When Jet gets swindled by Faye, he loses all of his clothes, so he goes to the storage bay to get a blanket. While there, he gets bitten by an unknown creature, though he didn't get a good look at what it was. Spike and Faye dismiss it as a rat, though they soon discover that the scenario is much more serious than they realized, as one by one they fall victim by the creature until only Spike is left to deal with the problem.moreless

When I saw the preview for this episode, I will not lie to you....I was scared. The preview freaked me out so much I was wondering if I should watch it or not. But, I talked myself into watching it and I am so glad that I did, this has got to be one of my favorite episodes. It starts out with Faye and Jet gambling, and of course Faye cheats, and it shows Spike cooking with a flame-thrower. As the show continues on we see that this Thing came out of a refrigerator that was kept in a back room. As Spike tries to expel it from the Bebop-by shooting the refigeraator into space-the Thing bites Spike's arm before he can send it off. In the end Spike can barely hang on while the refrigerator goes into space and at the last minute falls and hits the door, Jet, Faye and Ian still unconcious from the bite marks, Ed finds the Thing and eats it.moreless
  • Scary beyond belief!

The episode starts with the strange heat sensitive
view as a yet unidenfied alien creature roams the ship's sewage? system feeding on rats. Cut to Faye and Jet playing poker with Jet losing and having to give Faye his clothes and practicly everything he owns except maybe Bebop. Jet goes to the storage comp. and notices a strange refigerator and then gets bit by the creature later,Jet colapses and is tested for any known poisons/viruses meanwhile fliching at some of the viruses etc. a while after with Jet resting/comatose or whatever Faye is alone and gets bit going into the lounge she freaks out saying she's gonna die etc, while this is going on Ed and Spike testing out thermal goggles Ed stupidly chases after Ein who is chasing the creature and falls asleep. Spike chasing after Ed
comes across Ein bit and poisoed from it, decides
to chase the creature and destroy it while he finally realizes the the culprit was a Ganymede stone crab he left in the fridge hidden in the comp. for a year. After opening the airlock spike gets poisoned and lets the fridge into space. This was so creepy and such a ripoff of aliens it was perfect.moreless
  • One of the creepiest episodes.

The episode has a creepy soundtrack and has the aura of the first Alien movie. The crew is slowly becoming more and more paranoid while Ed is ranting on about aliens. Eventually every crew member save Ed is incapacitated (Ed is taking a nap) culminating with Spike being taken out as the ship drifts into nothingness. Funny that this isn't the last episode or that it doesn't explain how they survive on any episode. I think it would be interesting if they would go back and for some special explain what happened.moreless

    • Jet: Don't you have any real medicine that's just for sores and wounds? Spike: That would be this. (holds up a dried-up lizard) Jet: Ugh! That heals wounds? Spike: Yup. You squish it up and boil it in three cups of water and when it turns green and goopy, you drink it. Jet: Spike, isn't there something more, y'know, different? Spike: Oh yeah! I got it! Jet: Yeah, gimme that. (Spike holds up a dried-up scorpion) Ugh! I'll take the other thing.

    • Lesson 1 Jet: Humans were meant to work and sweat to earn a living. Those that try to get rich quick, or live at the expense of others, all get divine retribution somewhere along the line. That's the lesson. Unfortunately, we quickly forget the lessons we've learn. Then we have to learn them all over again.

    • Lesson 2 Faye: "Survival of the fittest" is the law of nature. We deceive, or we are deceived. Thus, we flourish, or perish. Nothing good ever happened to me when I trusted others. That...is the lesson.

    • Lesson 3 Ed: August six, Sky Day. Today, Ed goes looking for the spooky, mysterious, horrible alien. Lesson, Lesson: If you see a stranger, follow him.

    • Lesson 4 Spike: And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

    • [coming episode] (Smooth sax music plays) Ed: And so...they all passed away. Everyone. It was a short series, but thanks for your support. That was the last episode. May they all rest in peace. Amen...And for the next series we bring you "Cowgirl Ed"! Ed is the main character hahahaha! Spike: Hey, wait a minute! Faye: What kind of selfish thing is that?! Jet: Next episode: Jupiter Jazz Part 1. Spike: There really is a next episode!

    • The Japanese title of this episode is different from the English title of "Toys in the Attic". The Japanese title is「闇夜のヘヴィ・ロック」( "Yamiyo no Heavy Rock") or "Dark Night of Heavy Rock".

    • Unlike most episodes, this episode doesn't end with "See you Space Cowboy." Instead, the text simply reads "The End," making Ed's comments in the next episode preview even funnier (see quotes).

  • ALLUSIONS (5)

    ADD ALLUSIONS
    • Aerosmith The title "Toys in the Attic" comes from an Aerosmith song (and 1975 album) of the same name.

    • Star Trek Jet's opening monologue begins with the words "Space travel log 0968" which is a reference to the beginning of all of the Star Trek series that always have the captain for that particular series giving the Stardate in which the episode takes place.

    • Alien The creature aboard the Bebop, the mystery behind it, as well as the sequence in which the creature is shown on the Spike's handheld map device, is a reference to Ridley Scott's 1979 movie Alien.

    • Route 66 As Spike is preparing to fight the monster, the Bebop computer states, "Currently in cruise mode on Route 66." Route 66 was the major thoroughfare between Chicago, IL, and Los Angeles, CA in the early and middle part of the 20th Century, carrying the distinction of the longest continuous highway in the United States. Most of the route has now become part of the Interstate Highway System, but it can still be traced from the Windy City to the Pacific Ocean. Also, it is a reference to the song entitled "(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66", composed in 1946 by the Bobby Troup and first recorded that same year by Nat King Cole. This also is consistent with Cowboy Bebop's use of popular American songs.

    • 2001: A Space Odyssey The ending sequence, which includes the musical piece "Waltz of the Flowers" by Russian composer Peter IlyichTchaikovsky, is a reference to the 1968 movie 2001: A Space Odyssey which was written by Arthur C. Clarke and directed by Stanley Kubrick.
