Criminal Minds

Season 1 Episode 21

Secrets and Lies

Aired Wednesday 10:00 PM May 03, 2006 on CBS

  • Trivia

    • Garcia attempts to hack the CIA database to find Prince William's telephone number. The screen displays:
      searchall localhost
      enter search citeria: Prince Williams/tel
      Country code 44
      United Kingdom
      City Code  020-
      Tel 9137

    • At the end of the episode as the team are leaving, the "joystick lady" can be seen in the background giving Dr. Reid what looks like her card.

    • It was revealed in this episode that Morgan has a dog named Clooney.

    • Apparently Summers' death occurred immediately after the team returned from Sarasota. The big board in the conference room still had the preliminary evidence from the Mark Gregory case, which was seen in the previous episode, "Charm and Harm."

    • Garcia was not able to travel with the rest of the team to the CIA headquarters because she was on a CIA "watch list" for unspecified reasons.

    • When Bruno Hawks asks Gideon if they managed to catch their unsub (Mark Gregory, whose photograph and preliminary evidence was on the BAU conference room board Hawks was staring at), Gideon replies they had, "only after he drowned eight women."

In the episode involving Gregory's case, "Charm and Harm", Gregory drowned seven women – the initial four in Florida, plus the ones in Georgia and South Carolina. The team also discovered that he drowned his mother as a child. The attacks in Tennessee were only attempted drownings, as both women were saved by intervention (the motel manager in the first case, and Morgan's shooting Gregory in the second).

  • Quotes

    • Gideon: Then we have to assume the mole has an exit strategy.
Hotchner: Only now we're blocking the exit, and the only way out is through us.

    • Gina Sanchez: Let's get one thing clear. We all write a letter just like the one Summers wrote.
Morgan: A suicide note? That doesn't mess with your mind just a little bit?
Gina Sanchez: I am neither disillusioned nor confused about what I am, what I do, or what I have done.
Morgan: Somebody here is. Why else would they rat out their own people?
Gina Sanchez: You'll have to ask them.

    • Gideon: The intelligence community's mantra is increase the parameters of your enemy's paranoia. Whatever you see or are told, please, trust no one but me.

    • Gideon: One thing I've learned over the years profiling CIA agents... spies are some of the smartest liars in the world. Be smarter.

    • Bruno Hawks: Is this the part where you profile me?
Gideon: I've done that for over 20 years. And for free.
Bruno Hawks: What'd you come up with?
Gideon: Well, you don't smile as much as you used to. But the Rogaine's working.

    • Gideon: Over the years, I've conducted psychological evaluations on every field agent in that unit.
Garcia: You worked for the CIA?
      Gideon: Not officially.

    • JJ: What do you suppose this is all about?
Reid: Call me cynical, but considering it's 2 a.m., I doubt it's good news.
      JJ: You are a genius.

    • Gideon: You want my help?
      Bruno Hawks: Yeah.
      Gideon: I need my team.

    • Elle: (to Gideon) You said you'd send a postcard of a beach... you lie.
Reid: Yeah. You hate the beach.

    • Garcia: You do know what this means?
      JJ: What.
Garcia: We'll be able to find out whether Princess Diana's death was really an accident!
JJ: I think that's exactly the kind of thing that got you on their list.

    • Reid: (after learning the CIA staged the victim's suicide) How'd you like to have that job.

    • Gideon: Only beach you'll see is on a postcard I send you from my vacation.

    • Gideon: George Orwell said, "In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act."

    • Gideon: Albert Einstein said, "Whoever undertakes to set himself up as judge in the field of truth and knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods."

  • Notes

  • Allusions

    • Garcia: Sleep well, sweet prince.

This was a possible reference to Shakespeare's Hamlet, but it was a misquote. The actual line is, "Good night, Sweet Prince."

    • Secrets and Lies is the title of a 1996 movie about a conflicted family, written and directed by Mike Leigh.
