Please join us in a new thread to discuss Joe Mantegna. What does everyone think will be the direction of the show with Joe as the new agent on Criminal Minds?

Well I think given his age he has to an experienced profiler, I can't see them bringing in someone who was inexperienced anyway. Other than that I don't know because I've never seen him in anything before. I would hope that there will be no tension in the team over the introduction of his character, they did with Prentiss already and I think losing Gideon will be hard for the team they don't need the added stress of a complicated new team member. I hope he isn't as gruff and abrupt as Gideon could be (although he did have his tender moments) otherwise he could end up just being a clone of Gideon and I wouldn't want that.

As a Joe Mantenga fan, I am thrilled at this news. Given the dynamic figure that Mandy Patinkin was on this show, you'd need someone with equal gravitas to take the helm, and I don't think Mantenga will disappoint. Hopefully, given some of his background, he'll be able to bring some wry humor to the show. His film and TV work (I recommend House of Games as a strong film and a good intro to Mr. Mantenga) is always compelling, and he is brilliant as Fat Tony on The Simpsons!

As with Harvey Keitel, I think Joe Mantenga can bring a more physical/man of action character to Criminal Minds. I can't wait to see his first episode!

I'm also hoping he'll be a little bit less rigid then gideon. Hotch has his business like exterior that sometimes gives way to tender moments and that works really well for his character. But I think it would be nice balance to have the new character be a little softer than gideon was. By the way, does anyone know if our new character has been given a name yet?

I'm glad that there will be a little time between gideon leaving and them bringing in a new character. It'll give the current cast some time to adjust their relationships with the loss of gideon. I think they must be on episode 3 or 4 by now and with Joe Mantenga just being cast now, I imagine we won't see the appearance of the new character until at least episode 5.

I think he will fit right in and is a good choice ...Mandy Patinkin/ Gideon never stays with shows for a long time from what i have read.... He doesnt like to be away from new york and likes the stage /singing etc ... I will miss him but i am glad its Joe and not Harvey... i guess we will see ... House of Games.. i tell everyone to rent that movie (David Mamet)....

The character does have a name, and odds are very good that he also will be Italian

    Indeed, Special Agent David Rossi.

Thanks for posting the link Most interesting to us is this paragraph from the article:

Mantegna will play FBI Special Agent David Rossi. He'll make his debut in the series fifth episode. The back story on Mantegna's character: he was an original member of the Behavioral Analysis Unit "who took early retirement to go on lecture and book tours," according to the network press release. He's volunteered to return to the presumably desperately short-staffed unit.

I cannot wait! Well, I suppose I'll have to, but you get my meaning. With even just the small smattering of information we have right now, Joe/David will be a wonderful addition to the cast/BAU. Having a character come to the unit voluntarily may erase some of those things that were most annoying about the character of Gideon. From ep 1, it seemed as if Gideon, deep down, didn't want to be there. He kept himself separate, as Hotch tried to explain in the Season 2 finale, reaching out only momentarily to touch the lives of the other profilers. Hmm, there's that art-life thing again. I know that another "experienced profiler" is not going to come without his own baggage, I just hope it's more understandable and doesn't become the entire focus of the show.

I wonder what the actual turnover rate among BAU Agents is - and if we should expect our favorite team to be as open and welcoming to David Rossi as they (mostly) were with Emily Prentiss. Backstory relationships with Hotch, Morgan, heck, even Garcia are possible, too. It seems, based on what little we know about the first ep he will be appearing in, that they will throw David Rossi right in the deep end. I like that!

I am very excited and thrilled at the news. He is an exceptionally talented actor who will be able to join the cast and truly become one of them. He is very gifted at 'turning into' his character. I loved him on the series "Joan of Arcadia"; he had some tough moments on that show. I think CBS chose well and I agree that they needed to bring in an experienced profiler to replace someone as charasmatic and dynamic as Gideon. I can't wait to see him.

I checked on this for you. It's not high; however, agents Gideon's age leave when they retire or take an assignment in a town close to home after serving where the Bureau had placed them for 20+ years. A few others want to move up the management ladder. Most stay until they are dragged out kicking and screaming.

You are a fount of information, as usual! That being the case, I'd imagine a newbie dropped among a close-knit team would have his work cut out for him before the well-oiled machine can gear up. I'm sure that's one reason they made David Rossi someone who is returning to the team after an absence - there can be some old relationships.

    Here's a question:
Do you think Mantegna will appear 1st in the opening credits or last? Will they use the same team photo at the end and photoshop him in where Mandy use to be?

Personally, I'm hoping they get a completely new opening credits sequence. I've never been much of a fan of it. It's really basic, and I think the way it's done and the theme attached to it could be done a lot better. Compared to the intro to a lot of other shows it's pretty primitive and I'm hoping they'll make it a little more exciting.

I'm not sure how I feel about this new addition to the cast. As much as I loved Paget when she was added to the cast I'm not sure how I'll feel about Joe Mantegna. Gideon's storyline was so unique I'm intrigued as to how he's going to fill the massive gap left by MP.

Just a follow-up to my earlier post (and at the risk of having kopeckee take credit for my recommendation again!) ...

For those who want to see Joe Mantenga in action, the Criterion special edition DVD of Mamet's House of Games comes out tomorrow. He really is such a dynamic actor...I think this may be a case of a cast change helping the series tremendously. Plus, it's a pretty good movie!

Here's a review of the DVD...

Ed gave out some more interesting information on JM/ Rossi in his interview:

"Mantegna's character will be introduced five episodes into the new season. His character will be "based on an amalgam of the original profilers," Bernero says -- a guy who retired from profiling about a decade ago and is now very well off, lecturing and traveling the world. He volunteers to come back to work, in Gideon's absence, leading people to ask why. He has a secret -- something left undone, Bernero says, which will be cleared up in the course of the season.
In some respects, he'll be a fish out of water; when he last worked for the BAU, there were no women, and they investigated cases by themselves, not as teams. "He's come back and he'll have to learn to play by the new rules . . . and it's a struggle for him," Bernero says."

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/19/AR2007081901416_3.html

(This is the smae interview that BAUCTU posted in Season 3 discussion)

So, this means that Rossi probably doesn't know anyone on the team if Hotch only started in 1999. I'm assuming that Morgan didn't start before Hotch.
I'm excited to see how he interacts with the team, especially Prentiss and JJ. I just hope he's nothing like Max Ryan, especially with 'something left undone', which is like Ryan.

Hmm...I suppose I'll try to keep an open mind on this one instead of deciding that I don't like them before they even showed up (like Prentiss, who I think is awesome now ) so yeah...should be interesting...wonder how they're going to get rid of Gideon though...

Gideon should be easy to get rid of. All they have to do is say that he just didn't show up for work one day, and he still hasn't given them an explanation as to why.

I think that JM's character will be more interesting. I thought that MP's character was kind of dry and boring.

Well i'm excited and very nervous about Joe Mantenga joining the cast!!! Excited b/c I adore him and think he is a great actor. Very nervous b/c the show not being on for that long and M.P. being the second person to leave the cast is a bit upsetting!! Plus I also adore M.P. I just hope the writters continue to do a good job and if they do J.M. will hopefully be well recieved!!!
