This episode is part two of the pilot episode of the UK Cracker series. In part one, his wife had taken the children with her and left Fitz because of his drinking and gambling. She had finally had it. Part two has Fitz trying to deal with the loss of his wife and children, this case, and continuing with the vices. Fitz tries various times to get the amnesiac, Francis Kelly, to confess or at least to remember details of his life. He even brings the suspected murderer home with him. When a caller phones the police, Fitz figures out that the caller was the murderer. The only somewhat soft moment for Fitz comes at the end as he is returning Kelly to the monastery from whence he came. Jimmie McGovern wrote these brilliant two-part opening episodes. Cracker has a deeply flawed hero, who is self-destructive. It is different than other British detective series.moreless
