The opening for each episode of Crank Yankers informs viewers "The calls you are about to hear are real. The names have not been changed. Screw the innocent." This message was a parody of the opening of the popular docu-drama, Dragnet, which aired on both television and radio and told viewers "Ladies and gentlemen, the story you are about to hear is true. The names have been changed to protect the innocent."
