Hmm, painful was more like it with this episode for me. I didn't really understand how the unsub's painlessness had a lot to do with the reason he was doing what he did. I thought the case was weak. For once they don't show us the unsub right off but the red herrings they put in the way weren't very good. Although I guess he finally made himself worthy of a bullet.
I'm all for practical jokes at work but I think Morgan went way too far with giving Reid's phone number and identifying himself as Reid to the press. That goes beyond a joke. Whatever happened to how angry Hotch was at Jordan Todd when she misrepresented herself in 52 Pickup? You'd think Hotch would have a word with Morgan about that. I thought the response they gave from Reid was rather weak as well. And since when did he go to MIT. I always thought it was Cal Tech. These neverendinglapses in continuity are so annoying. I think with doctorates in chemistry and engineering, Reid could have come up with something much more elaborate to get back at Morgan, something that would display his genius. This seemed more like something a ditzy teenager would do.
I liked the scene with Jack but I'd hoped his bullying would tie in more to the story. It was all kind of a let down. Although I always say I don't like seeing the unsub from the very beginning, last week was far superior to this in my mind.
Personally, I couldn't have been more satisfied. Profiling and the case right at the center, and the mystery as to who the unsub is- this is how it should be. CM's back on track -heck, CM is back!- and I'm giddy with relief. I'm going straight to reviewing.
Really liked this. Nail biting again at the end with Hotch in the boiler room, and the scenes with Jack caught me a bit, a really lovely scene. And another interesting diagnosis in there. I'm relieved that again, they followed the same theme with the lack of gore, and the fact that the unsub wasn't obvious straight away... I'm in agreement, this feels more like vintage CM. I'm a happy girl!
I must admit though, I too thought that the pranks pulled by Morgan and Reid were a little off. Funny, I was just watching 52 Pickup last night lol... so, I agree with Reidfanatic. But- that said, everything else was just really good.
Not "Dorado Falls" that's for sure. Ok at best, but held my interest. Too many weak scenes and weak characters. Certainly wasn't on the edge of my seat. Ironically JJ is starting to look like Seaver the way Seaver was cloned after JJ. Look at JJ's pose after the intro music with the cast lineup photo. JJ looks like she was photo shopped in Seavers position. "Dorado Falls" still the big winner for me this Season. That's what intensity is all about.
The pranking was just for fun. It was reminscent of how they used to engage early on. Morgan, Reid, and Elle used to always sort of play little jokes on each other and tease each other back in the day and Reid is apparently known for his playing pranks and things of that nature. I loved that part of the episode. It had me thoroughly amused. I've always enjoyed the brotherly relationship that Derek and Spencer have, it's probably one of my favorite relationships. I think the pranks were natural. They've always done little things around the office, and I think given the circumstances of their team dealing with so much emotional turmoil, Hotch is willing to overlook the little things like that for the sake of them being happy and getting along. Also, I think the only reason Hotch was so hard on Jordan Todd was simply because she was not JJ. I mean let's not pretend that any of us are oblivious to the fact that JJ is clearly Hotch's favorite out of the gang. Strangely enough when Jordan misrepresented herself it wasn't the first time that any of them had did something that could be similarly, he only really took issue with it because it was her. Anyways that was my favorite part of the episode because I'm a huge fan of both Morgan and Reid.
I thought the case was pretty good. They kept it close to Colombine but didn't make it too close to be difficult to watch. I did get a little lost admist all the profiling and things and all of the potential suspects. It was good though.
Two little nuances. It's a bit annoying that JJ went from calling Reid "Spence" occasionally, to now doing it practically all of the time. It takes some of the cuteness out of it, for lack of a better word.
Also, it seems like they are literally trying to give Emily more things to do (which speaks to how they never really used her before she disappeared). Morgan used to be the one who did most of the cognitive interviews, occasionally he'd get an assist from Reid (like in Penelope) it was part of his specialty, and once I seen Emily do it before, but now it's like that's all she does. I kinda prefer it better when Morgan does it.

| It seems to me that the team misrepresents the truth to the media pretty often. They've often used the press conferences to put misinformation out about a killer so that he/she reacts in a certain way. When Hotch lectured Jodan, she had misrepresented herself to a witness, not to the press. She'd said she had the same thing happen to her sister when she never had a sister just to get the woman to give up info. Not the same at all. In the real world, Morgan wouldn't be able to speak to Garcia the way he does, or wear what he does, nor could he kick in doors the way he does or tackle vans, trains, and automobiles. This was played for comic relief, in my opinion and was very funny. |
JJ's entire job revolved around misrepresenting things to the media and manipulating news coverage. And unfortunately misleading victims, witnesses, and perpetrators is a realistic aspect of the job. Yeah, you may want to stay as close to the truth as possible, but it isn't out of the realms of reality and not inherently grounds for any sort of discipline if one chooses to mislead someone during the case for the greater good. Ther have been moments in the show's history where someone on the team has walked that line with more than just the press. I still maintain that Hotch's biggest issue was the fact that he didn't like that JJ wasn't there to do her job. He's fond of JJ and seems to respect how she does things and her as a person. He got just as snippy with Garcia when she temporarily filled in for JJ.
In the real world Reid would have never qualified as an agent. He'd have only been a FBI consultant. In the real world Morgan's attire would probably be questioned depending on whether or not he was more toward undercover work. He started off the series wearing suits just like Hotch and Rossi. In the real world, Garcia's attire and entire persona would probably be out of the question. she and Morgan would constantly be being written up for unprofessionalism and sexual harrassment based on their flirting and phonecalls. In the real world Emily NEVER would have gotten reinstated and probably would be in Witness Protection somewhere. Rossi would have been written up more times than one can imagine and be forced to attend those sensitivity seminars. Hotch probably wouldn't still be the boss. JJ wouldn't have been only assigned to one team and therefore wouldn't have been with them every step of the way...she was a liasion...realistically she'd be actually spread around their and various other units. their entire team probably would have been disbanded a long time ago, pending investigations for a few things, the fact that they just recently faced a review board is kinda shocking if you think about it. No fresh or new blood, no switching up and transferring people into just recently? Not plausible. Garcia only working with them? Implausible as well. The list could realistically go on....
