Wednesday 9:00 PM on CBS
As a Joe Mantenga fan, I am thrilled at this news. Given the dynamic figure that Mandy Patinkin was on this show, you'd need someone with equal gravitas to take the helm, and I don't think Mantenga will disappoint. Hopefully, given some of his background, he'll be able to bring some wry humor to the show. His film and TV work (I recommend House of Games as a strong film and a good intro to Mr. Mantenga) is always compelling, and he is brilliant as Fat Tony on The Simpsons!
As with Harvey Keitel, I think Joe Mantenga can bring a more physical/man of action character to Criminal Minds. I can't wait to see his first episode!

Indeed, Special Agent David Rossi.

I cannot wait! Well, I suppose I'll have to, but you get my meaning. With even just the small smattering of information we have right now, Joe/David will be a wonderful addition to the cast/BAU. Having a character come to the unit voluntarily may erase some of those things that were most annoying about the character of Gideon. From ep 1, it seemed as if Gideon, deep down, didn't want to be there. He kept himself separate, as Hotch tried to explain in the Season 2 finale, reaching out only momentarily to touch the lives of the other profilers. Hmm, there's that art-life thing again. I know that another "experienced profiler" is not going to come without his own baggage, I just hope it's more understandable and doesn't become the entire focus of the show.
I wonder what the actual turnover rate among BAU Agents is - and if we should expect our favorite team to be as open and welcoming to David Rossi as they (mostly) were with Emily Prentiss. Backstory relationships with Hotch, Morgan, heck, even Garcia are possible, too. It seems, based on what little we know about the first ep he will be appearing in, that they will throw David Rossi right in the deep end. I like that!

You are a fount of information, as usual! That being the case, I'd imagine a newbie dropped among a close-knit team would have his work cut out for him before the well-oiled machine can gear up. I'm sure that's one reason they made David Rossi someone who is returning to the team after an absence - there can be some old relationships.
Just a follow-up to my earlier post (and at the risk of having kopeckee take credit for my recommendation again!) ...
For those who want to see Joe Mantenga in action, the Criterion special edition DVD of Mamet's House of Games comes out tomorrow. He really is such a dynamic actor...I think this may be a case of a cast change helping the series tremendously. Plus, it's a pretty good movie!
Here's a review of the DVD...

Gideon should be easy to get rid of. All they have to do is say that he just didn't show up for work one day, and he still hasn't given them an explanation as to why. ![]()
I think that JM's character will be more interesting. I thought that MP's character was kind of dry and boring.
