A Criminal Minds Community
Wednesday 9:00 PM on CBS (Returning September 28, 2016)

It didn't take long for Criminal Minds to find Jeanne Tripplehorn's replacement.

Jennifer Love Hewitt has joined the cast of the CBS procedural as a series regular, the network announced Tuesday.

The Ghost Whisperer alum will play Kate Callahan, an undercover agent whose great work at the FBI has landed her a coveted position with the Behavioral Analysis Unit.

"We're thrilled to introduce a new special agent by adding the very talented Jennifer Love Hewitt to our amazing cast," executive producer Erica Messer said in a statement. "Many of us on the show have enjoyed working with her over the years and look forward to again. We have exciting storylines planned for her character and the entire BAU team as we head into our tenth season."

Hewitt will make her debut in the Season 10 premiere, airing Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 9pm on CBS. She steps into the gap left by Tripplehorn, who exited the show in the Season 9 finale after two years on the drama. Tripplehorn, in turn, was brought in to fill the void left by the departure of longtime cast member Paget Brewster.

When talking with TVGuide.com in May, Messer was unsure of whether a new cast member would be added for Season 10. "Every option is possible right now," she said at the time.

Hewitt, who is also known for her roles on The Client List and Party of Five, most recently guest-starred on Hot in Cleveland.

I don't mind JLH, I mean she's indiferent, plain. But I'd surely love to see a more bad a$$ female version of Moore. The show needs "more muscles", and a perfect choice would be Shaw (Sarah Shahi) from POI or even Root (Amy Acker), Kate beckinsale, Milla Jovovich...a "lara croft" kind of character.

I STOP watching criminal minds because of Jennifer Love Hewitt. She has a weak personality therefore this character really doesn't suit her as she looks helpless and hopeless at all times when we are expecting tough actors to play this kind of role. She's good for romantic series but not this. So PLEASE PLEASE take her out or I'm sure the ratings will go down. From the comments below, I know I'm not the only one who feels this way about her. Seriously this character is REALLY NOT FOR HER. PLEASE listen to your fans Mr Producer...I really hope you will take our comments into consideration. Thanks

Jennifer Love Hewitt is even a worse casting decision then the late Blake who I could not stand. She is a not so good JJ. Why can't they admit they were wrong and find another Emily - a strong forceful but beautiful yes beautiful woman. She was great. Love Hewitt is another disaster I can't wait another 2 years for them to find it out. She better get very macho very quick or get rid of her and for sure get rid of that dumb hair. I also want to see a lot more of Hodge and more Morgan and Garcia sparring (now they have chemistry) Morgan better loose the girlfriend quick. I want more of Hodge to - he's looking too grave these days, I would really like to see him
laugh and smile once in awhile like he used to - if anyone needs a tough interesting girlfriend who at first he may not like it's Hodge.

What is up with this? It's getting as bad and CSI, and that show went to shit when Petersen left. Hopefully they can keep the show together. If not let it die a dignified death and not drag out the terminal illness like CSI.

I'm looking forward to seeing JLH in Criminal Minds. I never cared for Elle Greenaway, Emily Prentiss, Ashley Seaver or Alex Blake.

I dont understand when people say "I cannot picture her on this show". She is a actress, they act. Thats what they do. A good actress can play any role no matter what it is, and I believe that Jennifer Love Hewitt is a great actress. She can go from speaking to ghost, to jerking guys for money and then she can go and catch some bad guys. People should wait and see her on the show first before judging her and saying that the show is ruined now. She did some really good acting on The Client List, she was actually nominated for an golden globe.

Why would they do this? I wasn't a fan of Blake at first bu she fit later. Show's had a few changes before, but this,? No, just NO.

Oh dear lord...are they trying to ruin the entire show? Jennifer is one of THE WORST actresses! She is going to cause the even further decline of this excellent show. She will not fit in at all. I LOVED Triplehorn she is an amazing act I was happy to see replace Prentiss, I didn't like her either.

What is up with the casting changes on this show? Or is it just me...? But seems like they've been running through different actresses really fast, ever since Prentiss left.
What's so difficult about finding one actress to stay on more than one season at a time? (In addition to JJ) Although I'm being a bit hypocritical here, since I didn't care for Blake's character that much, but still. Anyone else notice this?

Well they should have just kept Emily. (I didn't hate Elle too.) Like many many fans of the show i couldn't care for Blake at first too. But i thought she was kinda starting to blending in especially towards the end of season, only for her to leave? And now they do this.. Whoever's idea it was to add this person is one of the biggest mistakes for the show.

seriously? they really need to stop trying to replace paget brewster. nobody will EVER be her. I'm glad tripplehorn left I didn't care for her one bit. but the show sucks after brewster left anyway. and if they are gonna add someone new, it should be someone that fits in. I hardly think hewitt will fit in. like at all.

I know! Can't they just bring back Agent Prentiss?? I always thought she was a great character, and the show's not the same without her. Prentiss was by far my favorite addition to the team, in all 9 seasons they've been on.

I am not a regular watcher of Criminal Minds, but I have seen quite a few episodes over the show's long run. I think Jennifer Love Hewitt will do very well on the show. She is a talented actress and will fit in well with the shows equally talented cast.

I for one am all for it. Criminal minds--except for a few great episodes--has been steadily decling over the past few years and Jeane Tripplehorn wasn't a geat replacement for Paget Brewster, so why not Jennifer Love Hewitt. She's not bad and most decent actors rise to the level of the writing. You all love Dean Norris on Breaking Bad, but on Under the Dumb, not so much. I say give her a chance and if the writing's there she won't disappoint. If it's not, she will.

I can't belive how negative people are here! At least give her a fair chance. The size of her breasts are totally unimportaint. She might be really good and this show needs a change. I have loved CM since the beginning but it is not as good as it used to be. I think this past season was better than 7&8. But for me, JJ is becoming too much. She was so good as the communication liason. As a profiler I don't like her. JLH character is supposed to have been undercover. That would give her a unike perspective when it comes to understanding behaviour. I will give her a fair chance for sure.

Thank you! I'm skeptical about Jennifer Love Hewitt, personally; but she won't deter me from watching it. (The skepticism is mostly because she's not Paget Brewster...I still hold out hope that she'll come back as a series regular!) At this point, anyone's better than Blake for me...anyone to take the spotlight off of JJ...anyone at all!
I am utterly tired of her character, now that she's a profiler. There are other just-as-intelligent people on her team: give them a chance to get a word in, for Pete's sake!

Honestly, she's not that bad. She's not Oscar-worthy but she's alright.

The only potential is... off the top of my head I don't recall seeing her in a role SIMILAR to this one. Serious investigator / crime drama with a very clever character.
1
Reply
Flag
But that doen't mean she can't pull it off. I remember how strage it was to see Thomas Gibson after watching Dharma &Greg. And that worked out just fine. I just hate the negativity before we have seen her work in CM.
2

Flag
Exactly... hence I said "potential" (meant to say potential roadblock)

She's not a bad actress and is more than a set of mammaries.

But I just don't recall seeing her in a similar role. That doesn't mean she can't do it it just adds to the uncertainty that she can.

Poor Jennifer Love Hewitt, it seemed like her career was going up and up and up, now it's... this. That's what happens when you star on a show about tugjobs, I guess.

I cannot picture her on this show, her personality seems so wrong for it, but then, so do half the regulars.

The Danish original was far superior to this American trash, entitled 'Forbrydelsen'. Watch that if you wish to see it done properly. Was on for 3 epic seasons.

Personally I haven't watched the Danish one and have no intentions to, I respect that many people like/prefer it but I don't watch shows with subtitles as I feel you lose all the nuances of the acting performances, tried to get into Maria Wern as we moved to Gotland and it's shot/based there but it just loses too much, will stick to the USA The Killing, personally I think it's excellent :)

I have watched the Danish show and I did enjoy it although the second season was weaker in my opinion than the first one (which in turn was better than the first two seasons of The Killing). But I still enjoyed The Killing too for the most part and the significant variations it made from the original show. To me they're two significantly different shows and I can enjoy both without being bothered by notions of doing this or that better. But that is just my view obviously.

I think unlikely mainly because they've promised the way Season 4 ends, there won't be be the possibility of continuation. Not sure if that is just to reassure viewers or if it means characters dying or going on the run or what but that's what showrunner Veena Sud has said...
Also Kinnaman & Enos probably want to do other stuff and they are both in demand

O'boy! more girl detectives... I began to think about this and wonder why it seems all cop shows have so many girl detectives? It is becoming such a cliché.

Ah, there you are. I was afraid you missed it.
You were complaining that the Pirate girl's titties were too small to fight Marines. Jennifer has a great rack, so I expect you are less miffed at her?

There are more men on the team than women though, and why shouldn't women be detectives?

The feminists are killing off the good shows which had strong male casts by insisting more females get added. So the female is given the part written for the male actor without any change or logic it is a girl in a man’s role. This is just taking good parts for men and giving them to woman for some liberal social experiment and quota.

Criminal minds has always had the same number of women on the team, which once again is less than the number of males, so I don't think women are being given roles written for men. If anything, the team of writers have specifically written the role for women - thank goodness! I would hate to turn on the television and not see any strong character roles played by females. Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one!

Not really. Season one team included Hotch, Gideon, Morgan, Reid and Elle. JJ and Garcia were not part of the profilers team. They performed very important tasks, but they were not included in the Team, since their job extended to other teams. In The fisher king 1 the team is granted a bunch of holidays. Both JJ and Garcia were left behind, working, because they were not part of the team. Now they are all included in that ridiculous notion that you become 'a family' after working with the same bunch of people for a while.
Flag
I agree with you Lotti.
In fact, if you take the time to watch a behind-the-scenes featurette on the "Making of CM" (featured on the S2 DVD's, but I'm sure you can find it elsewhere online.) they actually say that historically, for every ten or so people admitted to an FBI profiling team in real life, only two of those are females.

So the show's portrayal of female profilers/investigators is not all that inaccurate!
2
Flag
I'm not sure if this is a good choice, but I'm willing to give her a chance. She might prove to be a better fit than Blake (who wasn't a bad character, but for me really didn't manage to fill the gap left by Prentiss and had a pretty redundant skill set - they already had Reid for linguistics). There's no one on the team with extensive undercover experience and the mind set that goes with it, so this seems like a pretty good idea.

Yeah, I have my doubts too but I'll give her a chance. If she brings an overabundance of emotion or drama, which is what she's known for, though, I'm gonna hate her. It's the wrong show for it. As for the predictability that they brought in a brunette female to fit the position...well, that's the people doing the castings fault. I can't really blame her for fitting their ideal appearance.
Reply
Flag
Some of the comments in here about her breast size are abhorrent, why is it ok to say that someone should or shouldn't get a role because of their breast size? Blatant sexism. We wouldn't say "oh she shouldn't get the role because she's black" or "he shouldn't get the role because he's gay" so why is it ok to throw such sexist comments about in the 21st century?

Because some people are jealous, some people are obsessed, and some people are childish? I think the intent is to cover up those with the idea that it's not believable to have someone with a large bust in this role, but this show is not "realistic", and besides, Paget Brewster was fairly busty too, nobody said anything about that.

Well I did JT. I said I wanted her back because she was great on this declining show. And you're partially right about the rest of the cast. Too much, "Actually we're really normal people and catching monsters is just another day at the office." Nobody buys that crap and it pisses me off when they suggest it. To catch monsters you have to be able to think like one, and that seems very depressing.
Reply

Paget Brewster is great, she shouldn't continue burning her career on this series, she needs a breakout role now before it's too late. Her return to the series felt like career-defeat, another return would be sad - yeah, her character was really good, but the show itself isn't that good.

I stopped watching a few years ago, but by then it had already become "we're just a normal dysfunctional mixed family who catches serial killers every day" whereas they were at least diverse characters with differences earlier on, even though not a one of them ever felt authentic to the premise.

I only still watch it because Maggie still likes it and loves Penelope. I think she's a bit too over-the-top, but I do like her in spite of that. One of this past season's best episodes was badass Penelope kicking ass and taking names. I also hated it when Reid's soulmate the incredible Parker was killed. It just seemed so ridiculously depressing and stupid.

It is about time for Criminal Minds to wrap up. I love the actors, but the show is getting stale. It used to be a must watch, but it has moved into my slot of when nothing else is on. Saved to watch later. Season 9 is still sitting in my playlist. I will give it a try, but JLH might not even be enough to move it back into my must see list.

I agree that the show has become stale and so repetitive. I especially dislike when they get around to giving the profile. It would take a couple of hours to carefully choreograph all that. But, I think Hewitt will be the death of the show.

Stale? No way! IMO it's one of the few procedurals that's still fresh after a long run, CSIs all got very stale and we stopped watching, Bones has been very poor for a couple of seasons, even Castle is getting a bit dull. Criminal Minds always impresses the wife and I with its writing and acting.
2

It is extremely stale and much less believable than it used to be. The writing has definately declined and the acting seems forced thse days. It's become mediocrity at its finest.
2
Reply
Flag
Extremely mediocre with one or two exceptions (episodes) every season. I'd say it started since Prentiss left; the plots weren't great and the 'replacement' agents weren't either. It didn't work with cadet Seaver (Rachel Nichols) or with Blake (Jeanne Tripplehorn). So I don't think it'll work with JLH but let's hope I'm wrong.
2
Reply
Flag
It started when Prentiss left, yes, but not because she went away (or the ridiculous way she went away) but due to the change of executive producer and several writers, which ended up in that executive producer being promoted as show runner. Once she got that position, she brought serval friends of her as the new writers, and the only one who remained from the earlier four seasons was one guy (Dunkle) who had worked with her in alias. Right after that the show declined, and started including spy plots, lots of action sequences without a single intelligent dialogue, and tons of gore and unsub. In the process, they killed the suspense. Nowadays we know who the unsub is from the cast list, even days before the show is broadcasted.
