12/24/62Christmas Eve: Ena agrees to play the piano for the play. The residents try to make mend with the costumes, although Minnie doesn't go down too well as a gaiety girl. Ena opens with "Land of Hope and Glory" and Emily gets stage fright. The curtain gets stuck so Ena leads everyone in sing-songs. Jed prompts as Albert gets stuck in the French Window. Emily is plied with tranquilisers and whisky. After the play she faints into Swindley's arms. 12/19/62Minnie finds it hard to learn her ten lines. Word spreads that Len has failed an insurance medical. Jed goes to Liverpool to get costumes for the play. ENA: "All I ever get for Christmas is a frozen lavvy." Sheila and Doreen drop out of the play to concentrate on boys. Albert threatens to tell Val about the money situation if she doesn't. Ken's replacement arrives at Bessie Street and Albert tells Ken. Ken decides not to give up teaching. Swindley tries to hold a dress rehearsal with no costumes and with everything falling down around him. Jed turns up with the costumes, which all turn out to be from the wrong period.moreless -

Swindley is grateful to his supporters and agrees to produce the play. Linda decides she doesn't want to return to Canada. -
11/26/62Voting Day. The residents vote at Bessie Street. Emily and Doreen have to wear rosettes. Elsie meets the boat as the Cheveskis return. Jed gets a stall on the market. The Mission Players have a first read through. Minnie is too late to vote. -
11/21/62Ken looks forward to leaving Bessie Street at Christmas. Len redecorates Elsie's back room for the Cheveskis. Swindley finds canvassing hard work. Jack gets Martha to hand back the letter. 11/19/62Dennis writes to Elsie asking her to take Jed in as a lodger. Jed arrives with his cases but Elsie refuses to take him in. She gets a letter from Linda telling her they're coming over for Christmas. Minnie takes pity on Jed and takes him in. Len returns to the news of the basins. The Literacy committee decide to hold the play at St Joseph's, and not at the Mission so the over 60's won't get the proceeds. Albert decides to form The Mission Hall Players and puts on their own play. The police show an interest in the basins. Christine talks Frank into letting her do some cleaning for him. Jed produces a receipt for the basins but it shows he bought them for only 6 10/-. Frank tells Albert he'll be in the play when he learns Christine is in it.moreless -
11/14/62Susan tells Albert that her father beats her and is often drunk. He discovers that he is working on the hole. Jed looks for somewhere to live. Albert takes Susan home and tells mother May that he wants to talk to father Jim. Albert is put off and as Susan cowers in her room, Jim threatens May if she entertains strangers. Jerry fears that the basins were stolen. Albert confronts Jim in the street. Jim goes for him and is threatened by Harry. Annie tells Jack she wants a party to celebrate their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Ken discovers Frank has been reading about marriage bureau. Joan Akers turns up and tells her friend, Sheila, that her husband Brian has left her. Annie helps Concepta prepare for the party, getting Lucille to run errands with Christopher. 9/17/62Annie prepares the snug for Ena, replacing her old chair with a new one. Dot doesn't want Elsie to get involved with Dave. SHEILA: (about Dave) "I've seen 'em like 'im 'angin' round the palais in their big cars when we come out. I wouldn't trust 'im an inch that one!" Ena doesn't want the new chair and demands the old one back. The residents are shocked to see Dave calling on Elsie. Dave offers Elsie her winnings or a night out with him. She settles for the night out. DAVE: "Tangle with me an' you'll get nothing but trouble but I'll promise you one thing - you'll enjoy it." She doesn't want to go and is delighted when Doreen suggests they get a flat. Ena thinks Len has spent the night with Elsie. Harry finds Len in the loft after eighteen hours. Swindley is troubled by his female tenant who entertains male friends a lot. Doreen and Sheila persuade Florrie to let them have her vacant flat above the shop. Christine tells Ken she's getting out of Coronation Street for good. Colin collects her and they leave together. Concepta has a fainting fit whilst shopping. Christine leaves a note for Sheila telling her she's going to London with Colin and that they will be settling in Leeds. Doreen and Sheila are puzzled by Christine, a boy chats her up but she acts mysteriously. Ena goes to a convalescent home in Southport. The Walkers go to a Brewery Dance, planning to stay the night in a plush hotel. Ena locks the piano lid but Minnie opens it with a hair pin. She entertains the audience of 400 with 'Goodbye Dolly Gray'. Captain Johnson and his troupe break down but send the sealions, Bunny and Sherry on. Dennis has to cancel the concert, causing an uproar. Ena gets drunk with the Rockets. Dennis is stuck with the Rockers and sealions for the night. He gets the Rover's key off Concepta and installs them in the Rovers. The Walkers return home to find sealions in the bath and the Rockers in their bed.moreless -

The "Banner" newspaper gets in contact with Ken and asks him to write articles on 'Life in a typical Northern town' for 180 guineas. Frank thinks Ken should write the articles for the money. Mr Fanakapan, the landlord, is stirred into action by the article and offers to do all improvements to the houses himself. Harry and Len refuse to believe the article inspired him. Ken decides not to write the articles, but when Len thinks he's not doing them because he's had enough trouble, Ken changes his mind.moreless -

Summing up the attitude of the people he lives and works among, Barlow described them as 'lazy-minded, politically ignorant, starved of a real culture and stubbornly prejudiced against any advance in human insight, and scientific progress". Len and Harry grow very angry over the article. Frank rows with Ken, ashamed of his disloyalty to his class. He tells Ken he can not write any more articles. Harry wants to write complaining to the papers but Len feels it would do no good. Elsie feels the article was well-written but warns Ken that Len is after him. Len insults Ken to Frank and refuses to apologise causing Frank to fight him in the Street. Ken realises he'll have to stand up to the residents. When he tries to put across his view point in the Rovers, Len hits him and they brawl across the pub.moreless -
