper, I'm the finder-keeper.

    • Brent: I don't like this hairdo. Lacey: It's not a 'hairdo,' Agnes. Brent: My head smells like a mango; I look like an idiot that smells like a mango.

    • Lacey: Your hair is not froofy, it's not puffy; You know what? It barely smells like anything. (a farmer comes up behind Brent and begins sniffing his hair) Brent: Is there a farmer sniffing my head? Lacey: People around here just aren't used to mangos.

  • ALLUSIONS (4)

    ADD ALLUSIONS
    • Hank: Don't worry about it. You'll look good bald... look distinguished. Brent: Really? (a car honks outside for gas) Maybe that's a casting agent from a soap opera! Lacey: Maybe they're from 'The Bald & The Beautiful'! Lacey is making a joke on the name of an actual American soap opera The Bold And The Beautiful.

    • Lacey: You know, some of the sexiest men in the world are bald. Sean Connery. Ed Harris... very sexy. Andre Agassi. ...Elmer Fudd... is really cute. Brent: Whew, big drop-off between three and four there. Sean Connery (1930 - ) is a well-known Scottish actor, most noted for playing James Bond, who was voted "Sexiest Man Alive" by People Magazine in 1989. Ed Harris (1950 - )is an American actor who has been nominated for four Academy Awards. Andre Agassi (1970 - ) is an American tennis player who has been ranked Number 1 in the world. Elmer J. Fudd is a cartoon character; he is constantly trying to hunt Bugs Bunny, unsuccessfully. He has a speech impediment that causes him to pronounce his Rs as Ws, as in "Wascally Wabbit!"

    • Oscar: Lacey does magic tricks! She's good, she's like that Kurt Henning. Oscar may be mixing up a couple of Canadian heroes: Kurt Browning and Doug Henning. Kurt Browning (1966 - ) is a professional figure skater who has appeared in various ice shows, as well as competing in the Olympics. Although he never won any medals at the Olympics, he's a Canadian and World champion. Doug Henning (1947 - 2000) was a magician who had successful Broadway shows, and created special effects for rock stars. He appeared on various talk shows throughout his career, and had an annual World of Magic special that was nominated for seven Emmys.

    • Lacey: I know Sherlock Holmes doesn't get out this way often, but that's no reason to let logic take a holiday. Sherlock Holmes is the fictional detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who relied on logic to solve crimes.
