The mechanic Doohan has a hobby of restoring "classic" aircraft of the 20th century including a Russian MI-24 Hind helicopter, a F-14 Tomcat fighter jet, and the Space Shuttle Columbia, the last of which had been completely destroyed during re-entry on Feburary 1, 2003 due to a piece of foam shedding and damaging the wing. The English dub also mentions tiles falling off on re-entry.
(Spike calls the Bebop.) Faye: Hello? Oh, it's you. The mysterious missing guy. Where have you been hiding out? Spike: I'm still at Doohan's shop. So where's Jet? Faye: He's got his hands full right now. He said he was working on some kind of bacteria or something. Spike: Bacteria? Jet: No, it's a virus, Faye. A computer virus. Faye: Well it's the same thing. Ed: Uhhhh? Uh-uh. Jet: Starting with the mono-system orbit calculator, navigator, engine control, communications circuit. They're all gone. Spike: I don't get it. How about using English huh? Ed: The computer's kaput, and we're drifting through space towards certain oblivion. Spike: (sighs) Definitely got that.
Spike: (sighs in relief) Doohan, you saved my ass. (pulls out lighter.) Doohan: Not yet. Spike: Huh? Doohan: Most of the heat resistant tiles have peeled off. The temperature is rising. (Spike lights his cigarette.) Miles: The landing wheels aren't retracting! Doohan: Yep, and the #2 nozzle won't work either. (Spike smiles as he puffs his cigarette.) Miles: What? Are you for real? We can't land without them. I knew I shouldn't have come up here. Spike: Oh well. Whatever happens, happens. Miles: I'm only 18. I don't wanna die yet. I've never even been with a woman! Somebody help!
Spike: (about to crash into the planet) Oh, well. Whatever happens, happens.
Doohan: Spike. I know you can do it, boy. I didn't give you the Swordfish for nothing, you know? Spike: Yeah, don't you go and crash either, old man.
Miles: Hey, uh, do people ever tell you that you don't talk much? Spike: Hey, well, do people ever tell you that you talk too much? Miles: Huh, I guess so.
Miles: (flicking on switches) Maximum propulsion. Doohan: There's still time to change your mind and leave, Miles. Miles: Negative! Blue Sox fans never leave the game early!
Ruth(talking about the Bebop): Man, what a piece of crap.
